EFFORTS to develop “quantum natives” amongst Filipino students are gaining floor, beginning with early publicity in colleges to rising applied sciences corresponding to quantum computing.
This initiative took a step ahead with the presentation of the nation’s first desktop quantum laptop, the SpinQ Gemini 2-qubit Desktop Quantum Computer, at Cebu City National Science High School on March 25, 2026.
The occasion introduced collectively stakeholders from authorities, academe, and trade, together with Quantum Computing Society of the Philippines president Bobby Corpus Jr., Department of Science and Technology (DOST) 7 Provincial Director Bryan B. Ybañez, Taga-SciHi Alumni president Jun Sa-a, Cebu Institute of Technology-University College of Computer Studies Dean Dr. Cherry Sta. Romana, and quantum algorithm designer Brian Siegelwax.
Corpus mentioned the long-term objective is to construct a pipeline of “quantum natives,” starting on the college degree and step by step increasing to highschool and elementary students. However, he famous that whereas packages and timelines are being mapped out, a key problem stays in management and execution.
The initiative is supported by collaboration between DOST and the Quantum Computing Society of the Philippines, with plans to combine quantum computing ideas into the Department of Education curriculum to domesticate curiosity in superior applied sciences at an early stage.
During the morning session, Sta. Romana emphasised the significance of sturdy foundational studying, encouraging students to maximise instruments corresponding to synthetic intelligence to assist their research. Siegelwax adopted with an accessible introduction to quantum computing rules, functions, and profession alternatives.
In the afternoon, 21 students participated in a workshop and challenge pitching session led by Julius Evangelio, who launched “Qubies” and mentioned sensible functions of quantum ideas.
Students had been tasked to develop proposals utilizing quantum computing to handle typhoon-related challenges within the Philippines. Their outputs had been evaluated by a panel of judges, together with Corpus and Evangelio.
Group E emerged because the winner with its challenge, “QuantumCharge: Quantum-Powered Batteries for Typhoon Resiliency Towards a Sustainable Philippines,” incomes a P3,000 prize.
Group C secured second place with “Quantum Solutions: Relief Distributions,” taking residence P2,000. Group A positioned third with “Quantum-Optimized Emergency Navigation and Real-Time Population Tracking for Typhoon Cryptography,” receiving P1,000.
Meanwhile, Group D completed fourth with “Safety with Quantum-Based Disaster Risk Reduction and Response.”
Freshman scholar Sophia Laurice Mercado mentioned the expertise opened new alternatives for innovation.
“At first, I felt nervous because it was my first time participating in an event like this, and it felt like I was walking through a new light. But over time, I felt excited and relieved as we were encouraged to create projects that could strengthen our worldly settings,” she mentioned.
Organizers mentioned this system highlights rising efforts to equip Filipino students with future-ready abilities and place the nation to take part within the world improvement of quantum applied sciences. / Anna Goc-ong, Lia Ballesteros and Gabriel Rusiana of Cebu City National Science High School
