Britain and France bombed suspected Islamic State arms dump in Syria, London says

Britain’s and France’s air forces performed a joint operation on Saturday night to bomb a suspected underground arms cache beforehand utilized by the Islamic State group in Syria, Britain’s defence ministry mentioned.

Western plane have been conducting patrols to cease a resurgence of the Islamist militant group that dominated components of Syria till 2019. Intelligence evaluation recognized an underground facility believed for use to retailer weapons and explosives in mountains north of Palmyra, Britain mentioned.

“Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels down to the facility; whilst detailed assessment is now underway, initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully,” Britain’s defence ministry mentioned in an announcement.

Britain mentioned the world was “devoid of any civilian habitation” earlier than the assault and that each one its plane had returned safely.

“This action shows our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East,” British Defence Secretary John Healey mentioned, referring to Islamic State by an alternate title.

Britain mentioned it used Typhoon FGR4 fight jets to bomb the goal, supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
