Hundreds of college athletes are in Eugene this week – and it is not for an athletic competitors.

The Black Student Athlete Summit is an opportunity for these college students to discover life after college sports has come to an finish.

The summit is internet hosting 900 pupil athletes and 350 representatives from enterprise, business, and the world of sports to debate the truth that lots of them will not go professional – and that many former college athletes have careers as numerous as legal professionals, engineers, even content material creators.

But it is not simply altering minds on what’s subsequent in life – it is difficult the stereotype going through Black athletes whatever the sport.

“If I did not play ball I’d be in jail or jail. That’s loopy,” stated the summit’s founder and government director, Leonard Moore. “But I think there’s added pressure on Black athletes to go pro, you know, in the NBA, the NFL, stuff like that.

“You know, we have people come from industry, who come from business, who come from the world of sports – but I think they all have one message, and the message is, we have to think about life when you’re no longer an athlete. And that is the biggest thrust of what we’re about.”

Moore, who is a history professor at the University of Texas, says he has taught many college athletes.

He says not only were the Black athletes under a tremendous amount of pressure, but many of them also had no idea what they would do after college sports was over.

For some of the athletes attending the summit, it’s more than just thinking about the future – it’s about their reality now.

“I also am the only Black girl on my team,” stated Jermonie Billingsly, a water polo participant at Long Beach State University. “So generally it is arduous being a Black athlete and being in predominantly white areas. So having occasions like this, it is so good to really feel like a part of a neighborhood and see different people who symbolize you and seem like you and doing the identical issues and having the identical objectives as you.”
