Biotech industry driving both human and animal nutrition: experts

Biotechnology graduates are the architects of the following animal science revolution within the nation, experts stated at a webinar on “Biotech Careers: Food and Nutrition” on Sunday (March 22, 2026).

The webinar was collectively organised by the Vellore Institute of Technology, Chennai, and The Hindu as a part of the sequence titled “Biotechnology: Role in Industry 5.0 — Sustainable Future Pathways”.

“While the growth rate of the food processing market is estimated at 13%, India’s bio-economy rate is projected to be much higher. This means biotechnology students will have enough career opportunities to steer the growth over the next decade,” Anand Okay. Jadi, normal supervisor and plant head, ICML Medak, ITC Ltd., stated.

G. Jayaraman, Professor and Dean of the School of Biosciences and Technology on the VIT, Chennai, spoke about biotechnology’s rising affect in numerous sectors, together with agriculture, meals, healthcare, and research-driven innovation. He stated the biotech industry was driving both human and animal vitamin. “It is enhancing the quality and quantity of food by improving the sustainability of production systems,” he stated.

Chakkaravarthi Saravanan, Associate Professor on the National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management in Kundli, Haryana, identified that with an ever-increasing inhabitants, shrinking land area, and rising meals costs, the importance of biotechnology for meals was rising.

Speaking on the function of biotechnology within the livestock industry, R. Balaguru, technical director at V.Okay. Palappa Nadar Poultry Farms Pvt. Ltd., stated 70% of the agricultural poor on the earth relied on livestock.

The panellists advocated for establishing a strong basis for studying and understanding new-age applied sciences, together with AI, machine studying, and information analytics that will assist steer the defining moments in R&D.
