Auburn pulled off a major upset against top-ranked Georgia on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Bulldogs 27-24 in a thrilling match.

The win marked a significant turning point for Auburn, which had not beaten a ranked opponent since 2021 and hadn't defeated a team ranked number one since 2017. Meanwhile, Georgia's performance was marred by mistakes that ultimately cost them the game.

Georgia struggled on both sides of the ball, allowing a blocked field goal and committing three personal fouls against Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown in the final seconds of play. One of those penalties put the Tigers in position for Alex McPherson's game-winning field goal as time expired.

The Bulldogs' woes continued with critical mistakes that directly contributed to the Tigers' victory. They allowed a blocked field goal, turned it over three times and committed several key penalties throughout the game.

Auburn took advantage of Georgia's errors to take control of the game, scoring 24 unanswered points after falling behind 14-0 early on to lead 24-14 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Tigers' victory marked a significant turning point in their rivalry with Georgia, snapping a nine-game losing streak dating back to 2017 and marking Smart's second loss against Auburn in 12 tries.

Georgia had been virtually unbeatable when ranked No. 1 under Smart's leadership, boasting an impressive record of 41-4, including an unblemished 18-0 mark at home.

Auburn coach Alex Golesh was visibly emotional after the game, crediting his team and staff for their hard work and dedication. He expressed gratitude to his players, coaches, and fans, who had endured a tough period for the program.

Golesh received words of encouragement from Auburn legends Takeo Spikes and Jason Campbell before the game, with Spikes' son Bear also getting in on the action, earning a spot on the field after the win.

Auburn's defense played a crucial role in turning the game around, holding Georgia to just 113 yards rushing on 28 carries, including a meager 2.1 yards per carry from Nate Frazier.

The Tigers' defensive effort was particularly impressive considering they were facing an opponent known for its dominant rushing attack. Auburn's ability to shut down Georgia's running game allowed them to build a 10-point lead in the second half and ultimately secure the win.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart had high praise for Auburn's defensive coordinator DJ Durkin before the game, acknowledging his reputation as one of the top defensive coaches in the conference. Smart expressed respect for Durkin and his team, noting that they would need to be prepared to face a formidable opponent.

Auburn's ground-and-pound approach was instrumental in their victory, with Brown finishing with 115 yards on the ground and Jeremiah Cobb adding 61 yards on 13 carries. This strategy proved effective against an opponent typically known for its strength in the trenches.
