Astronomers believe an “otherworldly” light seen in the sky on Friday night time is linked to a Chinese rocket launch hours earlier.
Tūhura Otago Museum director and astronomer Ian Griffin stated the putting phenomenon appeared about half-hour after a rocket reportedly lifted off from China.
”As I perceive it, there was a launch at about half previous six our time,” Griffin stated.
”Roughly half an hour later, the rocket was passing over New Zealand when there was probably a stage separation or firing of rocket jets, and it turned extremely vibrant in the sky.”
Griffin stated the launch of a Long March-2D rocket carrying experimental satellites reportedly occurred from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center earlier that afternoon Beijing time.
Reports and pictures of a glowing cloud shifting throughout the sky shortly surfaced on social media, with sightings spanning a lot of the nation.
Griffin, who noticed the occasion from Middlemarch close to Dunedin, described it as ”a really vibrant cloud” that slowly expanded because it travelled.
He stated the cloud was initially intense and was probably reflecting daylight at excessive altitude.
Griffin stated that as the rocket climbed additional into orbit, the plume unfold out and shaped a particular spiral form, which he stated was a trademark of rocket exhaust dispersing in the higher ambiance.
