Australia’s Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) will current its food origin technology on the Australia Pavilion at World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, from 8–10 October 2025.
The authorities organisation, ANSTO, makes use of nuclear science and technology in tasks designed to develop and ship real-world advantages to Australia. One such instance is its food origin undertaking lead by Dr Debashish Mazumder, which is designed to focus on food fraud — a world food business situation costing an estimated AU$60–75 billion every year.
Using nuclear technology and machine studying, the ANSTO-developed method can confirm the geographic origin of food with a claimed accuracy of over 85%.
It works by analysing the distinctive ‘environmental fingerprint’ — a geochemical and isotope signature — that crops and animals take up from their surrounding surroundings. An environmental fingerprint database is then created utilizing genuine samples and machine studying methods are used to determine the true geographical origin of the merchandise.
Suitable for a variety of pure merchandise — together with seafood, meat, fruit, bushfood, greens, grains and even coral — the food origin technology could be deployed within the area by way of a transportable handheld XRF scanner.
During the expo, ANSTO will run six stay science exhibits and one panel dialogue. Speakers embody Dr Mazumder, ANSTO schooling officer Sarah Tyler and ANSTO schooling supervisor Dr Bridget Murphy, together with ANSTO’s unique animated character, Kai the Koi fish. Four science-themed challenges, impressed by Japanese recreation exhibits, shall be introduced together with interactive demonstrations, a duplicate of ANSTO’s moveable XRF scanner and entertaining movies explaining the science behind the innovation.
