I was struggling with weight gain despite a rigorous exercise routine that had previously kept me fit and healthy. For years, I had been working out six days a week, taking a combination of strength training and boot camp-style classes in addition to regular walking.

Despite my efforts, I started adding on weight - just over 10 pounds in about two years. I was confused as to why this was happening and felt frustrated by the lack of progress. Friends and family members suggested various solutions, including trying a GLP-1 medication.

They told me that it could help with weight loss, but my doctor said I didn't meet the requirements for prescription. My friends' suggestions were well-intentioned, but I decided to follow my doctor's advice rather than seeking out medication online. This meant trying other approaches to address my weight gain.

I started incorporating dance classes into my routine and was surprised by how much fun it was. The weight began to come off, and I felt more energetic and motivated. It seemed that a change in my exercise routine had been just what I needed to break through the plateau I had reached with my previous fitness activities.

As I continued on my fitness journey, I found myself stuck in a rut at the gym. The same old routine was starting to feel monotonous and uninspiring. I would go through the motions, picking up lighter weights and completing exercises with minimal effort.

The predictability of the gym sessions was taking its toll, and I started to feel like I was just going through the motions without any real sense of accomplishment or joy. The monotony of it all was starting to get to me, and I knew I needed a change.

I began to think about other activities that could bring more excitement and enthusiasm into my life. That's when I remembered how much I loved dancing as a child. I had been part of a dance program in high school, but had to leave due to personal circumstances.

The thought of returning to dance was initially daunting, but the more I thought about it, the more appealing it became. I started taking more dance classes, not just on Saturdays like before, but several times a week. This new approach allowed me to explore different styles and techniques, keeping my mind and body engaged.

With each passing class, I found myself feeling more alive and connected to my body. The sense of community that came with dancing was also a welcome change from the isolation I often felt at the gym. It seemed like a return to dance was exactly what I needed to reignite my passion for fitness.

Taking dance classes has had a profound impact on my physical health beyond just weight loss. In addition to regular exercise, I've noticed improvements in my overall flexibility and coordination.

I now attend four to five dance classes per week, combining modern and West African styles. This diversity keeps the workouts engaging and challenging, preventing them from feeling monotonous like some gym routines can be.

The dance community has been a significant factor in my progress. We motivate each other through our shared passion for movement, creating a supportive environment that encourages accountability and mutual empowerment.

Through dance, I've not only regained physical health but also rediscovered a sense of self-acceptance and happiness that I thought was lost forever.
