# Vancouver Island Offers Immersive Wellness Experiences

A trip to Vancouver Island is turning out to be more than just a vacation, it's an immersive wellness experience. My journey began at HAVN, a floating sauna experience situated on a refurbished naval barge in Victoria's harbor.

The unique setting offers a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for relaxation and rejuvenation. I've spent time soaking in the hot tub, watching planes take off and land nearby, creating a surreal contrast between calmness and activity.

As I explored HAVN, I realized that this is not an isolated instance of wellness on Vancouver Island. The island's natural beauty, from its rugged coastline to its dense rainforests, seems to have inspired an abundance of nature-infused wellness offerings.

From surfing on the west coast to exploring the fathomless forests, Vancouver Island offers a range of exhilarating experiences that cater to both body and mind. Yet, amidst this adventurous spirit, there's also a calmer current of energy that pervades the island, a slower pace of life that's often referred to as "Island time."

As I continued my journey on Vancouver Island, I found myself drawn to the tranquil atmosphere of Kingfisher Pacific Resort & Spa, situated on a scenic beach overlooking the ocean. This wellness haven has been a staple for two decades, thanks in part to its innovative subterranean hydrotherapy circuit, which features a series of hot tubs, grotto waterfalls, and rain shower pools.

The resort's latest addition is its Healing Caves, a 75-minute private experience that takes guests on an immersive journey through a sequence of multi-sensory chambers. The first chamber is a steam room infused with the sweet scent of plumeria and accompanied by the soothing sound of a cool waterfall. Each subsequent room offers a unique sensory experience, from the calming effects of pink salt to the invigorating rush of cryotherapy.

One of the standout features of Kingfisher Pacific's Healing Caves is its use of cutting-edge technology to create an otherworldly atmosphere. Guests can relax in a cryotherapy chamber where the walls dissolve into LED footage of arctic glaciers, or undergo full-body red-light therapy to stimulate circulation and relaxation. The final chamber is a storm pool where swimmers are surrounded by simulated wind, rain, rolling thunder, and lightning on a screen above.

This immersive spa experience is unlike anything else in the world, Kingfisher Pacific's Healing Caves are one of only three such spas globally, with the others located in Macau and Milan. As I floated through the chambers, feeling my worries wash away, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this unique opportunity to unwind and rejuvenate.

The weather outside may be unpredictable, but inside Kingfisher Pacific's Healing Caves, it's always a warm and sunny day, at least, that's what it feels like. As I emerged from the final chamber, feeling refreshed and revitalized, I knew that this was an experience I would never forget.

As I continued my journey through Vancouver Island, the landscape shifted dramatically as I drove west along the winding highway. The towering cedar trees of Cathedral Grove gave way to coastal pines battered by the salty sea air, and glimpses of the ocean began to appear between the trees.

The town of Tofino came into view, a remote outpost nestled in Clayoquot Sound. This region is home to the Nuu-chah-nulth people, who have lived among some of Vancouver Island's largest intact coastal rainforests for thousands of years. The area is characterized by rugged mountainous islands and glacier-carved fjords.

The history of the region is marked by significant battles to protect its natural resources. In the 1980s, the Nuu-chah-nulth successfully won an injunction against the provincial government to prevent the logging of ancient trees for use in toilet paper production. This was a major victory for the community, and it paved the way for further activism.

The '90s saw another significant protest, known as the War for the Woods, which drew thousands of people to the region in opposition to logging. The Nuu-chah-nulth have continued to advocate for the protection of their land and ocean, and they now run one of Canada's most respected Indigenous Guardian initiatives.

I was taken by skiff from a Tofino pier to a secluded cove where I stayed at Moon Jelly Bathhouse, a charming float home constructed by off-shore builder Mike Mavis. The bath house itself was moored beside the float home, and it offered stunning views of the surrounding area.

The bath house at Moon Jelly is inspired by traditional Irish seaweed bathing practices, where local kelp is used to infuse the bathwater with vitamins and minerals.

Three varieties of locally sourced kelp are added to both the freshwater and ocean salt tubs, creating a nourishing blend that's reminiscent of Japanese dashi broth. Guests can soak in these tubs or jump into the ocean for a refreshing cannonball.

In addition to the baths, guests at Moon Jelly have access to wifi, fire pits, showers, fleece robes, and tea, allowing them to fully disconnect from the outside world. The property is designed to promote seclusion and relaxation, with ample opportunities for paddleboarding and exploring the surrounding waters.

While soaking in the tubs or floating on a paddleboard, guests can take advantage of the natural surroundings by rubbing silk-slime blades of kelp into their skin and hair. The experience is both rejuvenating and humbling, evoking a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature.

The nearby coastline offers breathtaking views of wildlife such as orcas, bald eagles, sea lions, and sea otters, all of which can be spotted on a 90-minute boat journey northwest from Tofino with West Coast Aquatic Safaris. The scenic excursion also takes in the unique geology of the area, where hot waterfalls feed into natural hot tubs amidst old-growth forest.

The remote Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge is the final destination on this spa-hopping journey across Vancouver Island.

Accessible only by floatplane or boat, this secluded lodge offers an immersive experience where the boundaries between spa and safari blur.

Guests can enjoy a hot, spruce-scented shower that's open to the forest canopy in their own private canvas tent, complete with a stove-heated bed for warmth and comfort.

Early morning stretching and circulation-boosting glacial cold plunges are also on offer, providing the perfect way to start the day.

Excursions such as canyoning down rivers or hiking through ancient old-growth forests can be combined with helicopter rides back to basecamp, allowing guests to immerse themselves in nature while still enjoying high-adventure activities.

After a day spent battling the cold Pacific surf, guests at Ucluelet's Black Rock Oceanfront Resort can unwind in the cavelike steam room at Drift Spa, surrounded by the invigorating scent of eucalyptus.

The spa itself offers treatments that draw on the region's coastal bounty, using ocean mud, salt, and seaweed to scrub, purify, and hydrate skin. Guests seeking a more secluded experience can head to Tofino Resort & Marina, where a 30-minute boat ride leads to the hotel's Remote Floating Sauna.

This wood-fired sauna offers an unparalleled level of privacy, save for the occasional seal or wandering bear, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the tranquil surroundings while still taking in the sights and sounds of the nearby shores.
