The United States has a new presidential plane, the VC-25B Bridge, which made its maiden flight on July 1 as Air Force One. The aircraft was gifted to the US by Qatar and is valued at around $400 million.

Since taking office, President Donald Trump has shown interest in a new Air Force One, even displaying a model of the plane on his desk in the White House. This vision became a reality when the VC-25B Bridge flew as Air Force One for the first time on July 1.

The new plane is significantly different from its predecessor, the VC-25A fleet that has served presidents since the 1990s. It boasts state-of-the-art protective measures and features a distinctive red, white, and blue paint scheme favored by President Trump.

In addition to its upgraded security features, the VC-25B Bridge is also larger, faster, and more fuel-efficient than the outgoing plane. These improvements are expected to enhance the safety and comfort of presidential travel.

The new Air Force One has already been involved in some notable events, including a trip to North Dakota where President Trump dedicated the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library on July 1. The VC-25B Bridge made history by becoming the first aircraft with this designation to fly as Air Force One.

As the US begins to rely on the new plane for presidential travel, attention is turning to how it compares to its predecessor in terms of capabilities and features.

The outgoing presidential plane, a second VC-25A known as SAM 29000, served alongside its counterpart, SAM 28000, which entered service in 1990. The two planes have been flying together for nearly three decades, with the first one completing its final presidential flight in June 2026.

Measuring 231 feet and 10 inches long with a wingspan of 195 feet and 8 inches, the VC-25A is a significant aircraft that has been a symbol of American power. Its identical counterpart, SAM 29000, entered service in 1991 and has been flying alongside it ever since.

The new Air Force One, a customized Boeing 747-8i, was built in 2012 for use by the Qatari royal family as a luxury transport. The plane is now being accepted by President Trump to serve as his official aircraft, despite strict rules on US presidential gifts.

According to reports, Donald Trump plans to accept the luxury jet from the Qatari royal family and continue flying in it after his tenure. This unusual arrangement has raised eyebrows, with some calling the plane a "flying palace due to its opulent features.

The Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet is reportedly one of the most expensive gifts ever received by the American government. It was first spotted at Palm Beach International airport on February 15, 2025, after President Trump toured the aircraft.

The VC-25B Bridge, an interim presidential aircraft being used before Boeing's customized VC-25Bs are delivered in 2028, is larger than the outgoing Air Force One with a wingspan of 224 feet and 5 inches.

The new Air Force One, currently being used as an interim presidential aircraft, is undergoing upgrades at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland before it's ready for use by the president.

The Boeing 747-8 jetliner, a gift from Qatar, will eventually replace the military-grade 747-2, but its exact features and specifications remain under wraps until completion.

A thermal study conducted by the Air Force found that the darker navy paint color initially proposed by President Trump during his first term would require additional testing to prevent overheating issues on the aircraft's surface.

The new Air Force One will feature a red, white, and navy blue livery, as well as a waving American flag design on its tail, a change from the traditional static flag used on previous presidential planes.

The interim VC-25B Bridge has been upgraded with state-of-the-art technology to prepare it for presidential transport until the new Air Force One is delivered.

The new Air Force One's tail design has been revamped to feature a wavy flag, a departure from the previous straight flag. This change was personally requested by President Trump, who has been vocal about his dislike for the old design. Speaking at Joint Base Andrews in June 2019, Trump praised the new flag as beautiful".

The outgoing Air Force One jet relied on four General Electric CF6-80C2B1 engines, each producing a significant 56,700 pounds of thrust. This powerful engine configuration enabled the plane to travel at speeds of up to 630 miles per hour and cover distances of over 7,800 miles without refueling.

In contrast, the new Air Force One features four GEnx-2B engines that boast an impressive 66,500 pounds of thrust each. These more efficient engines not only provide a boost in performance but also emit significantly less carbon dioxide during flight, reducing environmental impact by 16 tons per trip.

The upgraded engines are part of a broader effort to modernize the plane and prepare it for presidential transport. The VC-25B Bridge has been upgraded with state-of-the-art technology to ensure seamless transition from the old Air Force One. This interim solution will serve as a vital link between the outgoing and incoming planes until the new Air Force One is delivered.

The new Air Force One's capabilities have also seen significant improvements, with the plane now able to travel at speeds of up to 660 miles per hour and cover distances of over 8,900 miles without refueling. This enhanced range and speed make it an even more formidable tool for presidential travel.

As part of its development, the new Air Force One has undergone rigorous testing, including practice touch-and-go landings at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. The successful completion of these tests marks a significant milestone in the plane's preparation for presidential transport duties.

The new Air Force One will lack a key feature that its predecessor had: in-flight refueling capabilities. This decision to exclude this function was made to save costs, according to reports from Air and Space Forces Magazine.

Boeing's upcoming VC-25B planes will also not be equipped with aerial refueling systems, mirroring the design choice for the new Air Force One. This move is intended to reduce expenses associated with developing and maintaining these capabilities.

The interior of the outgoing presidential plane underwent relatively few changes over its 36-year service life. The beige walls and wooden paneling remained largely unchanged despite various presidents' attempts to update the furniture and decor.

Some cosmetic updates did occur, however, such as President Bill Clinton's decision to replace some chairs in the conference room with tan leather ones, while President Barack Obama opted for a darker chocolate brown finish on the same pieces of furniture.

The new Air Force One is notable for its luxurious features, including gold light fixtures and reclining massage chairs. The plane also boasts gleaming surfaces throughout its interior spaces.

A primary bedroom with an en-suite bathroom and walk-in shower is among the accommodations found in the new presidential jet. This private area is complemented by a common space featuring couches and private office areas for official business.

The luxury jet gifted by Qatar to President Trump has undergone significant changes to meet the requirements of the US presidential plane.

The cost of retrofitting this aircraft to serve as Air Force One remains classified, but it's understood that the total expense will be substantial. In June 2025, Secretary of the Air Force Troy E. Meink told Congress that the estimated cost would be less than $400 million.

However, some lawmakers have expressed concerns that the actual cost could reach up to $1 billion in taxpayer funds. This concern was highlighted when a $934 million transfer of funds from a nuclear modernization budget to a classified project was reported by The New York Times in July 2025.

The Air Force has not commented on these allegations, leaving uncertainty about the true extent of the costs involved in transforming this luxury jet into the US presidential plane.

Despite the challenges and potential costs associated with retrofitting the new Air Force One, President Trump has a functional private area to conduct official business within the aircraft.
