US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has arrived in Lisbon, Portugal, marking the final stop on a tour of NATO allies that has taken him across three countries.

Rubio's visit comes just a day after he delivered a speech in Athens, Greece, where he emphasized the importance of European nations upholding the values and traditions of ancient Greece to save Western civilization. The message highlights Rubio's efforts to strengthen ties with key international partners as part of his diplomatic role.

Upon arriving in Lisbon, Rubio is expected to express gratitude to Portuguese officials for their support in US military operations against Iran, specifically allowing the use of the Lajes Field air base in the Azores islands. Strategically located for refueling flights, this air base has been a crucial asset for US Air Force operations under an agreement with Portugal.

In contrast to neighboring Spain, which refused to grant permission for US military bases on its territory, Portugal's center-right government granted conditional approval for the use of Lajes Field.

In his visit to Portugal, US Senator Marco Rubio highlighted the country's importance as a strategic ally for the United States. He emphasized that reinforcing ties between the two nations was a key objective of his trip, underscoring the significance of their existing relationship.

Rubio's comments come amidst ongoing tensions with Spain, which has been at odds with the Trump administration over various issues. The US President has publicly expressed frustration with Spain's government and other European countries he perceives as not providing sufficient support for his policies.

The approval granted by Portugal's center-right government for the use of Lajes Field base was conditional, with officials stressing that it did not imply endorsement of any actions contrary to international law. They emphasized that Portugal is fulfilling its duties as a US ally in this context.

Criticism of the decision has come from some Portuguese political parties, with one left-wing group even filing a formal complaint against what they saw as an unlawful use of the base. As a result, the country's attorney general's office announced it would investigate the matter further.

Portugal's defense spending is significantly lower than many other NATO member countries. The country allocates just over 2% of its GDP to military expenditure, according to NATO estimates.

In an effort to strengthen ties with Portugal, Rubio emphasized the importance of having strong allies in Europe. This sentiment was echoed during his visit to Greece, where he expressed a desire for a robust European presence.

The strategic Lajes Field, used by the US since World War II, has undergone changes over the years. The base, which features a long runway suitable for heavy military aircraft, is now primarily utilized for refueling trans-Atlantic flights.
