# UN Refugee Agency Warns of Climate Risks Facing 90 Million Displaced People

A recent report by the UN refugee agency highlights that nearly three-quarters of forcibly displaced individuals live in areas highly exposed to climate risks.

A staggering 90 million people who have been forcibly displaced worldwide are now facing severe climate-related hazards in their host countries, according to a recent report by the UN refugee agency.

The report highlights that nearly three-quarters of these individuals live in areas highly exposed to climate risks such as droughts, floods, and extreme heat. These conditions not only exacerbate the difficulties they face but also make it increasingly challenging for lasting solutions to be found.

The timing of this report is particularly significant as it coincides with preparations for the COP31 climate conference in Turkey, which is set to take place soon. The UN refugee agency has used this opportunity to urge governments and other stakeholders to take immediate action to protect these vulnerable individuals.

As Anton Leis Garcia, the assistant high commissioner for operations at the UNHCR, noted, refugees are facing a "double injustice" - they are forced to flee conflicts that were not of their making and now find themselves on the frontlines of a climate crisis to which they have contributed least.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has sounded a warning about the impact of climate change on displaced people, highlighting that lasting solutions are increasingly threatened by rising temperatures and extreme weather events.

According to UNHCR data, more than two-thirds of refugees who returned home in the first half of this year went back to countries highly susceptible to climate-related hazards. In Syria, where nearly four million displaced individuals have recently returned, declining groundwater levels and climate shocks are undermining recovery efforts. The agency noted that last May's flooding along the Euphrates River caused significant damage and forced thousands to flee their homes once again.

In sub-Saharan Africa, UNHCR is concerned about the growing threat of extreme heat in refugee settlements, warning that by 2050, one in three such settlements could face 100 or more days of hazardous temperatures each year. Meanwhile, weather-related disasters are driving internal displacement within countries, resulting in over 255 million people being forced to leave their homes worldwide over the past decade, an average of around 70,000 individuals per day.

Severe flooding is forecasted to displace millions of people across East Africa by the end of 2026, according to recent predictions. Somalia, Kenya, South Sudan, and Uganda are expected to be severely affected, with up to three million people potentially forced to flee their homes.

The dire situation has been highlighted by UNHCR officials, who emphasize that climate change is no longer a distant threat but a harsh reality for millions of displaced individuals. These individuals are already struggling to rebuild their lives after losing their shelters and livelihoods due to the devastating effects of climate-related disasters.
