# Train Collision Kills at Least 64 People in Central Spain

At least 64 people have lost their lives and over 80 others are injured after two high-speed trains collided in central Spain on Wednesday. The accident occurred on a line that has seen another major incident just under a year ago.

Eyewitness Miguel, who was traveling with colleagues in the rear car of one train, described the impact as "a massive roar" that lasted for ten seconds, making it seem like the train might derail. He said they could see through their right-hand window that another train had been severely damaged.

Pictures from the scene show several carriages lying on their sides next to the tracks and others twisted at odd angles with sheared-off wheels. Debris is scattered around the countryside in the province of Toledo where the accident took place.

Emergency services are still searching for survivors amidst the wreckage, and officials have confirmed that 64 people have been killed so far according to The Associated Press. Earlier, regional President Emiliano García-Page reported at least 80 injuries among those on board.

The two trains were carrying more than 500 passengers in total when they crashed, prompting a major national response effort and raising concerns about the safety of Spain's high-speed rail network, which has been praised for its sophistication.

The investigation into the cause of the collision is still ongoing, but officials have confirmed that both trains were traveling in the same direction when the accident occurred.

According to initial reports, one train was forced into the rear of another that had stopped on the line, resulting in a significant impact and damage to both vehicles.

Emergency services are working around the clock to assist those affected by the crash, with an emergency phone line set up for families of the victims and local blood banks appealing for donations.

The nearby municipality of Urda has been preparing to accommodate the injured, with officials preparing a sports hall to provide medical care and support to those in need.

Spanish football authorities have also announced that they will be postponing some Copa del Rey soccer fixtures as a mark of respect for the victims of the crash.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene within about 20 minutes of the crash, including a helicopter, police and ambulances. One eyewitness described seeing part of the train hanging down an embankment and a fire in one carriage. The witness also reported seeing dead people on the ground.

The devastating crash marks the second major collision this year involving high-speed trains operated by Renfe and Iryo on the Madrid to Seville route. In January, a similar accident occurred when a train jumped the track and collided with an oncoming train, resulting in 45 fatalities. This incident is particularly concerning given the country's history of fatal rail accidents.

The crash has also led to tributes from across Europe, with many countries expressing their condolences to Spain. The Spanish football authorities have announced that they will be postponing some Copa del Rey soccer fixtures as a mark of respect for the victims of the crash.
