# Taryn Williams Achieves Financial Independence on Teacher's Salary

Achieving financial independence on a teacher's salary is a remarkable feat, and one that Taryn Williams has accomplished by the age of 34.

Over the past decade, Williams has been diligent in her saving and investing efforts, managing to set aside $140,000 through a pay-yourself-first budget system. This disciplined approach allowed her to balance financial goals with life experiences, ensuring she still had time for travel and concerts when possible.

Growing up without exposure to personal finance concepts was a significant challenge for Williams, who lacked knowledge about investing and retirement planning. Most people around her lived paycheck to paycheck, leaving her to educate herself on the topic from an early age.

Williams' journey towards financial independence began in high school and college, where she started learning about personal finance and investing. Recognizing the importance of time in accumulating wealth through compound interest, Williams made a point to start researching online resources, including The Financial Diet, to learn more about investing for retirement.

I began exploring investment platforms that offered a low barrier to entry, such as Acorns, allowing me to invest small amounts of money at a time.

As I entered the workforce after graduating from college, I started setting aside a portion of my income each month, gradually building up my savings over time.

In addition to the retirement account provided by my employer, I also opened a Roth Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to take control of my investments and make more informed decisions about my financial future.

Over the past decade, despite earning a modest teacher's salary or less after furthering my education, my consistent savings have accumulated to six figures.

I continued on my path, making sure to prioritize investments while still enjoying life's experiences. This meant allocating a significant portion of my income towards saving and investing, but not sacrificing too much in terms of lifestyle. I found that by following a pay-yourself-first budget system, I was able to make steady progress towards my financial goals.

This approach involved determining how much I needed to invest in order to max out my retirement accounts, such as my Roth IRA, and then allocating the remaining funds to other expenses. By doing so, I was able to strike a balance between saving for the future and enjoying life today.

While some may have chosen to adopt a more extreme approach to saving, known as the FIRE movement, I didn't feel the need to make drastic changes to my lifestyle in order to reach my financial goals. Instead, I focused on making steady progress over time, which ultimately allowed me to reach a level of financial stability that I'm comfortable with.

I've now reached a point where I have a significant amount invested, exceeding $140,000, and I'm confident that compound growth will continue to work in my favor. This means that even if I don't contribute another dollar towards my retirement savings, I'll still be on track to reach my goal of having around $5 million by the time I turn 67.

Knowing that I have this foundation in place gives me a sense of peace and flexibility, allowing me to make choices about how I want to live my life without worrying about the financial implications.

Reaching a state of financial security has given me a sense of calm that I've never experienced before.

With my Coast FIRE foundation in place, I can now afford to take more time off from work, pursue further education, or travel without worrying about the financial implications of these choices. This newfound freedom allows me to focus on enjoying life and exploring opportunities that bring me joy and fulfillment.

Ultimately, the key to achieving one's personal finance goals is to set a retirement target that aligns with individual circumstances, priorities, and aspirations. By determining what steps are necessary to reach this goal, individuals can create a tailored plan for securing their financial future.
