# Sudan-Egypt Border Airstrike Kills Dozens of Gold Miners

A Sudanese rights group has accused Egypt's air force of carrying out an airstrike that killed dozens of gold miners on the Sudan-Egypt border.

Airstrikes on the Sudan-Egypt border have reportedly resulted in the deaths of dozens of gold miners, according to a Sudanese rights group. The Emergency Lawyers organisation has accused Egypt's air force of carrying out the attack.

The incident occurred at Jabal al-Uqaydat, an informal gold mining site that has been targeted by airstrikes before. In June, 23 workers were killed in an attack that Egypt did not claim responsibility for, but said was part of a "large-scale operation" against illegal gold mining within its borders.

Survivors of the latest attack have described chaotic scenes as they fled from the mountainous region. The exact circumstances of the incident remain unclear, with no official comment from Egyptian authorities.

The border between Sudan and Egypt is disputed, with both countries claiming ownership of the resource-rich Halayeb triangle. This has led to tensions in the region, particularly given Cairo's key alliance with Sudan's army as it battles against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

Egypt's involvement in the region comes amidst ongoing military operations aimed at combating illegal gold mining, which is reportedly a major source of income for armed groups in the area.

The airstrike on Saturday is reported to have had devastating consequences for civilian miners in the region. Preliminary information suggests that at least 72 people lost their lives in the attack, although efforts are ongoing to document and verify the exact casualty toll.

Two survivors of the incident shared harrowing accounts of their escape from the mine with AFP. One miner, Abdelaziz Youssef, said a jet appeared overhead around 8:00 am on Saturday and struck multiple times, resulting in numerous fatalities. Another survivor, Sharaf Ali, estimated that thousands of people were working at the remote site when it was hit.

Ali described the aftermath of the airstrike, saying that people scattered in all directions as they fled from the area. Many bodies were seen lying on the ground, while others are feared trapped under rubble due to their proximity to the mine. The survivors' accounts highlight the scale of destruction caused by the attack.

The conflict in Sudan has already claimed over 200,000 lives since April 2023 and created a severe humanitarian crisis. As a result, many people have been forced into the gold mining industry, which is seen as a lucrative source of income for both warring parties.

The mountainous region along the Egypt-Sudan border is rich in mineral deposits, stretching hundreds of kilometers and encompassing the disputed Halayeb triangle.

According to reports, the attack on gold miners occurred within Sudanese territory, highlighting a long-standing issue with territorial control and resource exploitation.

Egyptian authorities have been accused of seeking to expand their influence over Sudan's natural resources, perpetuating violence in the region through repeated airstrikes against mining operations.

The complex web of interests and rivalries along the border has led to a volatile situation, with Egypt prioritizing its own security concerns despite supporting Sudan's army chief.
