# Space42 Expands Reach in Global Space Industry with Strategic Investments and Partnerships

The Abu Dhabi-based company has committed $1.7 billion to new projects as part of its strategy to diversify its customer base and revenue streams over the next few years.

Abu Dhabi-based Space42 is expanding its reach in the space industry beyond the UAE, having established itself as one of the region's leading names in space technology and AI.

The company's expertise lies at the intersection of satellite communications, Earth observation, and artificial intelligence capabilities, using space-based infrastructure to deliver connectivity and transform satellite imagery into actionable insights.

Space42 has committed $1.7 billion to new projects as part of its strategy to diversify its customer base and revenue streams over the next few years. The company currently generates 90% of its revenue in the UAE, with the remaining 10% coming from international markets.

Government contracts have been the backbone of Space42's revenue to date, accounting for approximately 80% of total earnings, while commercial customers contribute around 20%.

Space42's revenue has seen significant growth in the first half of 2026, rising by 15% year-on-year to reach $260 million.

This increase in earnings is expected to continue, as the company remains committed to expanding its operations through strategic investments and partnerships.

In an effort to fuel further expansion, Space42's management is considering boosting its capital plan from the current $1.7 billion level, with a decision likely to be announced at the company's annual investor day next month.

The company is also open to exploring acquisition opportunities that would enhance its capabilities in areas such as geospatial intelligence, where specialized analytical models and established customer bases could provide valuable insights for various industries.

Last month, Space42 made headlines by signing a binding agreement with Viasat to establish Equatys, a platform designed to connect smartphones directly to satellites.

Space42's ambitious plans to expand its reach in the global market have taken another significant step forward as it continues to develop Equatys, a revolutionary platform that will connect smartphones directly to satellites.

To support this venture, Viasat has committed $400 million in equity, while Space42 is contributing $600 million. This substantial investment underscores the company's determination to diversify its geographic presence and tap into previously untapped markets.

The introduction of direct-to-device technology promises to broaden the addressable market significantly, potentially making mobile satellite services more accessible and convenient for a wider range of users who do not require specialized equipment like satellite phones.

Equatys is expected to launch by 2029 and will initially comprise fewer than 200 satellites. However, plans are already underway to expand this constellation to 2,800 as the platform continues to grow and evolve.

The key to Equatys' success lies in its ability to leverage relationships with mobile network operators worldwide, with an estimated 400 partnerships planned. This shared infrastructure will enable seamless integration with existing direct-to-device satellite networks, allowing for more efficient use of satellite capacity when operating outside primary coverage areas.

The vision for Space42's satellite communications network is ambitious: to make space-based voice and data services accessible to billions of users worldwide. According to Sabbagh, this could be achieved by transforming the industry from its current state of limited accessibility to a more inclusive model.

Currently, satellite connectivity comes with a premium price tag due to its relatively high cost, which limits its use for some users. However, Space42 aims to change this by offering services at a comparable price point to those delivered through terrestrial platforms.

As new services are rolled out, there will be a transition period during which subscriber bases need to be built and commercial packages established before adoption can take hold. Sabbagh estimates that this process could take anywhere from one to three years.

Space42's strategy involves integrating satellite communications with Earth observation and AI-enabled analysis within a single business framework. This approach enables the aggregation of observations, identification of objects, and comparison of changes over time, supporting analysts in their investigations.

The technology developed by Space42 is highly relevant when working with synthetic aperture radar (SAR), which constructs images of the Earth's surface using radar signals and their reflections.

Unlike conventional optical imaging that relies on reflected sunlight and can be hindered by darkness or cloud cover, SAR enables observations in conditions where optical imagery may be limited. This makes it a valuable tool for gathering information at night or in areas with adverse weather conditions. The ability to operate independently of these constraints is crucial for various applications.

Space42's technology will only prove successful if the company can turn its technological capabilities into commercially viable services that can compete across markets at scale and at a sustainable cost.
