# Sephora Launches Project Hearts Not Hate Initiative Against Appearance-Based Hate

Sephora has launched an initiative to combat appearance-based hate in partnership with Vogue Business, marking the beginning of Project Hearts Not Hate.

Sephora has launched a global initiative to combat appearance-based hate in partnership with Vogue Business, marking the beginning of Project Hearts Not Hate.

The initiative was unveiled at an evening event held at the Shangri-La Paris, where guests were treated to conversations, cocktails, and dinner. The event served as a platform for Sephora's leadership to emphasize their commitment to tackling this pressing issue. Guillaume Motte, Sephora's president and global CEO, emphasized that Project Hearts Not Hate is not just a project but a long-term initiative aimed at making a meaningful impact.

In his opening remarks, Motte acknowledged the prevalence of appearance-based hate, stating that people experience it due to their looks, and that Sephora wants to help change these perceptions. He expressed humility in acknowledging that this will be an ongoing effort, requiring collective action from individuals and organizations alike. According to Motte, even small actions can make a significant difference.

To kick-start the initiative, Sephora has pledged to donate to a relevant cause for every Sephora Collection product sold on October 9-10. The company is also introducing S Training, a comprehensive methodology designed to prevent, intervene, and follow up when someone experiences hate due to their appearance. During a panel discussion, Deborah Yeh, Sephora's global chief marketing officer, emphasized the importance of living the brand's purpose through concrete actions rather than just advertising.

A global survey conducted by Ipsos BVA has shed light on the prevalence of appearance-based discrimination worldwide. The study polled over 20,000 adults across 10 markets and found that a staggering seven in ten individuals have experienced some form of appearance-based hate.

The data reveals that nearly one in two people reported experiencing such incidents within the last year alone. According to Adelaïde Zulfikarpasic, CEO of Ipsos BVA's society division, this issue is a widespread phenomenon affecting millions globally.

The issue at hand is one of hate based on physical appearance, where individuals are targeted and discriminated against due to their skin tone, hair texture, height, weight, or other physical characteristics.

According to Ipsos BVA's survey data, the top three factors contributing to this phenomenon are weight, origin or ethnicity, and sexual orientation. This widespread issue affects millions of people globally, with many experiencing hurtful judgments, bullying, and exclusion because of their appearance.

To combat this problem, experts emphasize the importance of building a strong sense of community as a form of protection against appearance-based hate. When individuals feel safe, loved, included, and accepted within their community, they develop a stronger sense of belonging and are better equipped to cope with such challenges.

Despite a high level of awareness about these issues, there is often a gap between knowing how to help and actually taking action. Many people witness situations where others are targeted because of their appearance but hesitate to intervene due to uncertainty about how to react.

The survey reveals that a significant majority of people expect brands to play a role in promoting positive change. A staggering 74% believe that beauty brands have a responsibility to influence beauty standards and representation.

The Sephora Training program aims to empower allies and bystanders to prevent and address appearance-based hate. According to Yeh, the program's goal is to equip individuals with the skills they need to intervene effectively in such situations.

The evening at Sephora continued with a lively gathering on the terrace, featuring guests from various backgrounds, including music, film, sports, and fashion.
