# Russian Shahed Drone Intercepts Suggest Ukraine's Air Defenses Remain Effective

Despite a slowdown in Starlink internet services, Ukraine has intercepted 74% of Russian jet-powered Shaheds from October 14 to 24.

Ukraine's air defenses have held strong despite a 10-day slowdown in Starlink internet services, which had been reported to be hindering high-speed interceptor drones.

According to analysts at the Institute for the Study of War, Ukraine intercepted 74% of Russian jet-powered Shaheds from October 14 to 24. This rate is just 3 percentage points lower than the typical interception rate of 77%. The significant number of interceptions suggests that Ukrainian air defenses are still largely effective against these new threats.

The data released by Ukraine's air force indicates that Russia launched hundreds of turbojet attack drones over the 10-day period, highlighting the scale of their assault. Despite this, many intercepts were made possible due to Ukrainian fighter jets countering Russian jet Shaheds with air-to-air missiles or guns.

Many experts consider Ukrainian fighter aircraft to be the primary and most successful defense against jet Shaheds, a view that was echoed by Col. Yuriy Ihnat, a spokesperson for Ukraine's air force.

Ukraine is relying on its air force to counter the new Russian Shahed drones that have been wreaking havoc in the country. The Ukrainian military is counting on its helicopters and fighter jets to take down these unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The F-16 Fighting Falcon, a key aircraft in this fight, has proven itself capable of shooting down multiple Shaheds per night. In April, Ukraine's air force spokesperson mentioned that one F-16 could potentially bring down 10 Russian drones in a single evening.

The F-16 is equipped with the M61A1 Vulcan, a powerful six-barrel rotary cannon that fires 20mm rounds at high speed. To bolster its defenses, Kyiv recently requisitioned over 50,000 of these rounds from Denmark.

This large cache of ammunition should last for roughly 100 sorties, but experts warn that using the F-16's gun to shoot down Shaheds comes with some risks and complications.

Ukraine's air defense system has been severely tested by Russia's recent deployment of jet-powered drones. These advanced drones have significantly increased their speed and maneuverability, making them a formidable challenge for Ukrainian defenses.

Prior to this development, Ukraine had reported high interception rates against propeller-powered Shaheds, with some months seeing success rates of over 90%. This was largely due to the widespread adoption of interceptor drones, which are relatively inexpensive compared to traditional missiles. These small drones have proven effective in taking down slower-moving targets.

However, the introduction of turbojet-powered Shaheds has forced Ukraine to adapt its air defense strategies. The new generation of interceptors capable of catching and destroying these faster drones is still in its early stages of development. It remains to be seen whether these new systems will be able to keep pace with Russia's advanced drone technology.

The Starlink slowdown, which temporarily disabled the system when a drone exceeded 100 mph, has highlighted some of the challenges facing Ukrainian air defense efforts. Despite this setback, Ukraine continues to evolve its designs and strategies in an effort to counter the growing threat posed by Russia's jet-powered drones.

The connectivity issues affecting Ukraine's Starlink network have yet to be fully explained.

Despite these problems, it appears that they had a limited impact on Ukraine's ability to intercept Russia's Shahed drones, with the country's interception rate only decreasing by a few percent.

Ukrainian forces continue to adapt and refine their strategies in response to Russia's evolving tactics.
