A recent outbreak of foodborne illness has been linked to contaminated iceberg lettuce, highlighting the need for improved methods of washing and processing produce.

A recent outbreak linked to contaminated iceberg lettuce has raised concerns about the safety of produce, particularly among consumers who rely on "triple-washed products for protection against foodborne illness. However, industrial washing may not be enough to eliminate pathogens that have already taken hold on produce.

Researchers at the University of Southern California are exploring a critical aspect of food processing: the chemical reactions between disinfectants and food itself. These interactions can create new compounds whose effects on human health remain poorly understood.

According to Adam Simpson, an assistant professor in civil and environmental engineering at USC Viterbi School of Engineering, food processing is often treated as an industrial process that involves manipulating chemical groups within food matrices. This manipulation can lead to the incorporation of chemicals into food itself.

Food safety testing typically focuses on detecting known contaminants like pesticides or PFAS on a food's surface or within its tissues. However, Simpson's research takes a different approach by examining transformation products - new compounds formed when processing chemicals react with proteins, fats, and other components of food.

The creation of these transformation products highlights the complex chemistry involved in food processing, which can have significant implications for human health. Further study is needed to fully understand the risks associated with these newly formed compounds.

The structure of food is a complex entity known as the food matrix, which determines how disinfectants interact with food at the molecular level. This interaction can lead to the formation of new compounds that may not be immediately apparent.

Research has shown that chlorine-based disinfectants can alter amino acids and fats in food, resulting in the creation of chlorotyrosines and fatty acid chlorohydrins. These compounds can become embedded within proteins and fats until digestion takes place, potentially leading to undetected residues.

When tree nuts are bleached with sodium hypochlorite, a common disinfectant ingredient, researchers have found that it produces fatty acid chlorohydrins. A recent study published in the Journal of Hazardous Materials examined these compounds' effects on cells.

The study's findings suggest a potential health risk to consumers, but further research is needed to understand how the body metabolizes these compounds and whether they cause long-term harm.

As part of ongoing research, Simpson's lab has partnered with the Southern California Center for Chronic Disease Research and Prevention to test synthesized fatty acid chlorohydrins on hepatocytes, which are the primary functional cells of the liver.

The research aims to understand how food-safety chemicals interact with different types of food.

Simpson's findings suggest that disinfectants do not have a uniform effect on all foods, and this could explain why some studies produce conflicting results.

A recent study looked at the impact of chlorine treatment on chicken, beef, fish, and raw milk, expecting to see an increase in chlorotyrosines and fatty acid chlorohydrins.

However, the researchers found that these compounds were already present in significant amounts in meat and fish before treatment, with standard chlorine doses adding little more.

This unexpected result highlights the complexity of food chemistry and the limitations of extrapolating findings from one type of food to another.

The formation of these chemical byproducts can be influenced by various factors, including how food is prepared.

The use of chemicals in food processing has raised concerns about their impact on human health. However, the triple-washed label, which implies a certain level of cleanliness, does not necessarily guarantee that the food has been treated with standardized processes.

Chemical concentrations and contact times can vary significantly among different processors and products. This lack of standardization raises questions about the effectiveness of these treatments in ensuring food safety.

Researchers are now examining the potential long-term effects of transformation products on human health. These byproducts, formed when chemicals interact with food, may pose a risk to consumers even if they are present in low quantities.

The use of chemicals primarily for aesthetic purposes has been questioned by some experts. For instance, tree nuts and whey protein are often bleached with chlorine or similar oxidants to enhance their appearance, despite having no nutritional value.

The debate surrounding the use of chemical oxidants in food processing centers on balancing short-term safety against potential long-term health risks. While these chemicals may be effective in preventing foodborne illnesses, their impact on human health over time is still not well understood.

Experts emphasize that eating fresh produce, whether organic or nonorganic, is generally a healthier option than relying solely on processed foods. However, the use of chemical oxidants during processing can leave a hidden chemical memory" in the food's chemistry, which may have unintended consequences for human health.

The study found that when tree nuts are treated with sodium hypochlorite to remove bacteria and extend shelf life, a toxic compound called fatty acid chlorohydrin forms as a byproduct.

This chemical can leach into the food's chemistry, potentially leading to unintended health consequences for consumers.

Phys.org: https://phys.org/news/2026-10-food-safety-chemicals-react.html

A mesh Wi-Fi system's internal antennas provide seamless connections and handovers between devices.

Mesh Wi-Fi systems have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their ability to provide reliable coverage in large spaces. However, despite their numerous benefits, one aspect of mesh routers has gone largely unnoticed - the absence of external antennas.

At first glance, it may seem counterintuitive that mesh routers don't come with visible external antennas like traditional Wi-Fi routers do. After all, a common assumption is that more prominent antenna presence equates to better signal strength and range.

However, experts argue that burying antennas within mesh routers actually presents a technical advantage in terms of design goals. This approach allows for a more streamlined aesthetic while also reducing potential interference from external sources.

In contrast to traditional single-router systems, mesh networks prioritize seamless communication between individual units rather than maximizing the signal's reach. As a result, the primary focus is on ensuring efficient backhaul connections between routers rather than amplifying range.

The absence of external antennas in mesh routers may seem like an oversight at first, but it's actually a deliberate design choice that benefits overall system performance.

Mesh Wi-Fi systems rely on internal antennas to provide seamless connections and handovers between devices. These omnidirectional antennas cast a wide net, allowing routers to quickly detect nearby devices and switch connection duties as needed, maintaining consistent bandwidth throughout the process.

The use of external antennas can introduce potential issues with mesh technology. If adjustable, misaligned external antennas can weaken connection strength to certain devices, while their long design makes them susceptible to breakage during moves or accidental knocks on tall surfaces.

Better mesh routers may require a larger number of internal antennas than usual due to their dedicated backhaul setup. This configuration splits bandwidth between the router's components and connected devices, potentially slowing down device performance if not properly balanced. A cluttered array of external antennas would compromise both functionality and aesthetics.

Internal antennas do have some drawbacks, however. They can be more prone to interference from nearby electronic components, but this issue has been addressed through design optimizations that minimize its impact on system performance.

The cost of manufacturing external antennas can be a significant factor for mesh Wi-Fi vendors. While the price increase may seem minor for an individual router, it can add up quickly when considering thousands or even millions of units produced.

Moving internal antennas can also enable more streamlined and minimalist designs that appeal to consumers. This is particularly important for mesh systems, which often require multiple routers placed throughout a home. Aesthetics play a role in the decision-making process, as many shoppers prefer devices that blend into their surroundings rather than standing out like traditional routers.

The shift towards internal antennas has proven to be a winning strategy for mesh Wi-Fi vendors, offering both performance advantages and cost savings.

Engadget: https://www.engadget.com/2277036/why-mesh-wifi-systems-dont-have-antennas-routers-do/

A new study found that young adults perceive physicians who use social media as more approachable and trustworthy than their own medical professionals.

A new study from Virginia Commonwealth University has shed light on the significant influence that popular TikTok doctors have over their Gen Z followers. According to the research, these young adults perceive physicians who use social media as more approachable and trustworthy than their own medical professionals.

The study found that even when physician-influencers are promoting products, their followers still see them in a positive light. This is particularly striking given that many of these individuals have not verified the medical credentials of the influencers they follow on TikTok. It appears that the mere presence of a doctor on social media can carry significant weight with young consumers.

The researchers attribute this phenomenon to the fact that people are already inclined to trust experts, and the addition of a doctor's social media presence amplifies this effect. "We're already trained to respond positively to credentialed experts," said Suzanne Makarem, co-author of the study and associate professor of marketing at VCU.

Makarem notes that the fact that these doctors are choosing to use their influence for educational purposes can actually increase their credibility in the eyes of their followers. "They're taking the time to educate me," one respondent is quoted as saying about a physician-influencer they admire.

The researchers have dubbed this phenomenon the "mere social media presence effect." This suggests that simply having a doctor's endorsement on social media may carry more weight than advice from a person's own medical professional.

Gen Zers have been found to rely heavily on social media for health information, a trend that is significantly more prevalent among this age group than in previous generations.

Researchers analyzed 330 TikTok videos featuring 11 U.S.-based medical doctors who have gained significant influence and following on the platform. These "mega influencers" use their online presence to share health-related content with their millions of followers.

The study's findings suggest that these physician-influencers are distinct from other social media personalities, as they tend to present themselves in a more professional manner while still sharing personal details about their lives. They often wear medical attire, even when discussing non-medical topics, which appears to have a significant impact on their credibility with followers.

Followers of these physicians seem to be swayed by the accoutrements of medicine that they display online, such as stethoscopes and diplomas hanging on walls. The researchers found that followers were willing to accept the physicians' credentials at face value, even if they had not been verified.

The physician-influencers also use their platforms to promote their own products and services, demonstrating a clear financial motivation for their actions. By showcasing themselves exercising, using supplements, and promoting books they have written, these influencers are able to build trust with their followers while generating income.

Young followers on TikTok are not deterred by the financial motivations behind their favorite doctors' online presence.

They tend to view these physicians as genuine experts who genuinely care about their health and wellbeing, rather than just trying to make a profit.

The researchers found that followers of these TikTok doctors have high levels of adherence to their advice, with many buying products or following treatment plans recommended by the influencers.

This level of trust is likely due in part to the personalized nature of social media, where users can engage directly with the people they admire and feel like they're getting tailored guidance.

When asked about their experiences with traditional healthcare providers, followers often report feeling disconnected and unvalued.

Physicians who have hesitated to join social media may want to reconsider their stance, as a significant number of health and wellness influencers on platforms are unconventional medical professionals.

According to research, conventional medical professionals such as doctors, dentists, and nurses make up only about 17% of the health and wellness influencers online. This is despite the potential benefits of using social media to connect with patients and promote their work.

Physicians who do decide to join social media can be effective in promoting their expertise and values, and may even find that it helps them build stronger relationships with their patients.

Phys.org: https://phys.org/news/2026-10-popular-tiktok-docs-big-gen.html

A new neurotechnology startup called Bridge is launching to develop a wearable device that can translate brain signals into practical actions without the need for surgical intervention.

A New Neurotech Startup Launches to Rival Sam Altman's Merge Labs

A new neurotechnology startup has emerged in a rapidly growing field, aiming to translate brain signals into practical actions. The company joins a list of prominent players, including Elon Musk's Neuralink, Synchron, Paradromics, and Precision Neuroscience, all working on brain-computer interfaces for individuals who have lost motor or speech abilities.

These existing approaches typically require surgical intervention, which is why the founder and CEO of Bridge, Will Biederman, has chosen to take a different route. According to Biederman, his vision diverges from those of other companies in this field, and he wants to develop a wearable device that can be used by many more people than an implanted brain-computer interface.

Biederman developed the chip initially licensed for use by Neuralink as part of his PhD work, but his goal with Bridge is to create a non-invasive solution. This contrasts with the 100 or so individuals worldwide who have received implanted brain-computer interfaces as part of clinical trials, including those testing Neuralink's device.

The risks associated with neurosurgery cannot be underestimated, Biederman emphasizes, which means that any new devices in this space must offer high levels of safety and benefit.

The performance of wearable brain-computer interfaces has been hindered by poor signal quality due to the weakening of electrical signals as they pass through bone and skin before reaching external sensors.

As a result, most companies in this space have resorted to recording electrical impulses directly from neurons in the brain, which has enabled paralyzed individuals to control electronic devices, move robotic arms, and communicate in real time with their thoughts.

However, Bridge Neurotech is challenging conventional wisdom by exploring an alternative approach using ultrasound technology. This method involves bouncing high-frequency sound waves off moving red blood cells to measure the speed and direction of blood flow in the brain.

Research has shown that fluctuations in blood flow closely follow neural activity, making it a viable indirect indicator of brain function. Bridge Neurotech is currently trialing an instrument that uses this principle to image brain function in the UK.

The company's approach differs from those taken by Neuralink and others, which rely on direct recordings from neurons. This distinction has sparked debate among experts, with some arguing that the natural delay between neural activity and blood flow changes could be a significant drawback for applications requiring real-time feedback.

The ultrasound-based brain-computer interface developed by Bridge neurotech startup has a notable limitation - it can only capture slower variations in neural activity. This lag time could be a significant issue for applications requiring real-time feedback, such as controlling robotic limbs or typing rapidly.

To address this challenge, Bridge is planning to utilize predictive AI models to minimize the delay and enhance the performance of its interface. By leveraging machine learning algorithms, the company aims to bridge the gap between neural activity and blood flow changes.

The startup's first clinical study is underway in Redwood City, California, where a small group of volunteers will have an ultrasound probe placed on the side of their head. This observational study involves healthy adults as well as individuals who have undergone skull surgery, with no treatments or diagnoses involved.

The device used by Bridge resembles something akin to headphones and sits on the temporal window above the ear. The probes are equipped with semiconductor silicon chips from Butterfly Network's portable ultrasound technology, which will record brain activity while participants engage in various activities like listening, watching, moving, and speaking.

The skull's thinnest part makes it an ideal location for imaging brain activity through ultrasound technology, according to Bridge co-founder Biederman. This is crucial because bone can scatter and absorb sound waves, posing technical challenges for noninvasive imaging.

Researchers at Caltech and the University of Southern California had previously demonstrated the feasibility of using ultrasound-based brain-computer interfaces in a 2024 study, but their method required part of the skull to be surgically removed. This "window" allowed ultrasound waves to pass through, enabling researchers to read and decode brain activity. Bridge will need to overcome this technical hurdle if it is to succeed with its noninvasive interface vision.

Wired: https://www.wired.com/story/bridge-neurotech-startup-rival-sam-altman-merge-labs/

Astronomers have discovered a star moving at an incredible speed through space, traveling over 8% the speed of light and providing new insights into the Milky Way.

Astronomers have discovered a star that is defying all expectations by moving at an incredible speed through space.

The star, designated S301, has been found to be traveling at more than 8% of the speed of light, making it one of the fastest-moving stars ever recorded.

This remarkable discovery sheds new light on the mysterious heart of our galaxy, the Milky Way, and provides a unique opportunity for scientists to study this region up close.

The extreme velocity of S301 is not an isolated phenomenon, but rather part of a larger pattern of high-speed stars circling around the black hole at the center of our galaxy.

This superhighway of stars is likely due to the intense gravity in the vicinity of the black hole, which would normally rip apart the clouds of gas and dust that give birth to new stars.

The existence of these stars is a surprise because they should not be able to form under normal conditions, given the extreme environment surrounding the black hole.

Astronomers are eager to learn more about this remarkable system, as it could reveal hidden properties of the black hole at the center of our galaxy and test gravity in one of the universe's most extreme environments.

The region surrounding the Milky Way's central black hole is notoriously difficult to observe due to the Earth's atmosphere distorting our view and massive clouds of dust and gas obscuring visibility.

Astronomers have struggled to resolve individual stars in this area, but recent advances have allowed them to peer through the veil and pick out stars near the galactic centre for the first time.

Gillessen notes that even with very good eyesight, tiny objects like these stars can be easily overlooked, much like a glow worm next to the headlight of a car.

The problem is further compounded by the need for an extremely large telescope to resolve such distant and faint objects, with some estimates suggesting a mirror diameter of 30-40 meters would be required.

However, astronomers are impatient and unwilling to wait for the construction of such massive telescopes, which could take years or even decades to complete.

To overcome this challenge, researchers have turned to adaptive optics technology, which involves using a deformable mirror that can adjust its shape hundreds or thousands of times per second to compensate for atmospheric distortions.

The European Southern Observatory in Germany is home to an adaptive optics mirror that has revolutionized our understanding of the Milky Way's mysterious heart.

This cutting-edge technology uses a deformable mirror just 2 millimeters thick, which can be shaped by magnetic forces to create tiny surface deformations hundreds or thousands of times per second. This allows for incredibly precise adjustments to compensate for atmospheric distortions.

The mirror has enabled researchers to capture images that were previously unimaginable, with resolutions that seem almost magical. However, the real breakthrough came in 2002 when a star called S0-2 was discovered, which would go on to dominate the field for years to come.

S0-2 is an incredibly fast-moving star that comes within just 17 light hours of Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy. At its closest point, it reaches speeds of around 7,650 kilometers per second, which is almost 3% of the speed of light.

By tracking S0-2's orbit, researchers could begin to weigh whatever was sitting at the heart of the galaxy. The data suggested that Sagittarius A* had to be an enormously massive and compact object, compelling evidence that it was indeed a black hole.

The next major leap forward came in 2018 when S0-2 made another close pass by Sagittarius A*. This time, researchers used interferometry, a technique that combines light from multiple telescopes to create the effect of one much larger observatory. The result was unprecedented precision in tracking the star's orbit and pinning down the mass of the black hole.

The work has been instrumental in earning its lead researchers a Nobel prize in 2020, but it's just the beginning of unraveling the mysteries of our galaxy's behemoth black hole.

The S stars' unusually short lifetimes suggest they cannot have migrated into the galactic centre gradually over millions of years.

According to lead researcher Gillessen, these stars are incredibly young, with a lifespan shorter than the time between the dinosaurs' extinction and the present day.

This raises questions about how such young stars ended up in the vicinity of Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the Milky Way's centre.

One theory proposes that these S stars began as binary systems in more distant orbits, which then drifted too close to the black hole.

If they were torn apart by the intense gravitational forces near the event horizon, one star would be flung out of the galaxy at high speed while the other was drawn into a perilously tight orbit around Sagittarius A*.

This process could have accelerated their journey to the galactic centre, allowing them to reach their current locations within the relatively short time frame of their lifespan.

A cluster of stars called IRS-13E has caught the attention of astronomers studying the Milky Way's mysterious heart. Located near the galactic centre, this star cluster may harbour a black hole at its core, potentially capable of accelerating nearby stars to their extreme velocities.

While the presence of a black hole in IRS-13E remains unconfirmed, scientists are intrigued by the possibility that it could be responsible for the rapid movement of these stars. Further investigation is needed to determine if this theory holds up, as the region surrounding the galactic centre is notoriously difficult to study.

The process of studying a black hole like Sagittarius A*, located at the heart of the Milky Way, is akin to trying to understand the inner workings of the sun without getting too close. While we can observe the matter swirling around it and even capture images of its shadow using advanced telescopes, the black hole itself remains invisible.

Black holes are relatively simple entities, with only two key properties: mass and spin. Fortunately, scientists have already determined the mass of Sagittarius A*, thanks to the work of researchers Genzel and Ghez. However, determining the spin of this massive black hole is a more complex task.

Astrophysicist Ziri Younsi notes that measuring the spin of a black hole is an extremely challenging task. While it's possible to estimate the spin of distant black holes through various methods, these approaches are not applicable for Sagittarius A*. The event horizon of this black hole remains elusive, much like trying to pin down its spin.

The Event Horizon Telescope captured a stunning image of Sagittarius A* in 2022, revealing the swirling patterns of magnetic fields surrounding the black hole. However, the picture is more of an artistic representation than a precise measurement, as it relies on indirect observations and complex algorithms.

Measuring the spin of Sagittarius A* directly remains one of the biggest challenges in astrophysics today. One possible solution lies in observing stars that orbit close to the black hole, allowing scientists to gauge its influence and ultimately determine its spin.

The gravitational pull of the Milky Way's central black hole has been found to have an unusual effect on nearby stars, causing them to move in a way that can reveal information about the black hole's spin.

When the black hole rotates, it creates an "imprint" on the surrounding space-time fabric, affecting the orbits of nearby stars. This phenomenon is known as precession, and by measuring its effects precisely, scientists can infer the black hole's spin rate.

Researchers are particularly interested in studying stars that orbit close to the black hole, such as S2, which has a highly elliptical path around the galaxy's center. By monitoring this star's motion over time, they hope to gain insights into the black hole's behavior and its impact on the surrounding environment.

Recently, scientists have spotted another nearby star, S301, using the Very Large Telescope in Chile. This star is notable for being only 8 billion kilometers from the black hole at its closest approach, making it an ideal candidate for studying the black hole's effects. With a orbital period of just 7 years, S301 offers a more sensitive probe of the black hole's gravity and spin.

While measuring the black hole's spin may seem straightforward, it requires precise calculations and long-term observations to account for any errors or uncertainties.
Apple has released its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, priced at $2,000, which competes with Samsung and other innovators in the market.

Apple has finally joined the foldable phone party, albeit a bit late in the game. The tech giant's iPhone Duo is its latest attempt to take on the likes of Samsung and other innovators who have been experimenting with this new technology.

Motorola, on the other hand, has been producing several generations of updated Razrs, including the flagship 2026 Razr Ultra. This phone is priced significantly lower than Apple's offering, coming in at a substantial $500 less than the iPhone Duo's hefty price tag of $2,000.

One of the main attractions of Motorola's Razr Ultra is that it offers an alternative to the Apple ecosystem, which can be restrictive for some users. Those who prefer Android have more flexibility with their phone choices, as they're not reliant on a single brand for their hardware needs.

The iPhone Duo and Razr Ultra cater to different demographics, making them appealing to distinct groups of consumers. This difference in target market is likely to influence how buyers perceive these two foldable phones, with some being drawn to the sleek design of one over the other.

As we compare the features and functionality of these two devices, it becomes clear that they have distinct strengths and weaknesses, making it challenging for users to decide which one suits their needs best. In this article, we'll delve into the details of each phone, highlighting their key differences and similarities.

The design choices made by Motorola and Apple for their foldable phones reveal distinct philosophies on how to create a compact device that's easy to carry around. The Motorola Razr Ultra takes on a traditional candybar shape when unfolded, measuring 7 inches diagonally, aiming to be as slim as possible even if it means sacrificing some features on its external screen. In contrast, the iPhone Duo resembles a passport and operates like a regular iPhone when closed, opening up to reveal a 7.6-inch display with a matte finish reminiscent of an iPad.

The Duo's design allows for more functionality, especially in terms of multitasking, as it can enable split-screen capabilities on compatible iPhone apps. This is particularly appealing for users looking to get work done with their foldable device. Meanwhile, the Ultra prioritizes compactness and portability over additional features, making it easier to slip into a pocket or handbag.

In terms of performance, there's not a significant gap between the two devices, despite differences in processing power. The Motorola Razr Ultra is equipped with a fast Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and 16GB of RAM, while Apple's iPhone Duo will likely outperform thanks to its newer A20 Pro chip and iOS optimizations. However, for most apps, users won't notice a substantial difference.

The choice between these two foldable phones ultimately comes down to personal preference regarding design and functionality. While the Motorola Razr Ultra excels in terms of compactness, the iPhone Duo offers more versatility with its ability to multitask and expand its display.

The cameras of both devices have two rear shooters, with one wide and one ultra-wide lens. The Motorola Razr Ultra's rear camera has a slightly higher resolution at 50 megapixels, compared to the iPhone Duo's 48 megapixels. However, the engineering behind Apple's cameras is typically exceptional, often earning top ratings in the industry.

The front camera of the Motorola Razr Ultra boasts a higher resolution at 50 megapixels, whereas the iPhone Duo caps its front camera at 12 megapixels. The Duo also features an under-screen internal camera, but it may not be as effective as the rear sensors available when the phone is unfolded and flipped.

The battery life of both devices has been tested in video-based scenarios, with the Motorola Razr Ultra lasting approximately 31 hours. Apple claims a comparable battery life for the iPhone Duo when using its internal display. In practical terms, both phones should be able to last an entire day in mixed usage.

Regarding durability, both devices feature hardened ceramic glass to protect their exposed front displays. However, the iPhone Duo has a superior IP68 rating for dust and water resistance compared to the Motorola Razr Ultra's IP48 rating. This means that while both phones can withstand short submersion in fresh water, the Ultra may be more vulnerable to dust particles under a millimeter.

The implications of these differences in camera and durability specifications are likely to vary depending on individual usage patterns and preferences. For instance, users who prioritize selfies may prefer the iPhone Duo's rear sensors when unfolded, while those who value ruggedness may opt for the Duo's superior IP68 rating.

The decision between these two foldable devices ultimately comes down to three key factors: price, software, and personal use case. The Motorola Razr Ultra's hefty $1,500 price tag is already a significant barrier for many smartphone shoppers, making the iPhone Duo's even higher price of up to $3,200 seem even more daunting.

For those invested in either iOS or Android ecosystems, there may not be enough incentive to switch to one of these foldables. The iPhone 18 Pro offers a more affordable non-folding option, while Android fans have access to numerous other book-style foldables from manufacturers like Motorola and Samsung.

The variety of options available also means that consumers should consider whether they truly need a foldable device at all. If storage space is the primary concern, it may be wiser to rethink one's bag or pocket accessories rather than splurging on an Ultra.

When considering productivity, pairing a non-folding iPhone with a laptop like the MacBook Neo could potentially offer more functionality while saving money compared to purchasing a Duo.

Ultimately, it seems that these foldables are best suited for those who require specific features and can justify the high price point, but for most users, other options may be more practical and cost-effective.

Engadget: https://www.engadget.com/2277014/apple-iphone-duo-vs-motorola-razr-ultra-how-foldables-compare/

A study published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society analyzed simulated universes to identify safe havens for life to thrive across the universe.

A study of simulated universes has revealed that our cosmic surroundings are relatively peaceful, despite some turbulent events occurring elsewhere in space and time.

The research, published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, aimed to identify safe havens for life to thrive across the universe. The team used supercomputers to generate a vast number of simulated universes, allowing them to analyze various cosmic environments and their potential effects on life.

Our solar system is situated in one of these habitable zones, often referred to as Goldilocks zones. These regions are characterized by conditions that are neither too extreme nor too mild, making them suitable for life to emerge and sustain itself.

The existence of such zones highlights the significance of our location within the Milky Way galaxy. While other areas may pose dangers or be inhospitable to life, our cosmic surroundings appear relatively tranquil compared to these regions.

The concept of habitable zones takes on a new meaning when considering the immediate surroundings of stars. For liquid water to exist, temperatures must be just right, not too hot or too cold. This delicate balance is achieved in what's known as the circumstellar habitable zone.

As we expand our search for life-supporting regions, we look within our own galaxy, the Milky Way. Young stars that are too close to the galactic center face intense competition from nearby stars, while those farther away may lack essential chemicals necessary for life. This balance of proximity and isolation is crucial for a star's habitability.

The sun itself finds itself in a favorable position within the Milky Way, situated in what's referred to as the galactic habitable zone. This suggests that our planet's location is not unique, but rather part of a broader pattern that may be repeated elsewhere in the galaxy.

By zooming out even further, we can explore other galaxies and their potential for supporting life. To achieve this, researchers utilized the EAGLE project, a comprehensive simulation of the universe that models the expansion of space, gravity's influence, and the behavior of gas, stars, and black holes across vast distances.

The ingredients necessary for life are complex and multifaceted. While hydrogen and helium produced during the Big Bang are fundamental elements, they alone do not provide the building blocks for life as we know it. Instead, researchers focus on stars that have seeded the universe with heavier elements essential for life.

Studies of exoplanets suggest that Earth-like rocky planets require a specific concentration of these heavier elements to support life. However, an overabundance of them can lead to the formation of hot Jupiters, gas giants that roam through planetary systems and devour smaller rocky planets in their path. This is a scenario best avoided.

Researchers have turned their attention to modeling the factors that are detrimental to life. Supernovae, massive explosions triggered by the collapse of big stars, can sterilize their surroundings, making them inhospitable to life. Even more catastrophic events, such as gamma-ray bursts, can have a devastating impact on a much larger scale.

Some scientists believe that one such event may have been responsible for the Ordovician mass extinction 450 million years ago. This theory suggests that a nearby explosion triggered by a supernova or other cataclysmic event may have had far-reaching consequences for life on Earth.

A galaxy's neighborhood can also pose risks to life, particularly if it is overcrowded and prone to close encounters between stars. This could disrupt the stability of planetary orbits, making it difficult for life to thrive.

The simulation has revealed that certain regions of the universe are more conducive to supporting life. While it's uncertain whether life would actually emerge in these areas, they do offer the most favorable conditions for its development. These locations have been identified through a thorough analysis of various factors, including cosmic radiation and planetary stability.

The results also suggest that our own galaxy, the Milky Way, is relatively well-suited to support life. This finding isn't solely a reflection of our fondness for our home neighborhood; rather, it's an indication that the conditions in the Milky Way are indeed favorable. The simulation has taken into account various types of galaxies and their potential for supporting life.

The universe appears to have created numerous opportunities for life to thrive. However, there is evidence to suggest that this process may be slowing down as the rate of catastrophic events, such as supernovae explosions, increases. These destructive occurrences can have a devastating impact on planetary development.

In contrast to younger galaxies, which are still going through energetic and tumultuous periods, our Milky Way and similar galaxies seem to have entered a more stable phase. Even after billions of years of existence, the likelihood of an extreme extinction event in our galaxy remains relatively low, with fewer than one star in a thousand experiencing such a catastrophic occurrence.

The likelihood of life existing in smaller galaxies is significantly lower due to their crowded and energetic environments.

These galaxies are vastly more numerous than large ones like the Milky Way, making them a dominant feature of the universe.

In essence, buying property in the Milky Way can be considered a secure investment from an astronomical perspective.

Phys.org: https://phys.org/news/2026-10-life-cosmos-universe-supercomputer-yields.html

Saudi Arabia and its allies have launched a military campaign to reclaim territory near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait from Houthi rebels backed by Iran.

Fighting in Yemen has intensified as Saudi Arabia and its allies launch a military campaign to reclaim territory near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait from Houthi rebels backed by Iran.

The strategic Bab el-Mandeb strait, a critical trade route for oil and other goods, is now the focus of the escalating conflict. The Houthis have responded with missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia, targeting key infrastructure including an Aramco refinery and Saudi military bases.

Houthi forces have also made gains in western Yemen, advancing around a major city that has been a battleground for much of the 12-year civil war. This recent surge in fighting marks some of the worst violence seen in the country in years.

The heightened tensions come as relations between the US and Iran remain strained, with both sides adopting aggressive postures. The US has warned it may resume full-scale military operations against Iran following the November congressional elections.

US President Donald Trump's threat to escalate military action against Iran has contributed to a surge in oil prices, with Brent crude hovering around $100 per barrel on Tuesday compared to roughly $70 before the Iran conflict.

Yemen's conflict has reached new heights as fighting intensifies in the country, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis.

The Houthi rebels have made significant gains, capturing key locations along Yemen's Red Sea coast, including the strategic port city of Mokha and several islands in the Bab el-Mandeb. This development allows them to reinforce their blockade on Saudi shipping, further straining relations between the two nations.

The Bab el-Mandeb Strait plays a vital role in global trade, with approximately 12% of worldwide commerce passing through its narrow waters, including a quarter of all container traffic. The route connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and serves as an alternative passage for oil exports when the Strait of Hormuz is inaccessible.

The escalating conflict has severe implications for regional stability, particularly in light of ongoing US-Iran tensions. The situation remains precarious, with both sides digging in for a long-term struggle that could have far-reaching consequences for global trade and security.

Fighting in Yemen has taken a significant turn as the Saudi-backed coalition seeks to retake control of key areas along the Red Sea coast.

The Houthis' capture of Turbah, a town near Taiz, had given them a strategic foothold for launching further attacks against government forces. Taiz itself has been one of the war's most contested battlegrounds, with both sides fighting fiercely for control.

According to the International Organization for Migration, over 184,000 people have been displaced since August, with nearly 22,000 forced to flee between September 27 and October 3 alone. This represents a significant increase from the previous week, with displacement numbers rising by 26%.

Yemeni officials claim that the Saudi-led coalition has successfully recaptured several key areas around Bab el-Mandeb, including Dhubab, as well as the towns of Bab and Hadeid.

Yemeni rebels have launched a series of counterattacks against Saudi forces in recent days, prompting concerns about the escalating conflict in the region.

Despite these attacks, Saudi officials remain tight-lipped about their military strategy and operations on the ground. However, it has been confirmed that two Saudi airports were targeted by Houthi fighters, resulting in minor injuries to three people and damage to the facilities.

Regional sources indicate that Saudi Arabia believes the Houthis will only return to negotiations if they are subjected to increased military pressure. This assessment is based on internal deliberations within the Saudi government, which have not been publicly disclosed.

The US has provided intelligence support to Saudi forces in their campaign against the Houthi rebels, including sharing information and planning for targeted strikes.

The US has maintained a cautious stance on escalating military involvement in Yemen, despite rising tensions in the region. President Trump's administration has shown reluctance to expand US military operations beyond current levels.

Saudi Arabia is set to receive additional military support from Pakistan and Turkey under a new defense pact, with analysts suggesting that Pakistani combat experience and technological capabilities could bolster Saudi defenses against threats like drones.

ABC News International: https://abcnews.com/International/wireStory/fighting-yemen-escalates-us-iran-tensions-remain-high-137033030

A manuscript for King's debut novel was saved from being thrown away by his wife Tabitha, allowing him to complete the book that would become a horror classic.

Stephen King's debut novel Carrie, published in 1974, has become a classic of modern horror literature, but its fate was almost sealed before it even reached publication. The manuscript was on the verge of being discarded by King himself after he threw the first few pages into the trash.

Fortunately for book lovers everywhere, King's wife Tabitha intervened and salvaged the draft from the garbage, convincing her husband to continue writing. Her timely rescue proved pivotal in shaping the course of literary history.

The initial ideas that sparked Carrie were rooted in real-life experiences, which would later become a recurring theme throughout King's writing career. His personal anecdotes often found their way onto the page, adding authenticity and depth to his stories.

One particular girl from King's elementary school days stands out as a significant influence on the creation of Carrie White, the novel's central character. Her isolation and mistreatment by peers likely left an indelible mark on the author, who drew upon these memories when crafting his protagonist's narrative.

Stephen King's iconic novel "Carrie has been a staple of horror literature for decades, but few know about the real-life inspirations behind its protagonist.

The author himself revealed that he drew from his own experiences and memories when creating Carrie White, a character who was shunned by her peers due to her family's peculiarities and her own personal struggles.

King wrote in an essay that before completing two pages of Carrie, he began to recall the ghosts of two girls from his elementary school days. These girls eventually merged into the complex character of Carrie White, but their individual stories are worth noting.

One of these girls was Tina, who King described as a constant target of bullying and exclusion. She was never chosen in games like musical chairs and wore a KICK ME sign on her back due to her family's eccentricities and her own tendency to stick out.

Tina's story is a poignant reminder that even small acts of cruelty can have lasting effects, particularly when they occur during formative years.

The experiences of Stephen King's classmates during his high school years in Bangor, Maine, had a profound impact on his writing, particularly when it came to creating characters like Carrie White.

One student who stood out was Tina, who was frequently excluded and bullied by her peers. Her story is a stark reminder that even seemingly minor acts of cruelty can have lasting effects on individuals.

King's portrayal of Tina in the opening pages of 'Carrie' was likely influenced by his own observations of her behavior at school. He noted that she often wore the same outfit every day, which may have contributed to her social isolation.

Another classmate who played a significant role in shaping King's writing was Sandra, who lived close to him in Durham, Maine. Her family's home became an unlikely backdrop for one of King's earliest memories.

Sandra's mother hired King to help with moving furniture at some point, and the experience left a lasting impression on him. He remembered being struck by the massive crucifix hanging over the Irving couch in their living room.

The precarious placement of the crucifix was not lost on King, who recalled that if it had fallen while they were watching TV, someone would likely have been seriously injured or even killed.

As King continued writing, he drew inspiration from his own experiences as a janitor at Brunswick High School, where he worked for a short time. It was during this stint that he noticed the distinct features of the girls' bathroom, including pink curtains in the shower area, which starkly contrasted with the boys' bathroom.

The memory of those pink curtains would later resurface and play a significant role in shaping King's narrative. The image of Carrie White being tormented in the gym bathroom after experiencing her first period was born from this recollection.

King's writing process was far from linear, as he often discarded his initial drafts. However, it was Tabitha who stumbled upon these abandoned pages while cleaning their home and decided to give them a read.

Tabitha's intervention proved pivotal in the development of King's novel. She took the time to sit down and review the discarded work, likely offering feedback that helped shape the story into its final form.

The early drafts of Stephen King's novel Carrie reveal a stark contrast between the final product and its initial conception. The author has described how he envisioned the opening scene: girls showering in a locker room without modern amenities like U-rings or pink plastic curtains for privacy.

In this setting, one girl starts to experience her first period, but she's unaware of what it is. Her classmates react with a mix of disgust, horror, and amusement, pelting her with sanitary napkins as she begins to scream amidst the bloodshed. This raw image would later become a pivotal scene in King's novel.

As King pondered this narrative thread, he drew inspiration from an article about telekinesis that he had read in LIFE Magazine. The piece touched on research suggesting that adolescent girls might possess these powers, particularly around the time of their first menstruation.

This concept merged with the haunting image of the shower curtain, ultimately forming the foundation for Carrie. King's writing process began to take shape as he drew upon personal experiences and memories, including one particularly traumatic incident involving a crucifix.

The concept of telekinetic powers merged with the eerie image of a shower curtain to form the foundation for King's iconic novel Carrie". As he started writing, memories of a severely bullied classmate flooded his mind, as well as a traumatic experience where he narrowly escaped harm from a crucifix.

These personal recollections coalesced into the character and story of Carrie White. The pieces fell into place, and King's magnum opus was born.

Mental Floss: https://www.mentalfloss.com/literature/books/real-girls-inspired-stephen-king-carrie?utm_source=RSS

The compulsory hijab has not disappeared in Iran, with authorities finding new ways to enforce compliance.

Women in Iran are increasingly appearing in public without wearing a hijab, marking one of the most visible social changes since the 2022 "Woman, Life, Freedom protests. The protests were sparked by the death of a woman who died in police custody after being arrested for allegedly wearing her headscarf improperly.

Despite the relative retreat of street patrols by the morality police, the compulsory hijab has not disappeared. Authorities are finding new ways to enforce compliance without resorting to the same level of confrontation that fueled the protests.

Judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei has called for action against social abnormalities," "indecency" and "nudity. He urged prosecutors to coordinate with police, intelligence bodies, and government institutions to enforce compliance.

The online campaigns calling for conscious purchasing have sparked debate about their potential impact on social divisions in Iran. The idea behind these campaigns is to encourage consumers to support vendors who adhere to hijab rules, but critics argue that this approach may actually drive a wedge between people.

A female lawyer based in Tehran expressed concern that such initiatives could exacerbate existing social tensions rather than promoting unity around a shared value. She pointed out that by categorizing individuals based on their appearance and imposing economic pressure on them, these campaigns risk undermining the right to choose where one shops.

The lawyer also questioned the assumption that women who wear the hijab are uniquely representative of Iranian societal values. She argued that this perspective oversimplifies the complexity of Iranian society, which is characterized by a rich diversity of cultural norms and practices.

These concerns highlight the challenges of addressing issues related to dress codes in Iran, where the regime has been grappling with declining compliance among women.

As Iranian women continue to defy the hijab rules, reports are emerging that authorities are now targeting them in everyday settings. Women have taken to social media to share their experiences of being denied access to essential services like clinics and banks for not wearing a headscarf.

Shirin Shams, an exiled Iranian activist, believes these campaigns aim to revive the social divisions that were weakened during the Woman, Life, Freedom movement. She argues that the compulsory hijab is a key ideological line for the Iranian state, which has been trying to divide women based on their clothing choices.

The widespread presence of women without headscarves in public spaces suggests that social reality has moved beyond official expectations. This shift has significant implications for the regime's efforts to maintain control over society.

Saeed Paivandi, a French professor, describes the conflict as a broader struggle over social control. He suggests that the issue is not just about clothing but also about the state's attempt to reconstruct boundaries between women who comply with the rules and those who do not.

The Iranian government has been creating divisions among women for years, categorizing them as either properly veiled or badly veiled" or "unveiled". This distinction is not just about clothing but also reflects the state's attempt to enforce strict moral and social codes.

According to Peyvandi, a woman without a headscarf does not represent an individual choice, but rather a challenge to Iran's ideological order. For some conservative figures, she embodies a threat to their authority and the country's values.

The Iranian President has emphasized the importance of national unity and social cohesion, yet conservative voices continue to call for stricter enforcement of dress regulations. This creates tension within the government, with some factions aware that renewed confrontations between police and women could have far-reaching consequences.

As the debate rages on, parts of the establishment seem hesitant to revive large-scale protests, while others are unwilling to tolerate the normalization of women appearing in public without a hijab.

The Iranian government's efforts to enforce compulsory dress rules have shifted from direct coercion to more subtle forms of pressure. This new approach involves using various channels, such as courts, workplaces, and administrative procedures, to encourage compliance.

Supporters of Islamic dress codes are now looking for alternative ways to enforce conformity, with a growing emphasis on social campaigns and personal discretion. As a result, individuals in positions of authority, like bank employees or shopkeepers, may become involved in enforcing standards even without direct government intervention.

This shift has blurred the lines between law, personal choice, and ideological pressure, creating an increasingly complex environment for Iranian women to navigate. The risk is that linking religion to humiliation and exclusion could further alienate younger generations from religious institutions, undermining their sense of belonging.

DW English: https://www.dw.com/en/as-more-iranian-women-reject-hijab-rules-regime-looks-at-new-ways-to-force-compliance/a-79564962?maca=en-rss-en-world-4025-rdf

A federal judge will hear arguments regarding the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was wrongly deported last year by the Trump administration.

A federal judge will hear arguments on Tuesday regarding the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran man who was wrongly deported last year by the Trump administration.

Abrego Garcia's family had been living in Maryland when he was mistakenly sent to El Salvador in March 2025, despite a previous court order from 2019 that prohibited his deportation due to concerns about gang violence in El Salvador.

The judge, Paula Xinis, is being asked to lift her own earlier order blocking Abrego Garcia's removal, which would allow the administration to send him to Liberia, one of several countries where he has been sent as part of his ongoing legal saga.

The Trump administration has been sending deportees from Latin America to Liberia since August, a move that has left many in limbo and feeling stateless. Those who have been sent to Liberia describe being unsure of their status and facing uncertainty about their future.

Many of the deportees have family ties in countries such as Costa Rica, where they have spouses and children waiting for them. They fear persecution if they return to their homelands, which has led some to seek refuge or residency elsewhere.

Abrego Garcia's case is notable because he has designated Costa Rica as his preferred country of removal, and the country has indicated it would provide him with refugee status or residency. However, a Justice Department lawyer previously stated that there had been no discussions about deporting him to Costa Rica.

The government's actions in the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia have been criticized for being unlawful and exploitative. A motion filed by his team in May argued that just as the government overstepped its authority by using criminal powers against him, it is now attempting to misuse its immigration powers.

Abrego Garcia has faced multiple attempts at deportation to different countries, including Uganda, Eswatini, and Ghana, but none of these nations have agreed to accept him. As a result, he remains free from ICE custody while his case continues.

CBS News Politics: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/kilmar-abrego-garcia-hearing-judge-deportation-liberia/

The inauguration of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed marks a worrying turn in the conflict in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region, where fighting between government forces and regional authorities has been ongoing for months.

Ethiopia's conflict in the northern Tigray region has taken a worrying turn as Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was sworn in for another term on Monday afternoon. The event took place amidst escalating tensions in the region, where fighting between government forces and regional authorities has been ongoing for months.

Abiy's inauguration was followed by a statement reaffirming his commitment to granting Ethiopia direct access to the Red Sea. He expressed this intention as "give and take," suggesting that he is willing to negotiate with neighboring countries to achieve this goal. This stance, however, may exacerbate existing tensions with Eritrea, which has long been at odds with Ethiopia over control of Eritrea's port city of Assab.

The implications of Abiy's remarks are significant, given the history of conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea. The two countries have a contentious relationship, particularly when it comes to access to the Red Sea. Ethiopia's desire for direct access to the sea has been a long-standing issue, with Eritrea's port city of Assab being a crucial point of contention.

Abiy's renewed mandate as Prime Minister gives him stronger political authority, but this may not be enough to address the complex challenges facing his government. DW correspondent Solomon Muchie noted that despite Abiy's strengthened position, he will still face significant hurdles in achieving lasting stability and resolving regional disputes. One such challenge is the recent meeting of countries opposed to Ethiopia, which took place in Cairo on Sunday.

The meeting, attended by leaders from Egypt, Eritrea, Somalia, and Sudan, discussed regional issues without inviting Ethiopian representatives. This exclusion serves as a reminder that Abiy's government will face opposition and challenges in its dealings with neighboring countries during his new term.

The conflict in Ethiopia's Tigray region has raised concerns about potential spillover into neighboring countries, particularly Eritrea. Analysts believe that Eritrea is now facing an imminent threat of being drawn into the war.

Eritrea has legitimate concerns about Ethiopia's intentions to occupy its territory and gain control of strategic ports, including Assab. This port is crucial not only for commercial purposes but also due to its strategic location overseeing the Bab el Mandeb Strait, the southern entrance to the Red Sea.

Without access to the port of Assab, Eritrea's significance as a nation would be severely diminished. The port's importance lies in its control over the Bab el Mandeb Strait, which allows for easy passage into the Red Sea and access to international trade routes.

The recent severing of diplomatic ties between Ethiopia and Eritrea, along with Egypt, has sparked concerns that the Ethiopian government is preparing to pursue its goals by force. The renewed fighting in Tigray and the reported mobilization of troops towards the Eritrean border suggest a possible escalation of tensions.

A pro-government media outlet revealed on Monday that the Ethiopian army had begun mobilizing towards the Eritrean border, following the retreat of the Tigray People's Liberation Front to the area near Adigrat, an important gateway to Eritrea and the Red Sea.

The cultural ties between Tigrayans and Eritreans are undeniable, with many shared traditions, languages, and faiths.

This regional connection raises concerns about a potential spillover of the conflict into neighboring Eritrea, which could be exacerbated by the Ethiopian government's rhetoric.

Sayed points out that the current rebel movement in Tigray, the TPLF, may resort to guerrilla warfare tactics if they are forced out of major towns and cities.

The Ethiopian government appears to be waiting for an excuse to draw Eritrea into the conflict, with allegations being made against the Eritrean army without concrete evidence.

Ethiopian officials have been making unsubstantiated claims that the Eritrean military is already engaged in combat within Ethiopia's borders.

The war in Tigray has raised concerns about its potential to spill over into neighboring countries, including Eritrea.

Access to Djibouti may play a crucial role in this scenario, as Ethiopia's main trade route passes through the country. The trade relationship between the two nations is significant, with both sides benefiting from it.

According to Dr. Jalale Getachew Birru, senior East Africa analyst at ACLED, the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) aims to control the main route from Djibouti to Addis Ababa. This would give them leverage over Ethiopia's economy and potentially shift the balance of power in their favor.

The recent recognition by Israel of Somalia's autonomous Somaliland region as an independent state has introduced a new dynamic into diplomatic relations in the Horn of Africa.

Thousands of people have fled from Yemen's war into neighboring Djibouti, where they join thousands more displaced by the ongoing conflict in Ethiopia's Tigray region. The influx has put a strain on local resources and infrastructure.

Djibouti's strategic location at the entrance to the Red Sea makes it a crucial hub for international trade routes, hosting airbases from major players like the US, China, France, Italy, and Japan.

DW English: https://www.dw.com/en/tigray-war-may-spill-over-to-eritrea-helped-by-prime-minister-abiy-ahmed-s-rhetoric/a-79562957?maca=en-rss-en-world-4025-rdf

Nova Sociedade, a riverine community deep inside a protected area of the Amazon, is adopting off-grid solar power to prepare for severe droughts and replace polluting diesel generators.

Remote communities in Brazil's Amazon rainforest are adopting off-grid solar power to prepare for severe droughts and replace polluting diesel generators that have been a costly burden.

Nova Sociedade, a riverine community deep inside a protected area of the Amazon, is one such village where the Arapiuns River serves as its lifeline to the outside world. The river flows into the Tapajos, a major tributary of the Amazon River, creating vast waterways that can be challenging to navigate.

During a historic drought in 2024, Nova Sociedade's residents had to walk up to 20 kilometers to find water, a struggle that began at dawn and involved children and elderly people carrying heavy loads. Tiago Silva, an Indigenous community leader, recalled the hardship faced by his community during that time.

The community is now better equipped to face this year's El Niño drought with the installation of solar panels in June, which power water pumps to fill storage tanks providing clean water for all 36 families in the village.

Nova Sociedade's residents are well aware of the limitations of relying on diesel generators for electricity. The fuel is expensive and polluting, providing limited power that often fails to meet their needs.

The spread of off-grid solar power across the Amazon region has been transformative for communities like Nova Sociedade. By adopting this technology, they can reduce their reliance on diesel and enjoy more reliable access to clean water and electricity in homes, schools, and health centers.

Last month, each household in Nova Sociedade received a solar-power system donated by Schneider Electric through Saude e Alegria. These easy-to-install kits come with batteries that power lights at night and generate enough electricity to charge phones and other small devices.

Community leaders were informed about the benefits of this technology, which harnesses the sun's energy without clearing forests or burning fuel. Caetano Scannavino, an environmentalist and manager of Saude e Alegria, highlighted the importance of sustainable practices in preventing global warming.

The rapid expansion of off-grid solar power in isolated Amazon communities is having a profound impact on daily life.

Official statistics show that the number of off-grid systems installed in remote areas of the Amazon has skyrocketed from 105 in 2020 to more than 11,000 just two years later. By 2026, this figure had surpassed 100,000 installations. This surge in solar power adoption is primarily driven by the increasing use of solar panels.

Fabio Galdino dos Santos, a researcher at the Brazilian nonprofit Institute for Energy and Environment (IEMA), notes that nearly all off-grid systems installed in remote areas are now powered by solar energy. This significant shift towards renewable energy is a testament to its growing viability and effectiveness.

In Brazil's Amazon region, where isolation and high infrastructure costs have hindered electrification efforts, over 1 million people still lack access to electricity. Most of these individuals reside in areas far from urban centers, making it difficult for them to rely on traditional power sources.

Many off-grid communities in the Amazon previously relied on expensive and polluting diesel generators to meet their energy needs. These generators are often unreliable, shutting down shortly after 10 p.m. and failing to provide enough capacity to run essential appliances like refrigerators.

The expansion of solar power in Amazonian communities has led to significant improvements in public services, particularly at healthcare facilities.

At a clinic in Ana, along the Arapiuns River, newly installed solar panels have enabled staff to store vaccines and medical equipment under refrigeration, even during periods of poor air quality caused by wildfires. This is crucial for maintaining the potency of life-saving medications.

The shift to renewable energy has also facilitated telemedicine services at the same clinic. Medical professionals can now conduct remote consultations with patients, improving access to healthcare in these remote areas.

In Surucua, a community along the Tapajos River, the introduction of solar power has brought about a noticeable change in the environment. Gone are the days of noisy diesel generators that dominated the landscape.

The renovation of Sao Benedito School in Surucua has also benefited from the installation of solar panels. Principal Rosenilce Cruz notes that the new system has allowed students to study outdoors without being disrupted by noise from a generator.

The introduction of solar power is having a positive impact on local businesses in neighboring Amazonas state. An acai processing facility in the Bela Conquista community has shifted away from diesel-generated electricity to a new solar-and-battery system.

This change has enabled the facility to increase production and reduce waste, as harvested fruit was previously left to spoil due to constraints imposed by diesel power. The solar-powered system was installed through a partnership between the Foundation for Amazon Sustainability, the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet, and Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy.

The long-term goal of this initiative is to develop 20 pilot projects over the next two to three years, supporting sustainable fishing, agriculture, and fruit-processing businesses in the region. This will help reduce reliance on diesel-generated electricity and promote more environmentally friendly practices.

The Amazon rainforest plays a crucial role in regulating the global climate, storing vast amounts of carbon and influencing temperatures and weather patterns across South America and beyond. Its preservation is essential for maintaining ecosystem balance.

Protecting Indigenous and traditional territories is key to preserving the rainforest, with many areas showing no signs of deforestation. Strengthening these communities could help keep the forest standing, according to engineering professor Lázaro Silva, coordinator of the renewable energy laboratory at the Federal University of Western Para.

Forty solar systems have been installed across 27 remote Amazon communities by Silva and his students since 2022. This effort is part of a broader initiative to help these communities transition away from diesel fuel.

The installation of renewable energy sources in these communities has not only reduced their reliance on diesel but also prepared them for the potential droughts caused by El Niño, which can have devastating effects on the forest ecosystem and its inhabitants.

ABC News International: https://abcnews.com/International/wireStory/solar-power-helps-amazon-communities-ditch-diesel-prepare-137031805

The father of a 3-year-old boy who fell to his death from a hotel window in Cyprus has pleaded guilty to negligence, and is asking for leniency.

A British father has pleaded guilty to negligence in connection with the fatal fall of his 3-year-old son from a hotel window in Cyprus.

The lawyer representing the defendant, Alexandros Alexandrou, made an appeal to a Cypriot judge on Tuesday to avoid imposing a prison sentence on his client.

During mitigation proceedings, Alexandrou emphasized that his client's guilty plea acknowledges a lapse of judgment but does not imply willful negligence. Alexandrou argued that a momentary lapse in judgment was the cause of the tragedy, and that this single mistake would haunt his client for the rest of his life.

The family had been staying at the King Evelthon hotel on July 12 when the incident occurred. The father, who is 38 years old, lifted their son to check out a nearby waterpark visible from the fourth-floor room window before the child slipped and fell 40 feet to his death.

Alexandrou told judge Froso Christodoulidou that the loss of the child was punishment enough for his client and his family.

The court heard that the defendant's memory of the events surrounding the child's fatal fall was hazy due to its brief nature. However, he and his father-in-law had previously informed investigators that they believed the glass window pane was closed at the time of the incident.

The defendant's emotional state was evident as he sat in the dock, frequently wiping away tears while listening to a translator recount the details of the case. His parents, seated in the back of the courtroom, were also visibly distraught, with his mother's eyes red from crying.

In his address to the judge, Alexandrou emphasized that the defense is not seeking to absolve the defendant of responsibility for the incident. Rather, they are urging the court to consider the nature of the mistake made at the time and whether a severe sentence is truly necessary.

The prosecution has argued that justice demands accountability for the boy's tragic death, which resulted in multiple skull and bone fractures, as well as damage to his vital organs. The child was pronounced dead in hospital just hours after falling from the hotel window.

A blood sample taken from the defendant several hours after the incident revealed a level of alcohol consumption below the legal limit at that time. However, experts suggested that his blood alcohol level could have been significantly higher at the time of the fall, potentially exceeding twice the permitted limit.

The lawyer for the defendant argued that his client's alcohol consumption at the time of the incident was irrelevant to the case, as there was no evidence to suggest he was impaired.

The consequences of a prison sentence would be severe for the auditor, who risks losing his job and potentially his license to practice due to disciplinary action and imprisonment. Even if the sentence is suspended, the man's professional reputation could still suffer significantly.

ABC News International: https://abcnews.com/International/wireStory/british-father-asks-cyprus-judge-avoid-prison-after-137032251

A traveler from Congo has died of Ebola in Nairobi, marking Kenya's first imported case of the disease.

Kenyan authorities have confirmed that a traveler from Congo has died of Ebola in Nairobi, marking the country's first imported case of the disease.

The individual, who was a Kenyan citizen, arrived in the country on Saturday via Uganda and was taken to Nairobi Hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, despite efforts to save him, he tested positive for the Ebola virus and passed away late Monday evening.

Health officials have warned that Ebola is highly contagious and can spread rapidly through contact with bodily fluids such as vomit, blood, or semen, as well as contaminated surfaces and materials like bedding and clothing.

This latest development comes amid a growing outbreak in eastern Congo, which was declared in mid-May. According to government data, over 8,400 cases have been recorded, resulting in more than 4,000 deaths - the highest number of cases reported in any single Ebola outbreak.

Kenya's isolation center for American citizens exposed to Ebola has faced opposition from locals who feared it would spread the virus to them. The facility was established with funding from the US government and is designed to provide a safe space for individuals to quarantine for 21 days before returning to the United States.

The current outbreak, declared in eastern Congo in mid-May, has also affected other countries. Uganda reported 20 cases, while France had one confirmed case before Kenya announced its first Ebola patient. It's worth noting that there were no active cases outside of Congo since Uganda declared the end of its own outbreak in late August.

To prevent further spread, Kenyan health authorities have put their border points on high alert and are monitoring for potential additional cases. This move aims to contain the situation and minimize any potential risks to the population.

Health officials have identified 28 contacts of the patient, including family members and healthcare workers who treated him during his illness. Additionally, 23 passengers who traveled on the same flight from Uganda as the infected individual are currently being tracked down for further assessment.

Contacts of the infected individual will undergo a 21-day isolation period to monitor for any signs of Ebola. They will be released once they have tested negative for the virus, according to Patrick Amoth, director of the ministry.

The patient's symptoms were not detected during initial screening at the airport due to his pre-existing treatment status. However, it is unclear what specific condition he was being treated for or how it relates to the Ebola diagnosis.

Kenya has taken proactive measures in recent months by testing 267 samples across five laboratories since May. This effort may have contributed to the early detection of the country's first Ebola case.

In Congo, where the outbreak continues to spread, responders face significant challenges including attacks on health teams and misinformation about the virus. The outbreak is also being hindered by rebel violence that limits access to treatment centers in certain areas.

The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is proving to be a formidable challenge for health officials.

Multiple outbreaks are developing simultaneously in different locations, each with varying intensity, making it difficult for responders to contain the spread of the disease. The situation is being likened to fighting a massive fire that requires concerted efforts from multiple fronts. This complexity has been acknowledged by Stéphanie Hoffmann, a representative of Doctors Without Borders.

The World Health Organization has sounded an alarm, warning that this outbreak could potentially surpass the deadliest Ebola outbreak in history, which occurred over a decade ago and resulted in over 11,000 fatalities in West Africa.

ABC News Health: https://abcnews.com/Health/wireStory/kenya-confirms-ebola-case-imported-congo-after-patient-137025645

Travelers expect a single entity to take responsibility when their plans go awry due to disruptions caused by multiple service providers.

As trips become increasingly fragmented across multiple providers, travelers still expect a single entity to take responsibility when their plans go awry. This growing "accountability gap" poses a significant challenge for travel brands, which must adapt their response strategies to maintain customer loyalty.

The rise of self-directed travel has led to a proliferation of separate services and providers, from airlines and hotels to booking platforms, activities, and ground transportation. While this increased choice and flexibility are major benefits, they also create problems when something goes wrong, as is often the case in today's complex travel landscape.

When disruptions occur, travelers frequently experience them as a single problem that affects their entire trip, rather than a series of separate issues owned by individual providers. For instance, a delayed flight may lead to missed hotel nights, excursions, or family events, causing significant stress and inconvenience for the traveler.

To address this accountability gap, Skift Studio spoke with Anna Kofoed, chief officer at Allianz Partners, about the importance of continuity during disruptions and how technology and human support can be used to mitigate their impact.

Travelers often rely on their preferred brand for assistance when disruptions occur, rather than trying to navigate complex contractual relationships between multiple service providers.

This phenomenon highlights a critical gap in accountability within the travel industry, where customers expect a single point of contact to resolve issues that can arise from even minor delays or cancellations.

When unexpected events trigger a chain reaction, such as a delayed flight leading to missed connections and other complications, travelers typically experience these problems as a unified whole rather than separate incidents managed by individual service providers.

This holistic view creates significant challenges for the industry, which tends to address issues on a segment-by-segment basis, often failing to account for the interconnected nature of modern travel experiences.

The result is that brands with the strongest relationships and most accessible support systems can absorb reputational risks when disruptions occur, but only if they have built the necessary infrastructure to provide timely assistance.

When disruptions occur, travelers often find themselves struggling to piece together solutions from various providers, feeling like everyone is responsible but nobody owns up to the outcome.

The problem isn't that travel brands need to resolve every disruption on their own; rather, they should focus on establishing systems that facilitate support and alleviate the burden on travelers during chaotic situations.

As a result of no single entity taking ownership of the experience, commercial consequences can arise, albeit often in the form of gradual decline. This manifests as decreased repeat business, weakened advocacy, reduced loyalty engagement, or increased churn rates, rather than an immediate financial hit tied directly to disruptions.

Travel leaders are increasingly recognizing disruption as a revenue issue rather than just a service matter. The true test of customer loyalty isn't when everything runs smoothly but when the journey falls apart, making disruptions pivotal moments in the customer lifecycle.

When disruptions occur, travelers need clear information about what's happening and their available options. Brands that excel in this area are not trying to be experts in every type of disruption, but rather connecting assistance, protection, information, and communication.

To achieve this, some brands partner with infrastructure providers like Allianz Partners, which offers travel protection, proactive benefits, medical access, and 24-hour assistance. This partnership model allows the brand to maintain its customer relationship while outsourcing the provision of support services.

Research by Allianz suggests that travelers remember disruptions differently than rewards or positive experiences. Disruptions create uncertainty, causing travelers to question a brand's trustworthiness, responsiveness, and concern for their well-being.

Travelers place significant value on support, protection, and human assistance during difficult moments. They increasingly see protection as a signal of a company's commitment to its customers' welfare.

Travel companies are under pressure to make good on their promises of support during disruptions.

The most impactful uses of AI and automation in disruption management involve removing friction from routine tasks, freeing up human resources for more complex situations that require empathy and expertise.

Automation can efficiently process straightforward claims, monitor flight delays, and trigger benefits without requiring manual intervention. This enables companies to scale their support while maintaining speed and personalization.

However, when disruptions become emotionally charged or complicated, travelers need more than just information, they require expert guidance and reassurance that someone is actively helping them resolve the issue.

To address the fragmentation of support services during disruptions, travel brands must conduct a thorough analysis to identify areas where help is most needed.

This exercise can reveal where customers are struggling to access assistance and pinpoint opportunities for connected support to make a significant impact.

Integrating protection and assistance into existing customer touchpoints such as booking flows or loyalty programs is the next step in closing this accountability gap.

Skift: https://skift.com/2026/10/06/qa-why-travel-brands-need-to-close-the-disruption-accountability-gap/

A pilot for Flydubai had been planning to intentionally crash into Israel's main airport in Tel Aviv, according to a senior official.

A senior official in the Middle East has revealed to our news team that a Flydubai pilot had been planning a catastrophic attack by intentionally crashing into Israel's main airport in Tel Aviv.

The alleged perpetrator, identified as Hamman al-Hammami, told investigators during questioning on Monday that he aimed to evade Israel's defenses and deliberately crash into Ben Gurion Airport or another building. According to the official, al-Hammami expressed this intention while being interrogated by authorities.

Al-Hammami is an Omani citizen, confirmed by multiple sources from three agencies briefed on the investigation and a diplomat in the region who wished to remain anonymous due to their unauthorized status to speak publicly.

He was recently transferred from Saudi Arabia to the United Arab Emirates, where he is currently undergoing questioning by investigators after being involved in a dramatic midair incident last week.

The dramatic midair incident on board a Flydubai flight has revealed disturbing details about the intentions of one of its pilots. According to sources, the pilot had planned a 9/11-style attack, which was fortunately foiled due to his own actions.

During questioning by investigators in the United Arab Emirates, the pilot reportedly revealed that he was attacked while at the controls and suffered severe injuries, including a strong blow to the head. This incident occurred just minutes before he managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers to intervene.

The pilot's actions are being seen as a heroic effort to prevent a catastrophic outcome. It is reported that he made two attempts to open the door before finally succeeding, and his bravery likely saved countless lives on board.

Details of the incident have emerged through phone calls between the pilot and world leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A video of one such call has been released by Netanyahu's office, providing a glimpse into the dramatic events that unfolded in midair.

The investigation into the Flydubai incident has taken a new direction, focusing on potential security lapses that may have contributed to the tragic events. The attention is now centered around how a citizen of Oman was allowed to pilot a plane carrying Israeli passengers to Tel Aviv.

According to Israeli law, airlines must provide detailed information about passengers and crew members, including their names and nationalities, at least 48 hours prior to departure. This requirement was not met in the case of the Flydubai incident, raising questions about how such an individual was able to secure a position as pilot.

The Israeli government has taken steps to review its aviation security procedures following the incident, with Prime Minister Netanyahu instructing the National Security Council to conduct a comprehensive examination of all security aspects related to civil aviation. Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance expressed concerns about potential security failures, stating that individuals who pose a flight risk should not be allowed to pilot aircraft.

NBC News World: https://www.nbcnews.com/world/middle-east/flydubai-pilot-planned-crash-israel-airport-tel-aviv-oman-investigatio-rcna601806

A laboratory worker has died from severe pneumonia at an institute in Russia, sparking speculation on social media about a potential lab leak.

Reports have emerged of a laboratory worker dying from severe pneumonia at an institute in Russia specializing in infectious diseases such as plague.

The incident has sparked widespread speculation on social media platforms, with some users drawing comparisons to the COVID-19 pandemic and others making unsubstantiated claims about the cause of death.

A viral post on X claimed that a lab technician at the Irkutsk Antiplague Research Institute of Siberia and Far East had broken a flask containing the plague virus, resulting in infection and subsequent death. The post included a photo allegedly showing the deceased employee and garnered over 320,000 views before spreading across various social media platforms.

However, independent evidence supporting the claim of a lab leak is lacking, with some questioning the validity of the information shared online.

Russia's public health authority, Rospotrebnadzor, has launched two commissions to investigate biosafety procedures at the institute and found no signs of an accident involving pathogenic microorganisms.

The Irkutsk Antiplague Research Institute's safety protocols have been called into question after a laboratory worker was hospitalized with severe respiratory symptoms. Some experts point to the use of glassware in high-containment laboratories as a potential risk factor for accidents.

Highly pathogenic microorganisms are handled at the institute, including strains classified in Russia's highest pathogenicity groups. These include Yersinia pestis, the bacterium responsible for causing plague. The institute's work with these pathogens raises questions about its laboratory safety procedures.

The biosafety level of the institute's laboratories has not been independently verified by DW. Biosafety levels are an international classification system that describes the containment measures required when handling dangerous pathogens. The most hazardous agents are classified as BSL-4, but it is unclear what level the Irkutsk institute operates at.

DW attempted to contact the Irkutsk Antiplague Research Institute for comment on its laboratory safety procedures and the alleged incident involving the hospitalized worker. However, no response was received by the time of publication.

The World Health Organization (WHO) did update its plague fact sheet around the same time as the hospitalization of the Russian laboratory worker. However, there is currently no evidence to suggest that these two events are linked.

A recent update to the World Health Organization's (WHO) plague fact sheet has been seized upon by social media accounts spreading misinformation about a potential outbreak in Russia.

The WHO's fact sheet was updated on September 29, coinciding with the release of global surveillance data covering 2019 to 2025. This data was published in the latest edition of the Weekly Epidemiological Record, released just four days earlier on September 25.

While the timing of these updates may be seen as suspicious, there is currently no evidence to suggest that they are linked to any real-world events or outbreaks. The previous version of the WHO's plague fact sheet, which was archived in July 2022, provides a more nuanced understanding of the situation.

Social media accounts have been quick to capitalize on the perceived crisis, with some changing their names and profiles to appear as local or specialist sources. One such account, created in May and based in Australia, now claims to be reporting live from Irkutsk, but its profile still indicates a foreign origin.

Old videos are being repurposed on social media platforms, further adding to the disinformation surrounding the plague. A video posted on X features a user claiming that the plague has spread beyond the initial reported area in Russia, with a caption reading "The plague marches across Russia. God has heard our prayers!"

The video circulating online claiming to show a plague outbreak in Irkutsk has been found to be old and unrelated to the current situation. A reverse image search revealed that the video was initially posted on August 31 this year, supposedly showing Kabardino-Balkaria, a tourist destination over 6,000 kilometers away from Irkutsk.

The misleading video has gained significant traction, with more than 1.7 million views on Instagram and also being shared on Telegram. This comes as the Russian news agency TASS reported on August 31 that plague pathogen was detected in local squirrels, prompting the area to be closed to tourists.

A closer examination of the video reveals a specific location mentioned by a person speaking in Russian: "It's at the turnoff from the paved road toward Serebryany Istochnik". This refers to a spring located in the Dzhily-Su area in Kabardino-Balkaria, which is approximately 3,700 miles away from Irkutsk.

The investigation into the situation in the Irkutsk region continues, with no confirmed reports of a plague outbreak in Russia. Precautionary measures have been put in place following the death of a laboratory worker, while tests are reportedly being carried out to determine the cause of the incident.

DW English: https://www.dw.com/en/fact-check-misleading-claims-spark-plague-fears-in-russia/a-79560752?maca=en-rss-en-world-4025-rdf
