# Return to Hometown After Oxford Stint

A couple returns to their hometown after facing challenges finding a suitable home in Oxford.

I made an unexpected decision to return to my hometown after living in Oxford for five years. The catalyst was the search for our first home together as a couple. We wanted to stay in Oxford but faced significant challenges finding a property that fit our budget and met our needs.

A real estate agent's candid assessment of our options forced us to reconsider. When I mentioned our budget, he raised an eyebrow, implying that we were being overly ambitious. He suggested exploring smaller towns outside the city limits if we wanted an off-street parking space within our means.

We had one such town in mind, located just 25 minutes away from Oxford. It was a place where I spent my childhood and still maintained strong ties through regular visits to see my parents. The familiarity of this option made it hard to dismiss outright.

I initially felt uneasy about returning to my hometown, viewing it as a compromise rather than a deliberate choice. My memories of growing up there were marked by boredom and a desire to escape. However, as we began to explore our options more seriously, the advantages of moving back started to outweigh the perceived drawbacks.

As we continued to weigh our options, the idea of raising my own children in a familiar environment gained more appeal. The thought of being close to family and friends was a significant factor in this decision. I wanted to provide a stable and secure upbringing for my kids, which seemed easier to achieve in a place where I already knew the landscape.

Raising my children in our hometown has been a unique experience, to say the least. Everywhere we go, people recognize me from when I was young, creating an odd sense of déjà vu. It's not uncommon for me to see classmates who are now parents themselves dropping off their kids at school, making us feel like we're stuck in some sort of time loop.

The familiarity can be both a blessing and a curse. While it's comforting to know the community and have access to local amenities, I sometimes cringe knowing that people are aware of my past mistakes or what I was like as an awkward teenager. It's a strange feeling, being known so intimately by those who knew me before.

As my kids grew older, some of my initial concerns about being in a smaller town began to fade away. The close-knit community and access to local parks and green spaces have proven to be valuable assets for our family.

As I settled back into my hometown's quiet routine, I couldn't help but think about how much I missed the hustle and bustle of city life. The architecture, services, and atmosphere were all things I had grown accustomed to in my previous life. However, as a parent, my priorities have shifted significantly.

For a time, I considered relocating to a more vibrant area, perhaps the coast or even back to the city where I once lived. But as my children grew older - they're now 7 and 9 years old - I began to appreciate the advantages of being in a small town. Being close to family has proven to be a significant benefit.

Having my parents nearby has made a huge difference, especially since my son's autism requires extra care. Fortunately, living in a tight-knit community means that neighbors are often willing to lend a helping hand with childcare. This support system has been invaluable to me and has greatly reduced the burden of caregiving.

With family close by and friends still living locally, I've been able to maintain strong connections to my past while also enjoying the comforts of small-town life. Knowing the best places to eat, play, and visit is a bonus, but it's the sense of community that truly makes this lifestyle so appealing.

Moving back to my hometown as an adult has allowed me to appreciate its charms in a way I never could as a child.

I've been able to form meaningful connections with people in my community and feel a sense of belonging that wasn't possible when I was younger.

The trade-offs for this sense of community are relatively minor, such as the lack of cultural events and attractions, but being able to easily access public transportation makes it easy to travel elsewhere for entertainment or enrichment.

Living in my hometown as an adult has given me the opportunity to weigh the pros and cons of where I am physically versus where I am in life.
