# Regional Baby Names Vary Greatly Across US States

This year's most popular baby names are not a one-size-fits-all phenomenon, but rather vary significantly depending on where you live. While some names may be trending nationwide, others are exclusive to specific states or regions.

Kehlani has emerged as the top girls' name in Hawaii, despite ranking 87th nationally. In contrast, Anicia takes the top spot in North Dakota, a far cry from its national ranking of 4,079th. Meanwhile, Ella is the most popular girls' name in both Alaska and Alabama, while also boasting an impressive 18th place ranking on the national list.

Regional differences in baby names can be attributed to various influences that vary by community and over time. The naming trend is often cyclical, with classic names making a comeback after being out of favor for a while. This phenomenon suggests that parents draw inspiration from their heritage, traditions, and personal tastes.

Names like Charlotte and Amelia are gaining popularity across the country, but it's interesting to note that they have distinct regional preferences. For instance, Charlotte ranks as the top girl name in 16 states, while Amelia takes the top spot in 11 other states. The influence of celebrities and pop culture on naming trends is also evident, with Olivia possibly being inspired by a well-known cat or fictional character.

The name Noah has experienced a significant surge in popularity over the past few years, ranking first in six states this year. Interestingly, just two generations ago, this Hebrew name meaning "rest, repose" was not even on most parents' radar. Its rise to prominence can be attributed to its medieval European roots and peak popularity in the 19th century.

Waylon has also made a comeback, quadrupling in popularity over the last decade alone and ranking first in five states. This revival is thought to have been influenced by country singer Waylon Jennings, who has contributed significantly to the name's increased recognition.
