# President Trump's Midterm Election Performance Under Scrutiny

Voters' decisions were influenced by several key issues, including President Trump's presence, the economy, and rising gas prices.

A closer examination of the midterms reveals that voters made their decisions based on several key issues. To gain a deeper understanding of these factors, Geoff Bennett and Amna Nawaz spoke with Amy Walter of The Cook Political Report.

Voters were largely swayed by President Trump's presence in the election, as he urged them to treat it as a referendum on his presidency. While this message resonated with some, others saw it as an attempt to distract from more pressing concerns. The economy was a top priority for many voters, who were struggling with soaring gas prices amidst the ongoing conflict in Iran.

The war in Iran and rising gas prices put immense pressure on Americans' wallets, making economic pain a dominant issue during the midterms. As a result, many voters held President Trump and his party, the Republicans, directly responsible for their financial struggles. This sentiment was evident in the way voters cast their ballots, with some seeing it as a referendum on the president's performance.

The extent to which voters blamed the administration for economic woes is perhaps the most significant takeaway from this election. With gas prices continuing to rise and the conflict in Iran showing no signs of abating, it remains to be seen how these factors will shape future elections.

Many Americans who voted in the midterms believe that higher prices are a direct result of President Trump's policies, according to exit poll data. A significant majority, 63%, pointed to Trump's actions as the cause of rising costs.

This perception is not limited to economic issues alone; voters also felt that the president was out of touch with their concerns. In fact, only 36% of those who cast ballots thought Trump had the right priorities for the country.

When asked what they believed the president prioritized, a substantial majority - 62% - responded that he focused on his own agenda rather than theirs. This sentiment is likely to have contributed to voter dissatisfaction with the administration's handling of key issues.

The disconnect between voters' concerns and the president's priorities may be particularly relevant in light of ongoing international tensions, including the conflict in Iran.

The disconnect between voters' concerns and the president's priorities has been evident throughout the midterms. A significant number of citizens expressed dissatisfaction with the country's direction, with a mere 38 percent believing that the nation's interests were being served.

This sentiment was reflected in the way the president campaigned, which some saw as tone-deaf to the electorate's concerns. The president's focus on his own agenda and priorities seemed to overshadow the issues that mattered most to voters, including rising costs and economic uncertainty.

The issue of betrayal played a significant role in shaping voter attitudes towards the president. While not solely driven by frustration over price increases, it was clear that many citizens felt their interests were being neglected in favor of more partisan or ideological pursuits.

A key factor in the Democrats' success was their ability to win over crucial voting blocs that had previously been more closely aligned with Republicans. One notable shift was seen among Latino voters, who had been a significant part of former President Trump's coalition in 2024 but swung decisively towards the Democrats this time around.

In fact, while Harris won Latino voters by only 12 points in 2024, Democrats secured their support by a much wider margin of 30 points. Texas serves as a prime example of this shift, with the state's voting patterns reflecting a broader trend among younger and more diverse communities.
