# Portugal Protests: Thousands Take to Streets Amid Housing Crisis

Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets in major Portuguese cities, including Lisbon and Porto, hours after police dismantled their camps and arrested 55 demonstrators.

The protests are part of a broader campaign against Portugal's worsening housing crisis, which has made it increasingly difficult for people to buy or rent homes. Organizers claim that thousands of people attended rallies in both cities, although official crowd estimates were not provided by the authorities.

In Lisbon, protesters had set up camp in Rossio square since Saturday, with around 200 tents erected on the site. However, police launched a coordinated operation at dawn on Tuesday to clear the camps, seizing 228 camping structures in the process.

Demonstrators in Porto took matters into their own hands and dismantled their own tent camp after being threatened by police, while officers in Lisbon formed a human chain to surround protesters as they cleared Rossio square.

The police response to the housing protests has been met with controversy in Portugal. A senior Public Security Police officer, Sergio Soares, has disputed claims that the eviction of protesters was aggressive, describing it as "calm, proportionate and appropriate" instead.

The police action resulted in 55 arrests, but all those detained were later released on bail pending a court appearance in Lisbon on Wednesday. This move is seen as an attempt to de-escalate tensions and prevent further clashes between law enforcement and protesters.

Portugal's housing affordability crisis continues to worsen, with property prices having more than doubled since 2017. Rents for new leases have also nearly doubled over the same period, making it increasingly difficult for people to find affordable accommodation in major cities like Lisbon and Porto.

The protests against the center-right government's handling of the crisis are gaining momentum, with demonstrators accusing policymakers of failing to address the issue. They are demanding that a proposed bill allowing easier evictions be withdrawn and rent caps on new leases be reinstated.

The protests in Portugal continue unabated, with demonstrators calling for an end to the housing crisis that has left many families struggling to make ends meet. They are demanding that a proposed bill allowing easier evictions be withdrawn and rent caps on new leases be reinstated.

A key factor driving these protests is the desire of young people to build stable lives in Portugal. One protester emphasized the importance of being able to live with dignity, start a family, and contribute to the country's rejuvenation. This goal is not unique to Portugal, as similar sentiments are echoed by protesters in neighboring countries.

Protesters in Spain have been maintaining a tent camp in Madrid since the eviction of Maria del Carmen Abascal from her home sparked widespread outrage. The nearly four weeks of protests in Spain have contributed to significant political turmoil, leading to a snap general election being called for November 29.

The housing crisis is not confined to Portugal or Spain; it has also become a major issue in France, Belgium, and Italy, where people are taking to the streets to demand action from their governments.
