# New iOS Update Introduces Enhanced Parental Controls

Apple's latest iOS update brings significant changes to its parental control features, designed in collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to promote healthy digital habits among children.

Apple's latest iOS update has brought about significant changes to its parental control features, designed in collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to promote healthy digital habits among children.

The revamped parental controls introduce a range of new tools aimed at ensuring kids' online safety and responsible app usage. Among these are Time Allowances, which allow parents to set limits on screen time for their children, as well as Ask to Browse and Ask to Add Contacts features that provide added control over internet access and contact management.

The setup process has also been streamlined, offering age-appropriate app suggestions for new child accounts instead of defaulting to all available apps. This change helps prevent kids from being exposed to potentially mature content or apps that may not be suitable for their age group.

However, it's essential to note that these new features only become active once every device in a Family Sharing group is updated to the latest iOS 27 software. This includes iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, and Apple TVs, all of which must run the same version of their respective operating systems for the Screen Time system to function.

Families with older hardware may find themselves stuck using the outdated iOS 26 controls until they can update all their devices to the latest software.

The latest iteration of iOS brings significant changes to its parental controls, aiming to provide a more tailored and comprehensive approach to managing children's screen time. Gone is App Limits, replaced by Time Allowances - a feature that offers parents greater flexibility in setting daily limits for their kids' phone usage.

With this new system, parents can allocate specific amounts of time for various activities such as social media, entertainment, and gaming within the overall daily limit they set. Furthermore, users can also create custom categories, allowing them to assign separate allowances for each category rather than managing individual app limits.

Another notable addition is Ask to Browse, which gives parents control over Safari activity by requiring approval before a child visits an unapproved website. Parents receive approval requests via Messages, enabling them to review and approve links without needing to navigate through a separate app.

The Communication Safety feature has been enhanced to flag not only nudity but also graphic violence and gore in messages, AirDrop, and FaceTime. Additionally, the new Ask to Add Contacts feature requires kids to get parental permission before calling or texting a new phone number.

Parents can now easily lock their child's device with just one tap using Pause Devices - an instant solution for situations where kids refuse to put down their phones during meals or homework time. These updates collectively make it simpler for parents to set up their child's iPad or other Apple devices.

To manage parental controls on iOS 27, parents must first ensure they have a Family Sharing group set up and that all devices are updated to the latest version. This can be done by heading to Settings > Family on an iPhone.

Once in the Family section, parents can access settings for each child already added to their account. They should review these settings to confirm they align with their preferences, taking note of any new features introduced in iOS 27.

If a parent needs to add a new child to their account, they can tap the Add button at the top-right of the Family section and follow the setup process. The default parental controls vary by age, with certain restrictions enabled automatically for children under 13.

For younger children, parents will find features such as Ask to Browse, Limit Adult Websites, and contact management turned on by default. However, once a child turns 13, these restrictions can be adjusted or removed at the parent's discretion.

By revisiting their settings periodically and consulting age-group guidance from organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics, parents can ensure their children's screen time remains safe and healthy as they grow and develop.
