# Montreal Move a New Chapter in Life for 42-Year-Old Woman

A seasoned travel journalist left her hometown in Connecticut behind to start anew in Montreal, despite having only visited the city briefly over a decade ago.

Leaving behind the comfort of home and family can be daunting for anyone, but for one 42-year-old woman, it was a decision that came with a mix of excitement and trepidation. Last summer, she made the bold move to Montreal from her hometown in Connecticut without a solid plan or a clear understanding of what lay ahead.

As a seasoned travel journalist, she had ventured into unfamiliar territories before - trekking through Nepal to follow snow leopards, immersing herself in Uzbekistan's culture with a local family who didn't speak English, and even having an exclusive meeting with the King of Bhutan. However, this move was different; Montreal was just a 6-hour drive from her hometown, making it seem more like a domestic adventure than a daring escapade.

Despite the relatively short distance, she had barely been to Canada in over a decade and knew only a handful of people there. The initial few days in Montreal were spent exploring the city with her parents, who dropped her off before returning home. During their stay, they discovered that getting around without a car was surprisingly easy - a welcome surprise for someone looking to start anew.

As she settled into her new surroundings, memories from past trips came flooding back. It had been over 12 years since she last visited Montreal's Chinatown with her parents, where she first tried pho in the summer of 2003. Little did she know that this trip would mark the beginning of a new chapter in her life, one that was about to take an unexpected turn thanks to a simple Facebook post on a full moon night in May.

The rent hike was just one of several factors that had been weighing on my mind, making me feel like it was time for a change of scenery. My landlord wanted an additional $500 per month for our spacious apartment in the woods, which would have brought the total to $3,250 monthly, excluding utilities.

During the winter months, those utility bills often soared to around $700 due to the high ceilings, adding insult to injury. It was clear that it was time for me to look elsewhere, and I was about to make a significant investment in a new place by writing a check for $5,985 upfront.

I had just agreed to pay $1,995 per month for a 900-square-foot one-bedroom duplex nearby, as well as purchase a car. But then my Canadian friend shared some exciting news - she knew of an affordable apartment available for rent near Montréal's Little Italy that was perfect for a writer like me.

I've been able to navigate Canada's immigration rules without needing a work permit due to my status as a foreign media worker.

To ensure I was following the correct procedures for staying in the country, I consulted an immigration lawyer who provided me with valuable guidance on the process.

In addition to settling into my new neighborhood and exploring local culture, I've also taken up a new hobby - rowing. I've been attending weekly lessons at the Olympic Basin, where beginner courses cost CA$200 each.

Gliding solo in a scull has become one of the most effective ways for me to manage my anxiety levels, and I'm grateful to have discovered this activity.
