# Marva Cook Charged with Voting Illegally

A New York state woman has been charged with voting illegally, the latest arrest in a crackdown on noncitizen voters ahead of the midterm elections.

Marva Cook, a 66-year-old resident of Syracuse, is accused of casting ballots despite not being a U.S. citizen. According to investigators, Cook had always believed she was born in the United States, having been adopted as a toddler.

Cook's assumption about her citizenship was only recently challenged when she began searching for her biological mother. This search led her to discover that she actually holds a German birth certificate, raising questions about her status as a U.S. citizen.

Federal prosecutors claim Cook had possessed a green card for several years but still participated in recent elections, including the 2022 midterms.

Federal prosecutors have charged a New York state woman with voting illegally, alleging she cast ballots despite not being a U.S. citizen. This misdemeanor offense carries significant penalties, including a maximum one-year prison sentence and fines of up to $100,000 if convicted.

The accused individual has stated that they recently discovered their non-citizenship status, which might explain the alleged voting irregularities. However, federal law also allows for deportation in such cases, adding another layer of potential consequences.

In response to the charges, the woman expressed discomfort with her court appearance, where she was shackled despite having voluntarily turned herself in earlier. She emphasized her commitment to kindness and service, as well as her reliance on community support during this challenging time.

The lawyer representing the accused has declined to discuss further details of the case, citing no upcoming hearings or filing deadlines. Additionally, he mentioned that there are currently no pending immigration proceedings against his client, but an immigration lawyer is on standby in case circumstances change.

Federal agencies have been quick to respond to allegations of voter fraud, despite recent investigations suggesting such instances are extremely rare and do not significantly impact election outcomes.

A statement from First Assistant U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone III has been circulating on social media, claiming that "voter fraud is rampant in New York state. This assertion was made in the context of a case involving a woman who allegedly voted illegally despite being unaware she wasn't a citizen.

The Department of Homeland Security echoed this sentiment in a post on X, stating that they cannot allow noncitizens to undermine the votes of American citizens by casting ballots in elections. The statement included Sarcone's assertion about voter fraud being widespread.

Meanwhile, federal authorities have been taking action against individuals accused of voting or registering to vote illegally. In California, more than two dozen legal permanent residents were charged with these crimes on Monday, while in Minnesota, 10 people faced similar charges just weeks earlier.

The woman at the center of the New York case has received support from her community, where she is remembered as a standout athlete and vital member. The Syracuse University athletics department confirmed that she was the team's leading scorer during the 1979-80 season, averaging 15 points per game and holding the school record for most steals in a single season.

Fred Daley, pastor at All Saints Church, has spoken out in support of a woman accused of voting illegally, describing her as an active member of the parish who has been involved in various community activities.

The church's Easter Bunny for many years, Cook has been a prominent figure in the community during the spring holiday season. Daley believes that if the authorities were looking to make a case against someone, they would have chosen a less exemplary individual. He described her as a poster child of an amazing person who is highly respected throughout the community.

Local resident Dale Avers has also spoken out on Cook's behalf, describing her as a person of service" who has dedicated herself to supporting low-income families and youth through her work at the YMCA's community school program.
