The Philadelphia Eagles' season has taken an unexpected turn with the announcement of Lane Johnson's retirement. This development puts the team's offensive line in a precarious position, particularly at right tackle.

The current projected starters for Week 5 are Jordan Mailata at left tackle, Willie Lampkin at left guard, Drew Kendall at center, Tyler Steen at right guard, and Markel Bell at right tackle. The backup players on the active roster include Fred Johnson at offensive tackle and Micah Morris at offensive guard.

In addition to these players, the Eagles have a number of practice squad members who could potentially contribute to the team's depth at offensive line. This includes Jake Majors, Kiran Amegadjie, and John Ojukwu.

Markel Bell is now in line to start at right tackle again this week, and possibly beyond, following Johnson's retirement. The 29-year-old veteran's absence creates an opportunity for Bell to prove himself in the position.

The Eagles could benefit from having Fred Johnson back on the roster, especially with his experience as a swing tackle behind Mailata and Bell. However, Johnson has been sidelined by a knee injury that has kept him out of the last two games.

The Philadelphia Eagles' lack of tackle depth on their active roster has become a pressing concern following Lane Johnson's retirement. With no other tackles available to step in, the team is likely to promote either Ojukwu or Amegadjie to fill the gap.

The Eagles have two open roster spots due to Johnson's departure and Tank Bigsby being placed on injured reserve. This has created an opportunity for them to make some adjustments to their starting lineup. One possible solution could be moving Tyler Steen from guard to tackle, but this seems unlikely at present.

Meanwhile, the interior offensive line is also facing its own set of challenges. Cam Jurgens is currently in the concussion protocol and may miss at least one game, which would create a vacancy at left guard. His performance out of position has been underwhelming, with Pro Football Focus grading him 77th out of 79 guards this season.

If Jurgens does indeed miss a game, Willie Lampkin will make his first NFL start. Despite being slightly undersized for an NFL lineman, Lampkin has shown promise in training camp and preseason settings. His success in these situations has raised questions about whether he can replicate it on the regular season stage.

Assuming Kendall remains at center, Lampkin would likely take over at left guard. This move could be a temporary solution until Jurgens recovers or another option is found.

With Landon Dickerson currently sidelined due to injury and ineligible for play while on injured reserve, the Eagles are facing a challenge in finding suitable replacements for their struggling offensive line.

Dickerson's expected return from IR as soon as Week 6 is uncertain, as there are doubts about his health and ability to perform at his best upon recovery.

The team may consider signing or elevating veteran guard Casey Majors from the practice squad to bolster interior depth. Majors had previously taken reps with the second-team offensive line during training camp and preseason games.

Majors' inexperience in a regular season game could be a concern, given that he is an undrafted rookie free agent signing for 2025.

Cam Robinson's availability on the market adds to the Eagles' concerns about their offensive line. He is a veteran player who could provide short-term stability to the team. However, signing him might hinder the development of second-year guard Cam Bell.

The Eagles may also consider other external options, such as poaching players from practice squads of other teams. While this approach may not yield an immediate starter, it could lead to discovering some talented players with potential. Taking a chance on these players might be worth exploring.

The team's situation is far from ideal, especially considering their already struggling performance while healthy. Losing Lane Johnson to retirement has further exacerbated the issue. Moreover, Jeff Stoutland's departure as offensive line coach adds to the difficulties in maximizing the remaining talent.

With the Eagles' history of having seasons go awry when their offense line falters, 2026 might be another year to dread for fans.
