# Kosovo Protests Erupt Over Murder of Woman Who Sought Police Help

Thousands have taken to the streets in Kosovo following the brutal murder of a woman who had repeatedly sought assistance from authorities.

Protests have erupted across Kosovo following the brutal murder of a 49-year-old woman who had repeatedly sought assistance from authorities.

Arlinda Zekaj had been reporting her husband to the police on multiple occasions, and it was only after his latest arrest that she asked for additional protection against her in-laws. However, this request fell on deaf ears.

On October 25, Zekaj's husband was arrested once again, but instead of providing her with adequate security, the police drove her back home where her killer was waiting.

The alleged perpetrator, identified as Albert Sylaj, a member of Zekaj's family, fled the scene after committing the crime. When officers arrived at Zekaj's house, they found her brutally murdered in her bedroom with an axe.

Zekaj's murder has sparked widespread outrage and protests across Kosovo, with thousands taking to the streets in a show of solidarity and condemnation of the authorities' handling of her case.

The killing is being seen as particularly egregious due to the fact that Zekaj had been repeatedly seeking help from the police, only to be ignored.

A wave of protests swept across Kosovo following the killing of Arlinda Zekaj. On October 26, a group of feminists gathered outside the government building in Pristina, emptying buckets of red paint onto the steps to draw attention to their cause.

The activists hung a banner at the entrance with a stark message: "The state killed Arlinda." This powerful statement reflected the widespread outrage that had been building since Zekaj's tragic death.

In the days and weeks that followed, thousands of people took to the streets across the country, carrying photographs of murdered women and chanting slogans that held the government responsible for their deaths.

One slogan was particularly striking: "The government has blood on its hands." This demand was echoed by protesters who called for charges to be brought against police officers and prosecutors involved in handling Zekaj's case.

The protection order issued to Zekaj was intended to ensure her safety while still allowing her husband to reside in the same household under certain conditions. Specifically, he was required to maintain a distance of at least two meters from his wife inside their home.

Zekaj had opted against relocating to a women's shelter, instead choosing to stay in her own residence with her son. This decision allowed her to maintain some semblance of normalcy and familiarity despite the ongoing threats from her husband.

Despite the protection order in place, Zekaj continued to report incidents of harassment and intimidation to the authorities. One such incident occurred just three days before her killing, when she alleged that members of her husband's family, including his brother Albert Sylaj, were present in their home against her wishes.

Sylaj allegedly threatened Zekaj with violence during this confrontation, warning her to leave the premises or face dire consequences.

The implementation of measures aimed at protecting vulnerable individuals has been inconsistent and disorganized, argue activists. This lack of coordination among authorities such as police, social services, prosecutors, and courts has allowed violence against women to persist.

Lawyer Njomeza Zejnullahu writes that the repeated failure of institutions to prevent domestic murders is not a breakdown in the system but rather a collapse of the state's and society's response to violence against women. He notes that when the same mistakes are made repeatedly, it is no longer a matter of individual failures but rather a systemic issue.

In the wake of Arlinda Zekaj's murder, several high-ranking police officers from Peja and surrounding areas have been suspended from duty. Additionally, a prosecutor who handled Zekaj's complaints has also been removed from office.

Protesters in Kosovo are demanding more severe consequences for those responsible, including criminal prosecution for failing to carry out their duties. Liridona Sijarina, a political scientist and feminist activist with the Kolektivi Feminist, emphasizes that all individuals involved in the chain of responsibility must be held accountable and removed from office.

The protests that have been unfolding in Kosovo are a stark reminder of the country's deep-seated issues regarding violence against women. According to Liridona Sijarina, a political scientist and feminist activist, those responsible for the chain of events leading up to the woman's death must be held accountable and removed from office.

This includes not only law enforcement officials, prosecutors, and judges but also local government leaders like Mayor Gazmend Muhaxheri and even government ministers. Sijarina believes that creating a dedicated unit within the Interior Ministry focused on preventing femicides would help address women's safety concerns.

The government is being urged to prioritize affordable social housing legislation, ensuring that survivors of domestic violence have access to safe living conditions as part of their recovery process.
