# John Deere Introduces AI Assistant to Help Farmers with Data Analysis

The new tool, JD, is designed to provide farmers with quick answers to complex questions about their fields and crops, saving time that can be spent on daily operations.

Farmers are now faced with an unprecedented amount of data about their fields, equipment, and crops. This deluge of information has become a challenge in itself, as it can take weeks to sift through and make decisions based on it.

To address this issue, John Deere has developed an AI assistant called JD, which is designed to provide farmers with quick answers to complex questions. The tool is integrated into the company's Operations Center platform, where farmers' field and machine data are connected in one place.

Farmers can use their mobile devices to ask JD questions such as when the best time to harvest based on past trends would be or which sprayer covers the most acres per hour. This level of assistance aims to save farmers from spending hours searching for insights within their vast datasets.

JD was introduced by John Deere in September at the Farm Progress Show in Iowa, where the company showcased its capabilities as an innovative tool for farmers.

The agricultural industry is undergoing a significant transformation with the introduction of advanced technologies like generative AI, which is now being integrated into crop management systems.

Farmers have been collecting vast amounts of data for decades, but modern farm equipment has made it even more challenging to keep up with the sheer volume of information. The added stress of navigating tight margins, unpredictable weather, and limited planting windows only exacerbates the issue.

Most farmers lack the expertise in data analysis, a skill that requires specialized knowledge and time-consuming efforts. According to experts, dissecting vast datasets can take weeks, which is a significant burden for those who must balance this task with their daily operations.

The new AI tool, JD, was developed by Deere to alleviate some of these challenges. By providing farmers with the capability to analyze large volumes of data in minutes, JD aims to make it easier for them to make informed decisions about their crops and operations.

Farmers can input data from non-John Deere equipment into Deere's Operations Center, allowing them to access a broader range of information and streamline their decision-making process.

The AI assistant, known as JD, is designed to analyze vast amounts of field data and provide farmers with actionable insights in real-time.

John Deere's Operations Center and JD itself are free for farmers to use, according to Neuendorf.

For those interested in trying out the AI assistant, John Deere offers an early access program, where customers can sign up for a waitlist and be considered for participation.

The company plans to make JD widely available in mid-November, with Neuendorf revealing that so far, feedback from farmers has been overwhelmingly positive.

Farmers who have used JD report being able to quickly query their data through the mobile app, even while driving past fields, allowing them to make informed decisions on the go.

The key to winning over skeptical farmers is not just about providing general advice, but rather offering insights tied to specific field data. Katya Kheistver, chief product and operating officer of OneSoil, emphasizes that farmers will only trust AI if it delivers actionable information that aligns with their existing knowledge.

Farmers often start by cross-checking the outputs of AI systems against their own expertise. If the answers consistently match reality, trust gradually builds up over time. This process is crucial because a single mistake can have far-reaching consequences for crop yields.

The stakes are extremely high for farmers, who typically only get one chance per year to grow a successful crop. To make informed decisions, they need to be able to rely on the accuracy of AI tools. JD's approach sets it apart by combining high-quality datasets with advanced large language models (LLMs), which promises a high degree of precision.

JD is designed to notify farmers when field data is missing, rather than making assumptions or providing false advice. This configuration also encourages farmers to input additional data, enabling the system to derive more insights and provide better decision-making support for future seasons.
