# Iran's Military Capabilities Limited by Geography

US President Donald Trump has made claims that Iran could target and destroy major American cities, specifically Los Angeles and San Diego, sparking concerns about his understanding of the country's military capabilities.

Iran is geographically far from California, approximately 7,500 miles away, which would make it nearly impossible for them to launch a ballistic missile attack on either city. According to the Defense Intelligence Agency, Iran's longest-range missiles have a range of around 1,200 miles, significantly short of reaching Los Angeles or San Diego.

Experts from the nonpartisan Arms Control Association have expressed skepticism about Iran's ability to recover its nuclear program after being damaged by US strikes. While the organization acknowledges that Iran remains a proliferation risk, they do not consider its nuclear program an imminent threat.

Iran's conventional missile arsenal is capable of targeting US troops and infrastructure across the Middle East, as demonstrated by strikes during Operation Epic Fury in March that resulted in six troop casualties in Kuwait and significant damage to military facilities throughout the region.

These regional strike capabilities, however, do not extend to long-range attacks on targets outside the Middle East. The Iranian military's conventional systems are not equipped with nuclear warheads, and their reach is limited by geography.

The US has taken action against Iran's nuclear program, conducting two strikes on uranium-enrichment facilities since last May, including at the outset of Operation Epic Fury. Prior to these strikes, Iran was progressing towards the ability to produce a nuclear weapon, but had not yet reached that milestone.

Experts warn that even if military strikes were to destroy existing nuclear capabilities, Iran's knowledge and expertise in this area would remain intact, allowing them to potentially reconstitute their program at some point in the future.

The threat of nuclear escalation between Iran and its adversaries is a delicate one, experts warn. The possibility of mutually-assured destruction, where both sides retaliate with nuclear force, can create an escalatory spiral that states may not be willing to initiate.

This scenario has not played out in recent history since World War II, largely due to the devastating consequences of using such weapons. As a result, countries have instead opted for conventional attacks against their adversaries without crossing the nuclear threshold.

Examples include Israel, the US, and Russia, all of which are nuclear powers that have engaged in military actions against other nations without resorting to nuclear force. Similarly, Iran has employed asymmetric tactics, such as cyberattacks, to target its enemies, including the United States and its allies.
