# Instagram Expands Video Content Capabilities

Instagram is expanding its capabilities to accommodate longer-form content, allowing creators to upload videos up to 90 minutes in length.

Instagram has begun to blur the lines between short-form video content and traditional television programming. The platform's algorithm recently presented users with clips from a podcast featuring a couple sharing humorous anecdotes about the healthcare system. This brief taste of entertainment was made available to millions of viewers, sparking curiosity but not encouraging them to seek out the full episodes on other platforms.

However, Instagram is now expanding its capabilities to accommodate longer-form content, allowing creators to upload videos up to 90 minutes in length. Additionally, users will be able to rotate videos from portrait to landscape orientation, making it easier to watch content on larger screens.

This shift towards longer-form video content is part of a broader effort by the platform to become "the best place for social entertainment." According to Tessa Lyons, vice president of product at Instagram, this move acknowledges that engaging stories and creative ideas can't be confined within a three-minute time frame.

Instagram is enhancing its creator tools to enable seamless transitions between Reels, allowing users to easily switch from one episode to the next. This feature, called "Series," is already being tested by some creators within the app and also for TV viewing.

The company's focus on creating a seamless video-watching experience extends beyond mobile devices. Instagram aims to make its content more suitable for TV viewing, with plans to integrate features that allow users to show their friends what they're watching via the Friends tab.

As part of this effort, Instagram is exploring ways to convert smartphones into makeshift remote controls. This would enable users to navigate and control video playback on their TVs directly from their mobile devices.

Instagram's latest updates are not just about short-form video clips; they're also positioning the platform as a centralized hub for content consumption.

The rise of bite-sized videos has become ubiquitous on social media, with many creators using them to increase their visibility and engagement. This trend is evident in the proliferation of podcast microphones as props in these short clips, which often feature two individuals discussing various topics.

To integrate long-form content seamlessly into its platform, Instagram is streamlining a user's experience. Instead of having viral clips on one platform and longer-form content on another, users can now discover short clips and easily transition to watching the full episode later that night.

The challenge for Instagram lies in balancing the design requirements of both vertical and horizontal formats within a single product, according to Lyons.
