# Hyrox Endurance Racer Completes 21 Races Across 11 Cities Worldwide

Lau Wen Loong has competed in numerous Hyrox endurance races globally since starting two years ago.

A seasoned athlete has shared his experiences of competing in 21 Hyrox endurance races across 11 cities worldwide over the past two years.

The Hyrox format combines running with fitness stations, allowing participants to choose from individual, doubles, or relay racing options and catering to both amateur and professional athletes. This unique blend of physical activities has proven appealing to Lau Wen Loong's friend, who initially invited him to join a race in Singapore last year. However, his friend ended up participating alongside his wife, prompting Lau to take on the challenge solo.

Lau, 37, had not previously been involved in endurance racing, having instead focused on cross-country running during his high school days. Despite this lack of experience, he signed up for a Hyrox event six weeks prior to the start date and went on to complete it in Singapore last August with a personal best time of under 73 minutes. This accomplishment marked a significant milestone for Lau, who had never before participated in a similar event.

Lau's first Hyrox experience was a defining moment that left him questioning his motivations and goals as an athlete. Having put considerable effort into training for the initial race, he felt compelled to continue pushing himself to maintain momentum and explore further opportunities in the sport.

I've competed in numerous Hyrox races globally since starting two years ago, with a total of 21 events under my belt across 11 cities. The experience has been nothing short of exhilarating, and I'm eager to see what the future holds.

As it stands, I have seven more races lined up for this year, which will keep me busy and on track with my fitness goals. To give you an idea of the costs involved, each race itself comes in at around $150, while flights and other expenses can add up to a significant amount, approximately $1,500.

My current situation has given me the flexibility to focus on my passion for Hyrox, as I'm between jobs at the moment. This break also provides an opportunity for me to work on an AI startup with my brother, which is an exciting venture in its own right. To prepare for upcoming races, I've recently invested in a yearlong gym membership in Seoul, where I reside, for about $55 per month.

This investment will undoubtedly help me stay on top of my game as I continue to push myself to new heights. As it turns out, being an ambassador for several Hyrox-related brands also helps cover some of the costs associated with participating in these events.

The unique winter setup of some Hyrox events requires runners to navigate between two halls within a small venue. This configuration adds an element of excitement to the competition as athletes must switch between running and working out in different areas.

One such event took place in Osaka, where I spent seven days immersed in the surrounding area. During this time, I managed to squeeze in some shopping in the vibrant Dotonbori district, known for its lively atmosphere and eclectic shops. A highlight of my stay was a dinner date with my father at a renowned crab restaurant.

In addition to experiencing the local culture, I also had the opportunity to watch my friend compete in his first Hyrox event. Witnessing him take on the challenge gave me a fresh perspective on the competition. Furthermore, my own performance was impressive, as I achieved a personal best and secured first place in my age group.

The Incheon edition of Hyrox, held within a major convention center, offered a distinct experience compared to other events. The layout allowed for a seamless flow, minimizing disruptions that can affect an athlete's rhythm. As someone based in Seoul, I was able to commute daily to the venue, making it easy to participate in this event.

The daily commute to the race venue was a mere one hour each way, making it an ideal location for participants like myself who were based in Seoul.

During my time at the event, I had the opportunity to explore the hyugaeso, or rest stops along the highway, which proved to be a welcome respite from the action on the track. These mini shopping malls offered a wide range of amenities and services, including multiple floors of stalls selling everything from food and drinks to souvenirs.

As I've participated in numerous Hyrox races around the world, I've had the chance to form lasting connections with fellow competitors. One such friend is Ian, my doubles partner, while another notable acquaintance is Yvonne, a Singaporean working mom who has completed an impressive 55 races.

The picturesque setting of the convention center in Jakarta's green spaces made for a stunning backdrop to the event. It was also notable that this was the very first Hyrox race held in Indonesia, making it a unique experience for everyone involved.

The Hyrox race in Beijing was particularly memorable due to an unfortunate incident involving Joanna Wietrzyk, who soiled herself during one of the events. This unexpected turn of events left a lasting impression on observers, including those competing in separate races.

Reflecting on such incidents, it's clear that participating in Hyrox can be emotionally demanding for athletes. Many competitors have been seen crying at these events, whether from joy or frustration. In fact, the experience is often likened to therapy, as participants work through physical challenges and develop greater self-awareness.

Despite the physical and emotional toll of competing in Hyrox, many athletes continue to participate year after year. One such athlete has expressed a commitment to racing for at least another year, citing the benefits of increased self-awareness as a major draw.
