The Samsung S95H offers exceptional picture quality and advanced AI processing capabilities in a remarkably straightforward setup process.

A new flagship OLED TV has been released by Samsung, the S95H, which promises exceptional picture quality and advanced AI processing capabilities.

The setup process for this TV is remarkably straightforward, requiring no additional hardware or breakout boxes to get started. This ease of use is a welcome feature in an era where home entertainment systems are becoming increasingly complex.

One of the standout features of the Samsung S95H is its incredibly accurate color reproduction, paired with deep and rich blacks that bring out the full depth of any visual content. The AI Optimized picture mode also enhances color quality and contrast, making for a truly immersive viewing experience.

However, some tests have revealed a notable limitation in the TV's ability to capture subtle skin tones, often resulting in less variation than what is seen on RGB models.

In addition to its technical prowess, the S95H has undergone a design overhaul, with a sleek new silver bezel that adds a touch of sophistication to any living room. This cosmetic update gives the TV a more premium look and feel.

The revised design may be more to some people's taste than others, but it is undeniable that the new bezel has generated significant interest among consumers.

The S95H marks an important milestone in the evolution of OLED technology, but it faces stiff competition from newer RGB models and art TVs that are pushing the boundaries of what is possible with television displays.

The Samsung S95H OLED TV has undergone some design changes that affect its connectivity options. Gone is the One Connect breakout box, which was previously included in the package but can now be bought separately if desired. This change means users must connect their external devices directly to the television, a setup that may seem more straightforward without the additional device.

While this shift does make the S95H slightly thicker than its predecessor at 1.04 inches compared to 0.4 inches for the S95F, it has some advantages in terms of convenience. Without the One Connect box, there's one less device to set up and manage, which can simplify the overall viewing experience.

The S95H features a more traditional array of ports on its right side, including four HDMI connections. These are supplemented by an Ethernet jack for wired internet connectivity, optical audio out for surround sound, two USB ports for playing files from external storage drives, and a headphone jack. The TV also supports the latest Wi-Fi 6E standard for faster speeds and improved compatibility.

The S95H's design allows it to be mounted flush to a wall, much like its predecessor. However, I opted to use the included pedestal stand during testing, which attached easily to the back of the television. This stand provides a stable base for the TV while also allowing for some flexibility in terms of placement.

The user interface on the S95H is powered by Tizen OS, an operating system that has its fans but can be confusing for those unfamiliar with it. While I have experience with Tizen and was able to navigate the setup process without issue, others may find it more challenging than models running other interfaces like Google TV.

One aspect of the S95H's design that I particularly appreciate is its remote control. Uncluttered and easy to use, it provides access to essential functions like channel selection, mute, and volume control, along with a few app shortcuts for popular services like Netflix.

The Samsung remote stands in contrast to some other models on the market, such as those from Hisense, which often feature an overwhelming number of buttons. In my experience, most users can get by with a more streamlined approach to remotes, focusing on essential functions and key app shortcuts.

The color accuracy of the Samsung S95H OLED TV has been put to the test in rigorous real-world evaluation, revealing its capabilities compared to other flagship models.

Measuring up against the competition, the S95H delivers excellent color quality across various scenes and content types, but falls short in specific instances. The market for high-end TVs is increasingly saturated with top-notch options, making it no longer a straightforward choice to opt for Samsung's latest flagship model.

A particularly demanding test case was the movie Awake, which features numerous dark scenes that often challenge even the most advanced TVs. Despite some initial struggles, the S95H ultimately performed well in these scenes, although requiring adjustments to achieve optimal results.

The AI Optimized picture mode proved instrumental in enhancing color and clarity in several key scenes from Awake, outshining its predecessor, the Samsung Micro RGB R95H, in certain instances. This feature not only improved overall image quality but also demonstrated the S95H's ability to showcase contrast and depth simultaneously.

A similar success story unfolded with The Creator, where AI Optimized helped reveal a wealth of texture details in a dark scene featuring cliffs that would otherwise appear dull on some OLED and RGB TVs.

This performance suggests that the S95H's OLED technology is capable of delivering high-quality visuals, including deep blacks, contrast, and clarity.

The Samsung S95H OLED TV has proven itself to be a capable performer when it comes to color representation. A scene from The End of Oak Street showcased people wearing brightly colored shirts without any noticeable color blooming or bleeding.

In contrast, the Super Mario Galaxy Movie is often used as a benchmark for color bloom testing, and the S95H exceeded expectations in this regard. Interestingly, the TV's Filmmaker picture mode, which can sometimes make movies appear too dark, actually corrected for color bloom issues in the Galaxy movie.

The OLED technology in the S95H also excelled when rendering darker scenes with complex colors. A particularly challenging scene from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 showcased a dark uniform with excellent shadow detail, demonstrating the TV's ability to handle nuanced color gradations.

One notable aspect of OLED technology is its ability to render blacks and grays with exceptional depth and clarity by adjusting or turning off individual pixels as needed. This feature was evident in a scene from Game of Thrones where an army at night was depicted with good results when using AI Optimized mode, but would otherwise appear too dark.

A skin tone test revealed some minor issues with the S95H's color accuracy, particularly in scenes featuring multiple people. In one instance, there wasn't enough variance in color between individuals to make them easily distinguishable from one another.

The TV also exhibited some minor flaws when rendering certain nature scenes, such as a demo reel showcasing various outdoor environments. For example, grass appeared slightly less vibrant and detailed compared to the LG Micro RGB Evo in one scene near a fence, while dark trees in a forest scene still retained plenty of shadow detail.

When viewing a benchmark demo, it's clear that OLED technology has an edge over RGB in rendering blacks and grays regardless of the content being displayed.

OLED's color capabilities are also on par with those of RGB, as evidenced by a scene featuring a yellow flower and a red cactus that appeared brighter than any RGB model I've tested.

In particular, a 4K Ultra playback of Blade Runner 2049 showcased yellows and reds in one scene that looked hyper-realistic, almost like you could reach out and peel the color off the screen.

On other RGB models from Sony, Hisense, and even Samsung, colors were not as sharp or vibrant as those on the S95H OLED TV.

Moving to gaming tests, I was impressed by the picture quality, refresh rate, and sound of the S95H. A library scene in Resident Evil Requiem lacked texture and detail compared to some RGB models and projectors I've tested.

However, when playing Red Dead Redemption 2 at 165 Hz, the S95H looked crisp and felt responsive, especially during a lakeside horse ride scene that showcased incredible detail on the main character's face.

In other gaming tests, such as playtesting Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II on an Xbox Series X with AI Optimized picture mode enabled, the main character's face appeared a bit dark.

The anti-glare technology on the Samsung S95H OLED TV is effective in reducing glare, but it's not a standout feature compared to other TVs from the same brand.

Viewing artwork on this model is a treat, thanks to its OLED display and anti-glare screen. However, accessing most paintings requires a $5 monthly subscription to the Samsung Art Store. It's worth noting that the Samsung The Frame Pro 2026 still offers better art viewing capabilities.

The S95H is an exceptional TV with impressive picture quality features, including deep blacks, excellent contrast, accurate color, and AI Optimized mode. However, its performance in certain tests lags behind some of its competitors, particularly high-end RGB models like the LG Micro RGB Evo.

Despite this, the Samsung S95H stands out as a top-tier television option in many real-world tests, albeit slightly less capable than some other options available in the market today.

Wired: https://www.wired.com/review/samsung-s95h/

The value of older Samsung smartphones has been revealed to be surprisingly variable, depending on whether you opt for a quick cash offer or try to sell it privately.

The value of older Samsung smartphones has been revealed to be surprisingly variable, depending on whether you opt for a quick cash offer or try to sell it privately.

A like-new 256GB Galaxy S23 Ultra model, released in February 2023 at a price of $1,199.99, can fetch around $291 from a buyback site and an average sale price of $404 on Swappa by October 23, 2026. This leaves a gap of $113 before fees for those willing to handle the sale process themselves.

There are three main ways to get cash for your old phone: selling to a buyback site, trading it in with Samsung, or directly selling to another consumer. Buyback sites and trading in offer convenience, providing online quotes and prepaid shipping labels, but come with lower payouts since they need to make a profit.

The convenience factor seems to come at a cost, as direct sales often yield more money, but involve dealing with logistics such as taking photos and shipping the device.

As Samsung's latest flagships continue to rise in price - the Galaxy S26 Ultra now starts at $1,399.99 in the US - buying used may become an increasingly attractive option for those on a budget.

The prices of older Samsung phones have been declining steadily as newer models emerge. Despite its advanced features and high-end storage capacity, the Galaxy S20 Ultra (128GB) can now be sold for a top cash offer of $136. This is quite surprising, considering it has half the storage of newer models like the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Interestingly, even though the prices of used phones have dropped significantly, there are still some buyers looking to purchase these devices at decent prices. The Galaxy Z Fold6 (256GB), which was initially priced at $1,900 in 2024, is now being quoted at a top cash offer of $512. This represents a substantial decrease from its original price.

The Galaxy Z Flip6 (256GB) has also seen its price drop to $278. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S21 Ultra (256GB) can be sold for a top cash offer of $136. These prices are not guaranteed payouts but rather the highest offers available through various online marketplaces and comparison websites.

Selling directly to an individual through platforms like Swappa can yield better results than trading in with a company or selling through a marketplace. According to October pricing data from Swappa, the Galaxy S24 Ultra averaged $600, while the Z Fold6 averaged $657. However, it is unclear what time frame these averages are based on.

When considering the resale value of an older Samsung Galaxy model, it's essential to factor in software support. The S24 series is designed to receive seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates, which should extend into early 2031.

This level of support contrasts with previous models like the S23 series, which are expected to continue receiving security patches until early 2028. Meanwhile, the S22 series will likely receive quarterly security patches until the end of 2027, even though it has already been updated to its final major Android version.

For those looking to sell their used Samsung phone, several platforms offer varying options for determining a device's worth. SellCell allows users to compare cash offers from multiple sellers, while Back Market provides quotes from refurbishers and pays directly into the seller's bank account after inspection.

Back Market also sells refurbished Galaxy phones at significantly lower prices than what buyers are willing to pay for used devices. For those willing to handle the process themselves, Swappa enables direct sales to buyers, but comes with a three percent seller fee plus payment processing fees that reduce the payout.

Samsung's trade-in program offers credits towards a new device instead of cash, and the amount depends on what you're buying and any active promotions at checkout. This means that if you're purchasing a specific model or taking advantage of a particular offer, the credit value may be higher than usual.

The company also partners with Likewize to provide an alternative trade-in option, which issues prepaid digital gift cards rather than direct bank transfers. The promotional credits offered by Samsung can vary significantly over time, as seen in the example of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, which was valued at $500 during preorders for the Galaxy S26 Ultra but dropped to $130 once it became available on March 11.

Engadget: https://www.engadget.com/2295544/older-samsung-phones-how-much-actually-worth/

The latest ratings from Nielsen's The Gauge have revealed YouTube has taken the top spot as the most-watched streaming platform on TV, with a 14.2 percent share of US television viewing time.

The latest ratings from Nielsen's The Gauge have revealed a surprise in the world of American television viewing: YouTube has taken the top spot as the most-watched streaming platform on TV.

According to Nielsen's data for July 2026, YouTube accounted for a significant 14.2 percent share of US television viewing time, more than double that of Netflix at 7.8 percent. This unexpected shift has seen other popular streaming platforms fall behind in the rankings, with The Roku Channel outperforming Peacock and Tubi beating Warner Bros. Discovery's services.

The data from Nielsen specifically tracks TV viewing time, not subscriber numbers or app downloads, which is an important distinction to make when considering these results. This means that the numbers only account for time spent watching streaming content on a television set, rather than on mobile devices or other platforms.

The fact that YouTube has emerged as the leader in this metric is particularly notable given its focus on individual creators and user-generated content. It's also worth noting that live channels watched via YouTube TV are counted towards broadcast or cable viewing, which helps to prevent inflated numbers for the platform.

The viewing share of streaming platforms in the US has been revealed for July 2026, showing that Disney's services are leading the pack. The company's trio of streaming platforms - Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ - took home a significant 4.7 percent of the total viewing share. This is followed closely by Amazon's Prime Video at 4.2 percent.

Roku's own streaming service, The Roku Channel, managed to secure fifth place with a 2.9 percent share, edging out NBCUniversal's Peacock at 2.6 percent. Paramount's services, including its flagship platform Paramount+ and Pluto TV, accounted for 2.2 percent of the viewing share, while Tubi secured 2 percent. Warner Bros. Discovery's services, which include HBO Max and discovery+, trailed behind with a 1.4 percent share.

These numbers are significant because they show that even though Disney is leading the pack, there is still a diverse range of streaming platforms vying for viewers' attention in the US market. The fact that Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery have several services grouped together may also be influencing their combined viewing shares.

The Roku Channel and Tubi offer free streaming options to users, with ads being the main trade-off. This has proven to be a popular choice among viewers, who can access live channels, shows and movies without having to pay for a subscription. However, some viewers have expressed concerns about the potential increase in advertising on these platforms.

It's worth noting that The Roku Channel is available not only through Roku devices but also on compatible Samsung and Fire TV devices, as well as in a browser. This flexibility has contributed to its popularity among users who want to access free content without having to commit to a specific device or platform.

YouTube's streaming capabilities have seen significant growth in recent years, with over 700 million hours of podcasts watched on living-room devices in October 2025. This figure represents a substantial increase from the 400 million hours recorded just a year earlier.

The flexibility and variety offered by YouTube has allowed it to thrive as a popular streaming platform. In addition to its free ad-supported content, users can also rent or buy movies, subscribe to YouTube Premium, or pay for individual creator memberships. Meanwhile, other major players in the market such as Netflix and Prime Video offer different business models, with Netflix relying on recurring plans and Prime Video offering rentals and add-on channel subscriptions.

Engadget: https://www.engadget.com/2295216/most-popular-streaming-platforms-united-states-not-what-you-think/

Instagram will introduce new tools for creators who produce episodic content and allow longer-form videos up to 90 minutes long.

Instagram is set to introduce a range of changes that will see it move closer to rival video-sharing platform YouTube. According to Adam Mosseri, Instagram's top executive, the aim is to make the app more culturally relevant and competitive with its larger counterpart.

The company is testing new tools for creators who produce episodic content, such as serialized shows or series. These features are designed to encourage users to stay on Instagram rather than migrating to YouTube. The move is seen as a response to the growing popularity of YouTube among TV viewers.

A prime example of this trend can be seen in "Subway Takes, a show hosted by Kareem Rahma that started life as a short-form interview series before expanding into longer-form content on both YouTube and Tubi. With 4 million followers, it's clear that Instagram has the potential to host more substantial shows.

The company is now looking to entice creators to produce their own long-form content within its platform, rather than relying on rival sites for ad revenue and user engagement. Whether this strategy will pay off remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Instagram is trying to catch up with YouTube's impressive reach and influence.

Instagram has introduced new features aimed at keeping users engaged within its ecosystem, rather than leaving to watch longer-form content on other platforms.

The Features format allows creators to produce videos up to 90 minutes long, which can be viewed seamlessly without requiring a departure from the app. Currently, this option is available only to a limited number of creators in the US and Brazil. This development suggests Instagram's desire to provide users with more substantial content within its own platform.

In addition to these changes, Instagram is also expanding its reach through TV apps. The Instagram for TV" app will now be available on Apple TV, joining other platforms such as Samsung, Amazon Fire TV, Google TV. Users can access a feed of video content from friends they follow or have interacted with.

The main Instagram feed is being tested to seamlessly connect episodic content within the Series format. Eligible creators can add videos to a series and label them accordingly; users can then watch these episodes in order from the start.

Instagram's long-form video experiment is expanding to more countries by the end of this year, offering creators a new way to showcase their content.

One notable feature of this test is the ability for clips to drive engagement directly back to the original video, eliminating the need for users to search for the longer version. This streamlined approach allows creators to reach their audience more efficiently. The test also enables eligible creators to link up to eight clips to a single long-form video.

This move marks a significant shift in Instagram's offerings, as it continues to evolve and compete with other social media platforms like YouTube. While this isn't the first time Instagram has ventured into long-form content, it is a major leap forward for the platform.

The absence of some key features in this new format is notable, including the inability to watch videos while continuing to scroll through Instagram or multitask by opening other apps with the content visible in a picture-in-picture pop-up. However, Meta has confirmed plans to introduce automated transcripts and subtitles in the future.

Instagram is exploring ways to test pre-roll and mid-roll ads that could potentially result in creators receiving a share of the ad revenue.

This development comes as Instagram continues to grapple with how to effectively monetize its content creator community, a challenge it has faced in the past. According to Adam Mosseri, the platform's head, previous attempts at creating a broad revenue-sharing program were not profitable for Instagram. In fact, he stated that the company spent more on such initiatives than they generated in return.

The introduction of ads is seen as a way to incentivize creators to produce higher-quality content and potentially increase engagement. However, Mosseri acknowledged that past experiments with creator monetization programs had yielded disappointing results. He noted that when Instagram previously offered incentives for creating content, the output was not significantly greater than what creators were already producing voluntarily.

Ultimately, Instagram will need to find a solution that balances its own financial needs with the desire of creators to be fairly compensated for their work.

Business Insider: https://www.businessinsider.com/instagram-doubling-down-long-form-video-culturally-relevant-episode-tv-2026-10

Reports are emerging of iPhone Duo models experiencing screen cracks when customers open their devices for the first time, with some users encountering the issue during initial setup.

Reports are emerging of iPhone Duo models experiencing screen cracks when customers open their devices for the first time. According to multiple accounts on Reddit, some users have encountered this issue during the initial setup process. The extent of the problem is currently unclear.

The issue is not unprecedented in the world of foldable phones. The hinge mechanism, which allows the device to fold and unfold, can put strain on the screen and internal components. This can also create an entry point for dust, which can cause damage over time.

One notable example is Samsung's original Galaxy Fold, released in 2019, which suffered from a similar issue that led to a pause in sales. Since then, manufacturers have made improvements to address these problems. However, the complexity of foldable designs still presents challenges for repair and maintenance.

Repair company iFixit has conducted a teardown of the iPhone Duo, providing insight into its internal components. The analysis includes a video detailing the phone's inner workings and potential areas where issues may arise. The report also assigns a provisional repairability rating of 5/10 to the device.

The iPhone Duo's repairability has been assessed by iFixit, a firm known for its teardowns of consumer electronics. The device received a provisional repairability rating of 5/10, which is notable given that it is the highest rating any foldable phone has achieved so far.

iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens noted that creating foldable devices presents significant engineering challenges, combining expertise in materials science and multiple disciplines. He described this as one of the most complex tasks in the industry today.

Despite some areas where the iPhone Duo excels, there are still difficulties with disassembling certain components. One such issue lies with the inner display, which features a thin nano-texture finish that can easily be damaged if not handled carefully.

Removing the full inner screen requires specialized tools and techniques, including applying heat to break down the adhesive holding it in place. Users have reportedly broken this component during repair attempts, highlighting its fragility and difficulty in replacement.

The inner hinge of the iPhone Duo has been found to accumulate dust in a way that causes a "crunchy" sound when cleaning or repair is attempted. This issue is similar to those experienced by other folding devices on the market.

Apple's shift towards user-friendly repair options began in 2021, but its early efforts were marred by complexity and limited accessibility.

A built-in Android app that tracks phone usage remains largely unused by most users, despite being installed over 10 billion times. This tool, known as Digital Wellbeing, is hidden away in the Settings menu and typically doesn't have a home screen icon.

Digital Wellbeing provides more than just a daily unlock count; it offers valuable insights into app usage patterns and notification volume. The app also gives users tools to set boundaries around their screen time, making it a potentially powerful tool for those struggling with phone addiction.

Despite its potential benefits, Digital Wellbeing is often overlooked by Android users. With 1.49 million reviews and a decent rating of 4.1 stars, the app's core functionality seems to hold up well against its intended purpose.

Not every Android phone comes with Google's Digital Wellbeing app, however. Some manufacturers have chosen to install their own equivalent tools instead. Samsung Galaxy phones, for instance, ship without Google's Digital Wellbeing but come preloaded with their own version of a screen-time and parental-control tool.

Samsung is not the only brand that has opted out of using Google's app; Huawei also ships its devices with its own alternative. Brands like these are allowed to use either Google's app or their own equivalent, as long as they meet Google's requirements for including basic screen-time and parental-control tools at the top level of Settings.

Digital Wellbeing is a built-in Android app that tracks phone usage and provides users with insights into their behavior. While not every device comes with this app, those that do often have alternatives from manufacturers like Samsung and Huawei.

The built-in Android phone app most users never bother to use (but should)

Digital Wellbeing is a free app developed by Google LLC that's often overlooked on Android devices. It's pre-installed on many devices and can be accessed through the Settings menu rather than the app drawer.

Once opened, Digital Wellbeing provides a daily chart of your phone habits, including screen time, unlocking frequency, notifications received, and most-used apps. This information allows you to drill into specifics and examine your usage patterns more closely.

One of the key features of Digital Wellbeing is its ability to set up app timers, which enable users to limit their daily usage for specific tools. When a timer runs out, the app's icon dims, and it closes for the day, with timers resetting at midnight. Users can also set timers for groups of apps.

Samsung has taken this feature further by comparing time spent on different activities, including games, social media, productivity, and finance apps. Additionally, Samsung's Digital Wellbeing version tracks phone usage while driving or walking.

Users can use this information to make informed decisions about their app usage and set limits accordingly. When enabled, notifications from these blocked apps will be silenced, helping individuals stay focused on the task at hand.

Samsung has introduced additional modes that can be customized to suit individual needs and preferences. For instance, Work mode can be set up to activate automatically when a user arrives at their office or during specific time intervals on weekdays.

These customizations allow users to tailor the app's functionality to their unique circumstances, making it easier to maintain a balance between work, leisure, and personal activities on their devices.

The Android phone's built-in Digital Wellbeing feature offers various modes and routines that users can customize to suit their specific needs.
The Measure app is a built-in tool on iPhones from iPhone 6s and first-generation iPhone SE onwards that uses the camera to gauge dimensions.

A feature that's been lurking on iPhones for years has gone largely unnoticed by many users - a built-in tool for measuring objects using the phone's camera. This Measure app is pre-installed on devices from the iPhone 6s and first-generation iPhone SE onwards.

While it may not be well-known, this feature has been available since 2018, although Apple hasn't actively promoted it. As a result, many users might be unaware of its existence or have forgotten about it. The app can still be found in the Utilities folder on compatible iPhones.

The Measure app uses the camera to gauge dimensions and can provide instant height measurements for people, guide lines that snap to edges, as well as a ruler view with tick marks when close enough.

When using the Measure app for the first time, you need to slowly move your phone around the area in which you want to measure objects. This initial scan allows the app to map your surroundings and provide accurate measurements later on.

Once the scanning process is complete, you can start measuring objects by aiming the dot at one end of the object and tapping the + button. Then, move the camera view to the other end and tap the + button again, and the length will appear on the screen instantly.

You have several options for managing your measurements within the app. If you want to save a measurement, you can tap the shutter button to capture a screenshot of it in Photos. Alternatively, if you need to go back or start over, there's an undo button available, while tapping the clear icon will remove all measurements and take you back to square one.

The Measure app also has features that automatically detect rectangular objects. If it detects the edges of a rectangle, a white box will appear around it, allowing you to tap on it or the + button to see the dimensions of the object.

In addition to measuring lengths and detecting rectangles, the app can also be used as a level tool. By tapping the Level tab at the bottom of the screen, laying your phone flat on a surface such as a shelf or picture frame will show you how many degrees you're off by. You can even compare the slopes of two surfaces by capturing the first angle and then rotating the iPhone to match it with the second surface.

Measuring objects on the go has become increasingly convenient thanks to smartphone technology.

When traveling or shopping, it's not uncommon for people to need a quick measurement of their luggage or furniture. In these situations, having a digital tape measure at one's fingertips can be a lifesaver. By simply pointing the phone camera at an object, users can get an approximate measurement, which can help them gauge whether a piece of furniture will fit in their home.

However, it's essential to note that this method is not foolproof and should only be used as a rough estimate. For critical applications or projects where accuracy is paramount, a physical tape measure is still the best option. Additionally, the effectiveness of this feature depends on the object's dimensions and distance from the phone camera.

Android users may soon find themselves without a direct equivalent to Apple's Measure app, as Google has discontinued its own measurement tool in 2021. Meanwhile, Samsung's Quick Measure app, which was preinstalled on some Galaxy phones, will be shut down at the end of 2026. Despite this, users can still download and use the app until then.

Samsung has announced that it plans to revive the Quick Measure app in the future with improved services, although no specific timeline has been provided. The company claims that the app will continue to function after its scheduled shutdown date, giving users some time to adjust to alternative measurement methods.

For Android users without a built-in LiDAR scanner like some iPhone models, third-party apps are their primary option for measuring distances. However, these apps often face limitations due to the absence of advanced hardware capabilities. As a result, reviews suggest that many available options in the Play Store are marred by ads and aggressive subscription prompts.

Investing in a small keychain tape measure may be the most practical solution for Android users who need accurate measurements. This analog approach can provide reliable results without relying on potentially flawed or intrusive third-party apps.

Engadget: https://www.engadget.com/2294275/the-most-unexpected-everyday-tool-can-be-found-on-your-phone/

Folding phones offer a fresh take on mobile technology with versatile designs and expanded multitasking capabilities.

The latest crop of folding phones has arrived, and they're more than just a novelty - they're a game-changer for smartphone users. Gone are the days of single-screen slabs of glass; these innovative devices offer a fresh take on mobile technology.

Folding phones come in two distinct forms: the flip phone design, reminiscent of old-school handsets, or the book-like format that allows for expanded multitasking capabilities. This versatility is what sets folding phones apart from their traditional counterparts.

After putting several models through rigorous testing, we've narrowed down our top picks to those that truly stand out from the crowd. Whether you're a fan of compact designs or prefer the convenience of a larger screen, there's a folding phone to suit your needs and style preferences.

One such standout is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, which boasts fresh proportions and a purpose-built design. Its shorter and wider frame makes it feel even more comfortable in the hand than its predecessors.

When opened up, the 7.6-inch inner screen provides ample real estate for multitasking, allowing users to comfortably run three apps side by side in split-screen mode. The crease is significantly less noticeable than on previous models, making this a true powerhouse of a device.

The front-facing 5.5-inch screen offers a nice balance of size and aspect ratio, with minimal letterboxing. This makes it perfect for watching videos or browsing the web without distractions.

Under the hood, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset ensures seamless performance, handling demanding apps and games with ease.

The Galaxy Z Fold8's battery life is also noteworthy, lasting around five to six hours of screen-on time thanks to Samsung's innovative silicon-carbon battery technology.

This level of performance and usability makes it clear that folding phones are no longer just a gimmick - they're here to stay, and they're changing the way we interact with our devices.

With more manufacturers joining the fold (pun intended), the options available to consumers continue to grow, offering a range of choices for those looking to upgrade their mobile experience.

The camera capabilities of Samsung's Fold8 are not as impressive as those of its more expensive sibling, the Ultra. While the Fold8 boasts a 50-megapixel main sensor and a 50-megapixel ultrawide, it falls short in comparison to the Ultra's more powerful 200-megapixel main camera. This disparity is particularly noticeable for photographers who require high-quality images.

The Fold8 still manages to take excellent photos despite its limitations, making it suitable for casual users. However, those with more demanding photography needs may find themselves leaning towards the Ultra. For most individuals, though, the Fold8's camera capabilities should suffice.

Samsung's Fold8 offers a unique blend of tablet and phone features that could potentially win over those who have been hesitant to try foldable devices. Its price tag of $1,900 is certainly steep, but discounts are already emerging, and it's likely that more will be available in the coming holiday season.

The Fold8's weight of 201 grams makes it a relatively lightweight option compared to other folding phones on the market. This is particularly notable when considering the iPhone Duo, which tips the scales at 254 grams. While the Fold8 may not be the lightest option, its portability should still make it an attractive choice for some users.

The iPhone Duo has garnered praise for its polished hardware and durable design. Its outer screen provides ample space for use, and when opened, it reveals a compact tablet size with a clever nanotexture finish that minimizes the appearance of the crease.

One of the standout features of the iPhone Duo is its ability to run optimized apps side-by-side on the inner screen. This functionality is further enhanced by Apple's decision to relocate iOS navigation elements to the right-hand side, providing an intuitive and seamless experience for multitaskers.

The battery life of the iPhone Duo has been a notable highlight, with users reporting around 40 percent remaining after an average day's use. This impressive endurance makes it an excellent choice for those who require a device that can keep up with their demanding lifestyle.

Apple has also introduced several innovative features designed to take advantage of the iPhone Duo's unique form factor. These include Kid Cue and Smart Take, which enable users to capture photos more easily and automatically shoot images when everyone is posed. The addition of enhanced StandBy support further enhances the user experience, allowing users to utilize the outer screen as an alarm clock while the inner display gently pulses with light to wake them.

The Motorola Razr Ultra is a standout among folding phones due to its compact design and fashionable appeal. Its sleek appearance makes it perfect for those who want a phone that can fit comfortably in their pocket or small clutch. The device is available with two unique back options: suede-like Alcantara or sustainably sourced wood, both of which add an extra layer of style.

The Razr Ultra's durability is also noteworthy, featuring an IP48 rating for dust protection and a titanium-reinforced hinge to ensure the phone remains functional even after extended use. Additionally, the device boasts Gorilla Glass Ceramic displays, providing enhanced protection against scratches and cracks.

While some may expect significant upgrades from last year's model, the Razr Ultra 2026 retains many of its predecessor's features. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, 512 GB of storage, and 16 GB of RAM remain unchanged, ensuring seamless performance and ample storage capacity.

The phone's compact design is accompanied by a modest 4-inch OLED screen on the front, which allows users to add multiple widget panels for easy access to frequently used features. When opened, the device reveals a vibrant 7-inch AMOLED screen that delivers stunning visuals.

One of the notable upgrades in this year's model is the massive 5,000-mAh silicon-carbon battery. This enormous power source ensures that the phone can easily last two days on a single charge, making it an excellent choice for those who frequently forget to recharge their devices.

The Razr Ultra's camera system consists of three high-quality cameras: a 50-megapixel main camera, a reliable 50-megapixel ultrawide lens, and a 50-megapixel selfie camera. While the camera performs well in various situations, it may not quite match the standards set by some other flagship devices on the market.

The phone's video capture capabilities are also noteworthy, with Dolby Vision support that produces crisp and vibrant footage even in low-light conditions. Additionally, the device allows users to take selfies while the phone is closed, providing a unique preview of the image on the front screen.

While Motorola's AI features may be a major selling point for some, they do not necessarily enhance the user experience. Most of these features are somewhat redundant and fail to offer significant benefits over standard flagship phones.

The Motorola Razr offers a more affordable option for those looking to try out a folding phone without breaking the bank. This device has a similar design to its more expensive counterpart, but with slightly smaller screens and some compromises on performance.

While it may not offer the same level of power as other flagship phones, the Razr still delivers solid results in good lighting conditions with its camera. However, low-light and high-contrast scenes can be challenging for this device.

One area where the Razr excels is in its design, featuring a titanium-reinforced hinge that provides durability and resistance to dust and water. The outer display remains customizable, although it's smaller than on other models.

Battery life is another strong point of the Razr, capable of lasting several days without needing to be recharged. This makes it an attractive option for those who want a reliable folding phone without the hefty price tag.

However, there are some drawbacks to consider when choosing the Razr. For instance, users will only receive three Android upgrades, which may not be enough support for some consumers.

Despite its limitations, the Razr remains one of the most affordable options in the market, making it a worthwhile choice for those who want to experience the benefits of a folding phone without overspending.

The camera system on the Razr is serviceable but not exceptional, and Motorola's AI features are somewhat lacking compared to other devices.

While it may not be the best option for power users or those seeking advanced features, the Razr offers an accessible entry point into the world of folding phones.

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold may have its strengths, but it's far from perfect when it comes to camera capabilities. Despite being part of the "Pro lineup, this foldable phone lacks many advanced features found in its cheaper counterparts, such as the Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro XL.

One notable exception is the HiLight feature, which utilizes a group of color LEDs in the camera module's flash to indicate different colors based on who is calling or chatting with Gemini. However, this alone cannot make up for the absence of more powerful camera features like instant Night Sight and 120X digital zoom.

Users can still take excellent photos with the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, but they won't be among the best that Google has to offer. The price tag of $1,900 makes it a bitter pill to swallow, especially considering what's missing from this flagship phone.

In contrast, the Honor Magic V6 offers a more well-rounded experience despite its relatively small camera bump. This sleek foldable boasts better battery life, faster charging, and greater durability compared to last year's Magic V5.

The Honor Magic V6 also features a versatile camera and a responsive fingerprint sensor in the power button. Its MagicOS operating system is packed with useful features for foldable phones and AI capabilities, although it does come with some bloatware as well.

One of the most significant upgrades this year is the long-lasting 6,660-mAh silicon-carbon battery, which promises better durability than before. The phone also boasts an IP68/69 rating for water resistance and a snazzy new red finish.

The Honor Magic V6 is an excellent option for those in the UK, Europe, or other markets where it's sold, although it can be imported into the US if desired. For more information on phones not available in the US, readers may want to check out our guide on the Best Phones You Can't Buy in the US.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is a refined release that boasts a 6.5-inch cover display and an expansive 8-inch screen when opened. This foldable phone feels like two 6.5-inch displays side by side, making it fast and smooth to use.

However, its camera capabilities earn it the Ultra" title, featuring a combination of a 200-megapixel main shooter, 50-megapixel ultrawide, and a 10-megapixel telephoto lens that supports 3X optical zoom. Unfortunately, this phone lacks Qi2 support for magnetic wireless charging and has a camera module that makes it rock when lying flat on a surface.

Despite its impressive camera features, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra misses out on a place above due to the smaller Fold8 being easier to handle. This raises questions about whether size or capabilities are more important in a foldable phone.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 stands out as one of the most compact options available, weighing in at a remarkably light and thin design thanks to its redesigned chassis.

This new design makes it the closest competitor to Motorola's Razr Ultra among our selection of folding phones, while also boasting improved durability. The device features a 4.1-inch cover screen that expands into a full 6.9-inch candy bar when flipped open, offering an impressive display experience. However, its camera system is somewhat basic compared to other high-end models, consisting of a 50-megapixel primary shooter and a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens.

The Motorola Razr Fold offers an alternative take on the folding phone concept at a higher price point of $1,900.

Wired: https://www.wired.com/gallery/best-folding-phones/

The launch of Apple's first foldable device has drawn comparisons to Samsung's original Galaxy Fold.

Apple has finally begun shipping its highly anticipated iPhone Duo to some lucky customers, while others will have to wait until January to get their hands on the device. As they unbox their new phone and transfer all their software, many users are likely to be disappointed by the state of their apps.

The issue lies in the fact that many popular apps have not been optimized for the iPhone Duo's unique screen ratios, resulting in awkwardly unused space on the screen. However, Apple fans can take heart from the fact that history has shown that app updates will soon follow to address this problem.

In line with previous experiences with new Apple devices, it is likely that software developers will quickly release updates to ensure their apps look and function properly on the iPhone Duo's novel screens. This includes the 4:3 inner display and the squat and wide front screen.

For those who may be feeling left behind by Android foldables, which have been on the market for a similar passport-sized format for over a decade, it is worth noting that most apps are already correctly sized for devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8.

The launch of Apple's first foldable device has drawn comparisons to Samsung's original Galaxy Fold, which debuted with several issues that were later addressed through software updates and refinements.

As a result of this experience, many expect Apple to follow suit and quickly patch up any shortcomings in its own folding technology. This is particularly true given the relatively seamless user experience offered by the iPhone Duo, which boasts a minimal crease and smooth hinge design.

The device's internal software has also been optimized for its folding screen, complete with animations that are sure to inspire feelings of FOMO among users. Furthermore, the iPhone Duo features IP68 dust- and water-resistance, making it easier to use in various environments.

In contrast to many Android foldables, which come in a range of sizes and formats, Apple's iPhone Duo represents a single design concept. This is exemplified by devices like the Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, both of which feature larger inner screens than their outer counterparts but differ significantly from one another in terms of size and proportions.

The iPhone Duo's unique design may actually help speed up app updates, according to analysts. The outer display has the same aspect ratio as the larger inner screen, which Apple highlighted during its September presentation.

Developers only need to create one app size that will work seamlessly on both displays, making it easier for them to adapt their apps to the Duo's foldable design. This is a departure from Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, where the cover and inner screens have different aspect ratios.

The transition to foldables is not without its challenges, however. It takes time for app makers to adjust to new display formats, as evidenced by past changes in smartphone design. For instance, when iPhones finally ditched physical buttons below the screen, apps initially struggled to adapt.

As one industry expert pointed out, it's a similar story with foldables, some apps may not make full use of the Duo's larger inner screen at first. This is because app makers have to rework their designs to accommodate the new display format, which can be a time-consuming process.

The rollout of new features on the iPhone Duo has been a bumpy ride for some users, with many complaining about poorly optimized apps that don't take full advantage of the device's unique display format.

This is due in part to the complexity of designing software for foldable devices, which require apps to adapt quickly and seamlessly to changes in screen size and orientation. As one industry expert pointed out, when a user opens or closes a foldable phone, it's like asking an app to perform acrobatics - instantly switching between internal and external displays while rearranging the layout of pixels.

Many users have had to deal with slow-loading native apps that don't quite deliver on the promise of a foldable future. Meanwhile, third-party apps have struggled to keep up, often resulting in a less-than-smooth user experience. Some apps were barely usable at all when they first appeared on the market.

As it stands now, most apps are designed with Android foldables in mind, thanks to years of software updates from Google that specifically address flexible displays. The iPhone Duo will have to play catch-up if it wants to offer users a seamless experience.

Apple's close relationships with app developers will likely play a significant role in ensuring their software takes full advantage of the iPhone Duo's unique screen proportions.

Developers of popular apps like Instagram have had experience adapting to new display formats, including those found on Android foldables. This expertise should make it easier for them to update their apps to fit the Duo's screens, although it's difficult to predict exactly when this will happen.

As more and more developers work to optimize their apps for the iPhone Duo, users can expect a seamless experience that showcases the device's capabilities.

CNET: https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/iphone-duo-owners-your-apps-will-look-better-soon/

Chinese phone manufacturers have recently surpassed industry giants Apple and Samsung in some areas, such as battery life and camera capabilities.

Chinese phone manufacturers are breaking free from their niche status, offering products that rival those of industry giants Apple and Samsung. In some areas, such as battery life and camera capabilities, these Chinese brands are even surpassing their more established counterparts.

Oppo has recently showcased its latest high-end photography-focused phones, the Find X10 and Find X10 Pro, on the Spanish island of Mallorca. The launch event took place at a picturesque finca surrounded by olive groves and wild goats, but this unconventional setting was not a random choice. Oppo is actually Spain's biggest European market, and its popularity is rapidly growing.

The story of Oppo's global success is being replicated worldwide. According to researchers Counterpoint and Omdia, the company ranked as the fourth-largest phone manufacturer globally in terms of shipments during the first half of this year. This achievement is all the more impressive given that Chinese brands have traditionally been well established at home but struggled to expand internationally.

Oppo's success in Europe is a key factor in its global growth. The company has managed to establish itself as a major player in the region, with Spain being its largest market on the continent. As Oppo continues to expand its reach, it will be interesting to see how it navigates the increasingly competitive smartphone landscape.

The smartphone industry is currently facing significant challenges, including the ongoing memory shortage known as RAMageddon. This shortage has led to rising phone prices and a substantial decline in shipments, making it even more difficult for manufacturers to break into the market.

The smartphone industry is facing a perfect storm of challenges that are forcing manufacturers to rethink their strategies for success.

Flagship and premium phones are seen as a lifeline for phone-makers struggling to stay afloat in a market where sales are declining. According to Runar Bjorhovde, principal analyst at Omdia, these high-end devices are more resilient than budget and midrange options.

However, the premium segment is not immune to the difficulties facing the industry as a whole. In fact, phone-makers are finding it increasingly difficult to penetrate markets dominated by established players such as Apple and Samsung.

The US market, in particular, presents a significant challenge for Chinese smartphone manufacturers like Oppo. Despite its size and profitability, the US market is proving too tricky to navigate due to geopolitical tensions and restrictions on Chinese tech companies.

One major hurdle facing Oppo and other Chinese phone-makers is their lack of established relationships with carriers in the US. This makes it difficult for them to get their phones onto store shelves and into the hands of consumers.

In contrast, European markets are seen as a more viable option for investment by Oppo. The company has announced plans to increase its investment in Europe by 30% over the next three years, a move that is likely to be replicated by other Chinese manufacturers.

The lack of diversity in smartphones available to American consumers is starkly evident when compared to other regions. In Europe, for instance, a wide range of brands are accessible to buyers, including those from China that do not have a presence in the US market.

One such brand is Oppo, which has been making waves in the European market with its innovative foldable phones. According to Ben Wood, chief analyst at FDM CCS, these cutting-edge devices from companies like Honor and Xiaomi are particularly noticeable by their absence in the American market.

The dominance of Apple and Samsung in the US smartphone market is mirrored to some extent in Europe, although it's not as pronounced. However, Oppo's European CEO Elvis Zhou is determined to break this duopoly and offer consumers more choices when it comes to premium phones.

With multiple successful brands operating in China, including Huawei, Vivo, Xiaomi, Honor, and Oppo, there are significantly more options available to Chinese consumers than their American counterparts.

The smartphone market in Europe is heating up as Chinese brands vie for a slice of the action. Xiaomi, Honor, and Vivo are all competing with Oppo to capture a share of the European market, which has historically been dominated by established players.

The gap between products being launched in China and those available in Europe has traditionally spanned several months. However, this is changing rapidly as brands like Oppo launch new products simultaneously in both markets. The Find X10 series, for instance, was released in China just a month ago.

When it comes to choosing a premium phone, buyers often prioritize camera quality, but also consider factors such as brand reputation and aesthetics. While Oppo has excelled in developing high-quality cameras, its performance in other areas is less impressive.

Oppo's strategy is to target the younger generation with its Find X10 series, which Omdia research suggests are more likely to purchase premium phones. The company believes that this demographic will make informed purchasing decisions based on product specifications and reviews rather than brand loyalty.

The company's focus on the young generation offers a unique opportunity for Oppo to connect with customers who are increasingly reliant on social media and AI-driven recommendations when making purchasing decisions.

Oppo's innovative approach to targeting young consumers has proven successful in the European market. According to data from Omdia, the Find X9 series saw a significant increase in its share of the premium European market between 2025 and 2026.

However, industry analysts warn that Oppo may struggle to maintain this momentum as other Chinese rivals adopt similar strategies. The competition is expected to be fierce, with multiple companies vying for attention from tech-savvy consumers who are increasingly influenced by social media recommendations and AI-driven purchasing decisions.

Despite the challenges ahead, Oppo appears committed to a long-term approach in Europe, prioritizing patience over rapid market expansion.

CNET: https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/oppo-find-x10-pro-europe-launch-americas-loss/

The iPhone Duo has successfully withstood 20,000 folds in a rigorous testing process designed to simulate wear and tear.

The highly anticipated iPhone Duo has finally hit the market, sparking a frenzy of excitement among tech enthusiasts and prompting long lines outside Apple Stores. To get our hands on one for testing purposes, we braved three hours at an Apple Store in Louisville, Kentucky.

As part of our rigorous testing process, we've been putting the iPhone Duo through its paces to see how many times it can withstand being folded without sustaining damage. And as of Saturday afternoon, a significant milestone has been reached: 20,000 folds and counting.

The goal behind this exercise is to subject the phone's hinge and dual screens to extreme use conditions, simulating the wear and tear that would occur over time with repeated folding and unfolding. This process requires a custom-built machine designed specifically for testing foldable phones like the iPhone Duo and its rival, the Galaxy Z Fold 8.

The testing equipment, dubbed "Fold-a-Phone, was built in-house by our team of engineers and experts, who have spent months perfecting the methodology to ensure accurate results. This machine will continue to subject the iPhone Duo to a relentless folding cycle, monitoring every aspect of its performance.

Our team is now closely observing the phone's behavior as it undergoes repeated opening and closing cycles, scrutinizing the hinge's durability and the interaction between the magnetic closures that secure the screen in place.

Our testing machine is now collecting valuable data on the iPhone Duo's performance and lifespan in repeated opening and closing cycles. This information will complement our team member's hands-on review of the device, providing a comprehensive understanding of its capabilities.

Since Apple hasn't publicly disclosed any claims about the iPhone Duo's foldable lifespan, our testing process aims to provide a wealth of data on this aspect, as well as comparisons with competing models in the market. This data will help readers make informed decisions when considering purchasing a foldable phone.

We plan to share regular updates and comparisons during our ongoing testing period, giving users insight into how the iPhone Duo performs over time. Our team is committed to providing an in-depth analysis of this device's strengths and weaknesses.

The iPhone Duo's entry into the foldable market marks a significant milestone for Apple, which is seven years behind Samsung in terms of foldable phone innovation. Motorola and other manufacturers have been experimenting with various foldable designs, including trifold models that have been showcased over the past few years.

Our team has discussed how the iPhone Duo's release will legitimize the foldable phone concept, making it more mainstream and accessible to a wider audience. This development is expected to drive further innovation in the industry, as manufacturers strive to create more user-friendly and functional foldable devices.

The iPhone Duo has been put through its paces in our testing machine, and it's performed remarkably well so far. The device has demonstrated a remarkable level of durability, withstanding repeated folding and unfolding without showing any signs of wear.

Our proprietary testing machine is designed to mimic real-world usage patterns, rather than simply measuring the speed at which a phone can be opened and closed. This approach allows us to gather more accurate data on how well a foldable device holds up to everyday use.

To replicate this kind of usage, our machine cycles through a series of openings and closings at a rate of roughly 4 seconds per cycle. Each cycle consists of four separate actions: opening the phone, fully extending it, closing it partially, and then closing it completely.

This cadence helps to avoid putting undue stress on the hinge or generating excessive heat, which can be a problem with some testing methods. By mimicking real-world usage patterns, we're able to get a more accurate read on how well a device will hold up in actual use.

The iPhone Duo has shown impressive results so far, but it still faces a tough challenge in beating the Galaxy Z Fold 8. To emerge victorious, Apple's device will need to demonstrate exceptional durability and performance in our testing machine.

As the competition between foldable devices continues to heat up, manufacturers are under pressure to create more user-friendly and functional products. The results of our testing are likely to have a significant impact on this process, as they provide valuable insights into what works and what doesn't when it comes to designing foldable phones.

Our testing setup for the iPhone Duo has been designed with simplicity in mind, using standard components to keep costs down and development time short. Two armatures are at the heart of the Fold-a-Phone, each engineered to smoothly open and close the phone with a controlled force.

The movement is powered by industrial-grade stepper motors, which are precisely controlled by the host software running on a connected computer. This setup allows for fine-tuned adjustments in torque, ensuring that every step of the folding process is completed safely and efficiently. If any of the proximity sensors fail to detect the armature's position, the machine immediately comes to a halt.

We have also equipped our testing rig with cameras to capture high-quality images and video from multiple angles, providing a comprehensive view of the iPhone Duo's performance during each test cycle. Regular status updates are monitored by the computer, allowing us to track the phone's condition in real-time.

To ensure uninterrupted operation, the entire setup is connected to an EcoFlow Delta 3 Plus power station, which provides a reliable backup against electricity outages. All data generated during testing is securely stored across multiple locations for safekeeping and easy access.

The custom sled" used to secure each iPhone Duo to the machine is designed specifically to match the phone's exact dimensions using our Prusa Core One 3D printer. The sled is attached to the machine with heavy-duty double-sided tape, providing a snug fit that withstands the stresses of repeated folding and unfolding cycles.

The testing process is ongoing, with room for improvement identified in the machine's operation. Efforts are being made to refine the equipment so it can run more smoothly and quietly without disrupting the folding cycle.

As new devices enter the market, including Apple's iPhone Duo, they are put through rigorous testing on our Fold-a-Phone machine. The results of these tests will continue to be reported on, with a focus on how well each device withstands the stresses of repeated folding and unfolding cycles.

CNET: https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/iphone-duo-how-we-test-folds/

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 offers a refined design and improved durability in a compact smartphone package.

The latest iteration of Samsung's flip phone, the Galaxy Z Flip8, has been released, and it's a significant refinement of its predecessor. At $1,200, it's not an inexpensive device, but for those who crave a compact smartphone that doesn't feel cumbersome in their pocket, it may be worth considering.

One of the key selling points of the Z Flip8 is its sleek design. It's remarkably lightweight and slim, making it easy to slip into even the smallest bags or purses. While it may not offer the same level of screen real estate as a larger phone or tablet, its compact size makes it an attractive option for those who prefer a more portable device.

Despite being a minor iteration over last year's model, the Z Flip8 still boasts top-notch performance and a solid main camera. The addition of AI features also adds to its appeal, making it a well-rounded choice for those in the market for a compact smartphone.

However, one drawback of the Z Flip8 is its price. At $1,200, it's $100 more than last year's model, which may be a barrier for some consumers. Additionally, while the cover screen is more useful than before, it still has limitations and may not meet everyone's expectations.

For those who are looking to dip their toes into the world of folding phones or simply want something small and portable, the Z Flip8 should certainly be on the radar. It's a practical choice for those who value compact devices above all else.

The Z Flip8 is also notable for its durability, with a new hinge that makes the crease less noticeable and easier to open. While it may still take some practice to open one-handed, the improved hinge is a welcome addition.

Overall, while the Z Flip8 may not offer revolutionary changes over last year's model, it's still an attractive option for those who prioritize compact size and practicality.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8's durability has been improved with its IP48 rating, but it still has some limitations when it comes to dust and dirt particles. The phone's compact size makes it more susceptible to damage from tiny debris, which can still cause issues even though it's water-resistant.

One of the standout features of this device is its design options. Available in a range of colors, including pink, graphite, cream, and mint, there's something for everyone. My review unit was the eye-catching pink option that certainly turned heads.

The Z Flip8 retains its physical SIM slot, which may be a welcome feature for some users who prefer to stick with traditional phone plans rather than switching to eSIMs. Additionally, the power button now includes a fingerprint sensor that works well and adds an extra layer of security.

Both displays on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 are high-quality AMOLED screens that provide excellent viewing experiences. The external 4.1-inch display has a refresh rate of either 60Hz or 120Hz, while the main 6.9-inch display boasts a variable refresh rate between 1 and 120Hz.

The phone's performance is where it truly shines, thanks to its Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy processor. Paired with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, this device can handle demanding tasks and games without any issues.

Despite its compact design, the Z Flip8 does get warm when used extensively, which may lead to some throttling of the processor in extreme cases. However, overall performance remains excellent, making it a great option for those who value portability and practicality.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8's audio capabilities are a pleasant surprise, with stereo speakers that deliver clear sound without distortion, even at high volumes. This makes it suitable for watching videos on the go. Additionally, call quality is satisfactory, and the phone's design allows for seamless transitions between opening and closing to answer or end calls.

However, users must enable this feature in the Phone app settings under Flip options. Connectivity-wise, the Z Flip8 comes equipped with 5G (without mmWave), Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 5.4, but it lacks ultra-wideband (UWB) for more precise positioning. In contrast, the Fold8 models boast Bluetooth 6 and UWB.

The phone's compact size is both a blessing and a curse when it comes to battery life. While Samsung has installed a 4,300-mAh silicon-carbon battery that suits casual use, heavy users may find themselves in need of a power bank to stay powered up. Furthermore, charging speeds are disappointingly slow at 25 watts wired and 15 watts wireless.

The absence of Qi2's magnetic feature is another point of contention, as it would have greatly simplified wireless charging. For photographers, the main 50-megapixel shooter delivers acceptable results in many situations, although some noise may creep in when shooting in low light conditions.

Despite its limitations, most users will be satisfied with the photos captured by the primary camera. The 12-megapixel ultrawide lens is useful for capturing more subjects or taking group selfies, but it does not quite match the quality of the main shooter. Unfortunately, there is no telephoto lens, forcing users to rely on cropping to achieve a decent zoom effect.

By emulating 2X zoom and cropping, users can achieve passable results up to 10X in well-lit conditions. However, this workaround is not ideal, and those who value high-quality photography may want to consider other options.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 offers several camera features that are designed to make photography easier and more intuitive. One notable feature is the ability to flip the cover screen for a preview of photos before taking them, which can be particularly useful when taking selfies.

In addition to this feature, the phone's AI capabilities allow users to pick a subject in group videos and reframe them as though that subject is the main focus. This can be especially handy for capturing important moments at events like school plays or sports games.

Other AI-powered features on the phone include Now Brief, which provides useful information such as calendar events, reminders, and local weather forecasts, and Now Nudge, which suggests adding dates to your calendar from messages, sharing locations or photos, and auto-filling forms.

While the cover screen has been a weakness for previous models in the Flip line, Samsung has made some improvements with the Flip8. Users can now access more apps on the cover screen, including popular services like YouTube, Netflix, Google Maps, and Messages.

However, accessing these additional apps requires users to install Good Lock and then the MultiStar plug-in, which is a convoluted process that many will find frustrating. It's surprising that Samsung doesn't preinstall these features, especially given the high price of the phone.

The inclusion of bloatware on an expensive device like the Galaxy Z Flip8 is also a drawback for some users, who may not want or need apps like Facebook, Spotify, and Instagram taking up space on their phone.

The cover screen on the Galaxy Z Flip8 offers a convenient feature: users can prop it up and watch videos while multitasking on their desk.

This functionality is especially useful for those who want to keep an eye on something without having to constantly switch between tasks or apps.

For consumers looking at flip phones, Samsung has some competition from Motorola's Razr line. There are several options available, including a more affordable model that still packs a punch.

One of the most expensive options in the Razr lineup is the Ultra, which boasts superior features such as better camera capabilities and faster charging speeds but comes with a hefty price tag of $1,500.

Wired: https://www.wired.com/review/samsung-galazy-z-flip8/

The latest tests of Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold show that they offer larger, flexible displays for reading and entertainment.

Foldable phones have hit the market with a hefty price tag, raising questions about their value proposition.

Two recent tests of Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold have revealed that these devices offer improved multitasking, reading, and entertainment experiences due to their larger, flexible displays. However, they also come with a steep cost.

Foldable phones are essentially smartphones with folding touch screens, allowing users to expand the screen size as needed. This innovation has given rise to three distinct form factors: clamshell, book-style, and trifold designs.

The clamshell design, exemplified by Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 8, folds into a compact shape similar to traditional flip phones, making it highly portable and stylish.

When it comes to adopting a foldable phone, certain individuals may find them particularly useful. People who already own both a smartphone and tablet might consider upgrading to a single device that can seamlessly handle different screen sizes.

This is because a book-style foldable can effectively replace both devices, providing an uninterrupted experience regardless of whether you're working on a small or large display. Moreover, the cost of purchasing a foldable phone often compares favorably to buying separate new phone and tablet models.

In addition to convenience, foldables are also well-suited for individuals who frequently use their phones for work, reading, or streaming content on-the-go. This is because they offer an easy way to multitask on the larger display before reverting to a smaller screen for everyday tasks.

Larger displays on foldable phones make them an attractive option for those who want a bigger screen without carrying around an extra device. This is especially true for readers and frequent streamers who enjoy watching videos or browsing through content on their mobile devices.

The design of foldables also holds appeal for some individuals, who value the unique form factor over productivity features. The clamshell design, in particular, seems to be gaining popularity among those who prioritize aesthetics over functionality.

While modern foldables have improved in terms of durability, they still pose a higher risk of mechanical failure due to their moving hinges and flexible internal displays compared to traditional smartphones.

The durability of modern foldables is still a concern due to their complex design. For instance, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 model I've been using has a lower water and dust resistance rating than its more robust counterparts, specifically IP48 instead of the standard IP68.

Other potential drawbacks include the phone's hinge being prone to bending or snapping, which can compromise the device's structural integrity. Additionally, the internal screen that folds is often less resistant to scratches compared to the sturdier external display.

Another consideration is battery life, as the larger screen on foldables tends to drain power faster than a typical smartphone. Furthermore, when folded, these devices are generally thicker and may not fit in certain pockets or storage spaces due to their increased size.

When considering a foldable phone, it's essential to weigh its benefits against your specific needs. If you rely on your device for everyday tasks or require enhanced durability and battery life, a traditional smartphone may be a better option.

Foldable phones are ideal for those who want a tablet-like experience without the bulk, but they come with a price tag that may not be justifiable for everyone. In the end, choosing between a foldable phone and a standard device ultimately depends on your unique requirements and preferences.

Good Housekeeping: https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/what-to-buy/tech/a74133085/foldable-phones-worth-it/

Consumers will be able to try out Apple's latest innovation, the iPhone Duo, at an Apple Store starting this Friday.

The wait is finally over for those eager to try out Apple's latest innovation - the iPhone Duo. Starting this Friday, consumers will be able to visit an Apple Store and get hands-on experience with the foldable phone.

For many, trying before buying is a crucial step in making a purchasing decision, especially when it comes to a device as unique and expensive as the iPhone Duo, which starts at $2,000 or more. By getting a feel for how the device operates and its features, consumers can make an informed decision about whether or not it's right for them.

When picking up the iPhone Duo at the Apple Store, there are several things to keep in mind to get the most out of your experience. One of the first things you'll want to check is the animation that plays when unfolding the device. This visually appealing effect adds a touch of delight to what would otherwise be an ordinary action.

The animation showcased by Apple when unveiling the Duo has sparked curiosity among potential buyers, and it's likely one of the first features you'll notice when using the device. Opening and closing the Duo repeatedly will only add to your appreciation for this clever design element.

Apple Stores are well-equipped to provide a comprehensive experience with the iPhone Duo, giving consumers a chance to get familiar with its inner display and overall functionality.

The Apple Store will offer an opportunity for hands-on exploration of the iPhone Duo's features, allowing consumers to make informed decisions about their purchase.

The iPhone Duo's foldable design comes with its own set of compromises, including a noticeable crease on the screen. However, this minimal crease is less pronounced than what's typically seen on other foldables, and it becomes even easier to ignore when watching content.

The Duo also boasts a matte display, which is a welcome change from the glossy screens often found on other foldable devices. This matte finish makes it simpler to view the screen in bright environments without being distracted by annoying reflections.

When using the outer passport-size display, you may find that it crops content to fit its unique aspect ratio, making video watching slightly awkward. However, there's a workaround - prop the phone up in tent mode and enjoy your favorite shows without any issues.

The inner display offers more screen real estate, but its passport-style design also means it has a different aspect ratio than what you're used to on regular phones. This can result in letterboxing when watching videos, where parts of the image are cut off at the top or sides.

To get a better sense of how these aspects affect your viewing experience, try setting up the iPhone Duo in both configurations and watching content with it.

The issue of aspect ratio is not unique to the iPhone Duo - other foldables like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 suffer from the same problem. If you plan on using your phone for a lot of full-screen video watching, it's worth trying out different viewing options to see what works best for you.

When testing the iPhone Duo at an Apple Store, pay attention to how your frequently used apps appear on both the inner and outer displays. Check if they look unusual or behave strangely, which may be due to the device's unique aspect ratio.

Rotating the inner screen is also a good idea, as it can provide valuable insights into how apps function in this particular orientation. A wider screen like this one could potentially enhance vertical video viewing and scrolling through social media platforms.

Some apps, particularly those that have not been optimized for foldable designs, may appear wonky or different from what you're used to. This is likely a temporary issue that will be resolved once developers update their software to support the new design.

The iPhone Duo's camera capabilities are another aspect worth exploring at an Apple Store demo. While it may not match the performance of higher-end models like the iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max, it still offers impressive photo-taking abilities.

When taking selfies with the iPhone Duo, users have two primary options: capturing photos using the outer screen's 12-megapixel front-facing camera or utilizing the inner display and its twin 48-megapixel rear cameras.

The latter option provides a preview of the shot on the outer screen, allowing for more creative control. However, it also means that the phone needs to be opened up, which may not always be convenient.

When using the inner display's front-facing camera for video calls, the resulting photos are likely to be less impressive compared to those taken with the other two options.

It is worth trying out all three methods and evaluating the quality of the selfies produced by each. This will give a better understanding of which method works best in different situations.

Typing on the iPhone Duo's front display can be somewhat awkward due to its unusual aspect ratio, making it more comfortable to use the inner display for typing tasks.

The iPhone Duo's dual-screen design presents a unique typing experience, and it's worth exploring how this setup works in practice. When using the cover screen for one-handed typing, users may find that their thumbs can navigate the keyboard with some ease.

Experimenting with both portrait and landscape orientations on the inner display reveals that Apple has provided flexibility through its keyboard options. Users can choose between a split keyboard layout or larger keys to suit their preference, but ultimately, the effectiveness of these options will depend on individual typing styles.

CNET: https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/test-iphone-duo-things-to-try-at-apple-store/

Customers attempting to buy more than two iPhone Duos are met with a message stating that only two devices can be purchased per customer.

Apple has placed a limit on purchases of its upcoming foldable iPhone Duo, allowing each customer to buy at most two devices.

When attempting to add more than two iPhone Duos to an order on the Apple Store, customers are met with a message stating that only two devices can be purchased per customer. This restriction is in place regardless of whether the purchase is made online or in-store when the phone becomes available on Friday.

The limit of two foldables per person will apply universally, affecting both those who pre-order their iPhone Duo and those who opt to buy it in-store. It's worth noting that Apple has a limited stock of the new device, which may lead to long wait times for customers trying to get their hands on one - or more.

Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo are currently backed up until late January, with estimated delivery dates ranging from several weeks after the initial purchase date. However, those who do manage to secure an in-store purchase may still face the challenge of waiting in line overnight to be among the few individuals able to get their hands on one of these highly anticipated devices.

In a departure from its usual practices, Apple has reintroduced restrictions on iPhone purchases, limiting buyers to two devices per order for its latest release, the iPhone Duo. This move marks a return to a policy first implemented nearly two decades ago when the original iPhone was launched in 2007.

Initially, buyers were allowed to purchase only two iPhones per order, but this limit was later eased to five by the holiday season that year. However, in 2012, Apple reverted back to its stricter policy, limiting orders for the iPhone 5 to two per customer. This time around, it seems that the company is taking a more cautious approach with its latest foldable device.

Despite the restrictions on online purchases, we found that multiple iPhone Duos can be added to shopping carts at major carriers such as Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, provided buyers sign up for a new line of service. However, this option comes with the caveat that all additional devices will require activation with a carrier.

The iPhone Duo is Apple's entry into the foldable phone market, which has seen significant competition from other manufacturers since 2020. Samsung, Motorola, and Google have all released their own versions of foldable phones, while Chinese brands like Huawei and Xiaomi have also joined the fray, although none have achieved widespread sales in the US.

The release of Apple's iPhone Duo has sent shockwaves through the tech industry, with analysts predicting it will capture nearly a third of the foldable phone market by year's end. According to the International Data Corporation, the Duo is expected to account for 31% of the foldable share of the phones market by the end of this year, and could reach as high as 40% in 2027.

Early reviews of the iPhone Duo have been largely positive, with critics praising its finer details. Despite some minor drawbacks associated with being a first-generation device, many reviewers agree that the experience feels fluid and cohesive. This is particularly evident in hands-on experiences, where the phone's design and functionality come together seamlessly.

The success of the iPhone Duo has also sparked renewed interest in foldable phones as a whole. As the market continues to grow, it remains to be seen whether Apple's new device will maintain its momentum throughout the holiday season and into the new year, solidifying its position as a major player in the industry.

CNET: https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/apple-limits-iphone-duo-purchases/

The Oppo Find X10 Pro Max is a flagship phone released by Oppo for markets in Europe, Asia, and other territories.

Oppo has released its latest flagship phone, the Find X10 Pro Max, which is set to hit markets in Europe, Asia, and other territories. This new device replaces last year's Find X9 Pro and sits below the Find X9 Ultra in Oppo's lineup. Unfortunately for US-based customers, it seems they will once again face difficulties in getting their hands on this latest offering from Oppo.

The Find X10 series does not bring significant innovations to the table this year. Instead, Oppo has opted for minor design tweaks to its upper-midrange flagship phone. The device boasts a camera unit with a standalone color sensor and flash positioned next to it, giving it a distinct look. However, the overall design appears to be largely reminiscent of previous Find X series 'pro' phones.

One notable aspect of the Find X10 Pro Max's design is its collaboration with Hasselblad. This partnership is reflected in the phone's camera array, which features a slender orange accent outlining the lenses. The device also showcases Oppo's refined materials and finish, including a matte-finish aluminum frame and a textured back panel.

The phone comes in two colors: Luna White and Titanium Grey. The latter has a smooth back cover that lacks the textured panel found on the Luna White model. It is worth noting that the textured back panel on the Luna White model may not be as grippy as expected.

Key features of the Find X10 Pro Max include its 6.78-inch display, which boasts peak brightness levels of 3,600 nits. This makes it noticeably brighter than last year's Find X9 Pro. Additionally, the device supports adaptive refresh rates from 1 to 144Hz and offers 10-bit color depth and Dolby Vision.

While Oppo's latest flagship phone may not be breaking new ground in terms of design or innovation, it still presents a compelling package for those looking for a high-end smartphone experience.

Oppo's display refinements aim to provide a more immersive experience, particularly in changing light conditions. The company has introduced faster color temperature adjustments, which it claims will better match the surrounding environment. This is achieved through a new "adaptive tone option that utilizes a five-channel sensor.

While I couldn't discern significant differences in color changes during my testing, auto-brightness seemed snappier when transitioning between dark and light environments. This was particularly evident when capturing quick shots of a drone outdoors, where accurate brightness adjustments are crucial.

The camera setup on the Oppo Find X10 Pro Max features three 200-megapixel sensors across its main, telephoto, and ultrawide lenses. However, this configuration may not be as potent as that found in the company's previous flagship, the Find X9 Ultra, which boasts a larger 1/1.12-inch Sony sensor.

In comparison to the X9 Ultra, the Find X10 Pro Max employs a 1/1.3-inch Samsung HPC sensor for its main camera. This shift results in a roughly 25 percent smaller sensor size on the new device. When examining images captured by both phones, the X9 Ultra performed better in low-light conditions, particularly when using Hasselblad Master mode.

The Oppo Find X10 Pro Max also features a Lumo True image engine, which aims to produce natural colors and textures with minimal AI processing. In practice, this results in fewer aggressive corrections on text detail and patterning compared to the company's previous flagships.

The trade-off between sensor size and overall camera performance is an interesting one, particularly given the X9 Ultra's superior low-light capabilities. It remains to be seen how these differences will impact user experience and image quality in real-world scenarios.

The Find X10 Pro Max's telephoto camera has a unique zooming capability, allowing for 3x optical zoom and then cropping into its massive 200MP sensor to extend that range to 6x lossless zoom. This is a notable feature, but it falls short of the 10x zoom offered by the Find X9 Ultra.

In terms of macro photography, the Find X10 Pro Max excels with its capability of achieving a 10cm focal distance on its 3x periscope telephoto lens. This allows for incredibly detailed shots of small objects up close.

When compared to last year's model, the Find X10 Pro Max shows significant improvements in low-light autofocus and image detail capture. Regardless of the shooting mode used, this year's model consistently outperforms its predecessor.

The default camera setup on the Find X10 series is a convenient feature that processes full-resolution 200MP images into 26MP images across its entire zoom range. This reduces the need for extensive settings adjustments and makes photography more streamlined.

Oppo has also introduced DeepPix technology, which is integrated into Samsung's ISOCELL HPC sensor, to enhance video capabilities. This technology claims to deliver up to 17 stops of dynamic range, allowing for better capture in both bright and dimly lit environments.

Early testing suggests that the Find X10 Pro Max shows a slight improvement in preventing blown-out footage in bright light conditions, but this upgrade is more incremental than revolutionary. For serious vloggers or smartphone videographers, however, even small improvements can make a significant difference.

The X10 Pro Max's camera capabilities extend beyond its impressive triple 200-megapixel sensor setup. Video professionals can take advantage of the Pro Video mode, which allows for open-gate capture using each sensor's full imaging area. This results in wider coverage and greater flexibility when editing footage, making it easier to crop and reframe scenes.

Pro Video mode also supports Oppo's O-Log2 format, enabling creators to work with high-quality video files. Additionally, the feature includes LUT previewing and compatibility with Blackmagic's camera app. These advanced features cater specifically to professional videographers who demand more from their smartphone cameras.

The X10 Pro Max has partnered with Tilta for a KHRONOS creator kit, designed to enhance the phone's capabilities as a filmmaking tool. The kit includes a phone cage, grip, cooling fan, and flash, providing a comprehensive setup for content creators. This collaboration aims to further solidify the Find X10 Pro Max's position in the professional videography market.

The teleconvertor system returns with an improved design, feeling less flimsy than its predecessor. Comprising a specialized case, teleconvertor lens, and lens plate, it offers an optional extension for the camera's capabilities. The teleconvertor lens itself is identical to the one used in the Find X9 Pro.

However, users will need to acquire new adapter plates and cases specifically designed for the Find X10 Pro Max. This is because the existing components from the previous model do not fit seamlessly with the new device. Unfortunately, this means that the teleconvertor lens plate still covers other camera sensors when in use, forcing users to remove it to access the remaining 200MP cameras.

The design of the teleconvertor mounting plate has raised concerns regarding its functionality and usability. Similar issues plagued the Find X9 Pro's teleconvertor plate, which obscured other camera sensors during use. The new plate also lacks features seen in rival Vivo smartphones, such as holes for the other cameras, making it less convenient to switch between modes.

The Oppo Find X10 Pro Max boasts a substantial 7,150mAh silicon carbon battery, a significant upgrade in terms of capacity and efficiency. According to Oppo, this powerful battery can deliver extended usage times, including nearly 25 hours of YouTube streaming and approximately six hours of recording 4K video.

In addition to its impressive battery life, the Find X10 Pro Max also supports fast charging at up to 80W, allowing users to quickly top up their device. However, it's worth noting that wireless charging is only available at 50W, but this can only be achieved with Oppo's proprietary AirVOOC wireless charger.

The phone's performance is driven by MediaTek's 2nm Dimensity 9600 Pro chip, which reportedly offers a significant boost in multi-core power efficiency of up to 61 percent. This upgrade is particularly notable given MediaTek's reputation for producing chips that are often considered sluggish and mediocre.

Fortunately, the Dimensity series appears to have turned things around for the company, with recent releases showing improved performance and efficiency. In everyday use, the Find X10 Pro Max feels responsive, with apps and games loading quickly without any noticeable hiccups or crashes.

The phone's pricing is certainly a point of contention, with an MSRP of £1,499 in the UK, equivalent to around $2,000. This puts it at a higher price point than the Find X9 Ultra at launch, and even £400 more expensive than the Find X9 Pro.

To make up for this premium pricing, Oppo is offering early shoppers a choice of free accessories, including the teleconverter kit, Watch X3 smartwatch, or Pad 5 tablet. Additionally, those who purchase the phone before October 28 will receive an extra £100 discount, while trade-in promotions can offer discounts of up to £250 for Oppo or OnePlus devices.

The Oppo Find X10 Pro Max boasts an impressive triple-camera setup, featuring three 200-megapixel sensors that are likely to capture exceptional images and videos. However, the phone faces stiff competition from its predecessor, the Find X9 Ultra, which in some aspects, has a more capable camera system.

Despite this challenge, the Find X10 Pro Max still offers improved dynamic range capabilities, making it an attractive option for serious smartphone photographers who require advanced features and tools. For those interested in purchasing the device, Oppo is currently offering promotions that can make it more affordable, but it may be wise to wait for the company's ultra" version of the Find X10, which could potentially offer even more impressive capabilities.

Engadget: https://www.engadget.com/2291445/oppo-find-x10-pro-max-hands-on/

Apple has introduced its first folding smartphone, the iPhone Duo, which boasts polished hardware and a unique design feature - a nanotexture finish that cleverly hides the crease on the screen.

Apple has introduced its first folding smartphone, the iPhone Duo, which boasts polished hardware and a unique design feature - a nanotexture finish that cleverly hides the crease on the screen.

The iPhone Duo's dual-screen setup makes multitasking easy, with fun camera features to take advantage of the multiple displays. The device also offers reliable battery life, but its weight is a notable drawback, making it feel heavy in the hand.

One of the main challenges of reviewing the iPhone Duo is that many apps are not yet optimized for its screen sizes and vertical user interface elements. This can result in awkward layouts, with thick black bars on either side of the screen and a phone-sized app in the middle of the display.

However, some popular apps have recently updated to add full support for the iPhone Duo's screen sizes and vertical user interface elements. For example, Instagram, Threads, Slack, and even the Google app now have navigational icons on the right rail instead of the bottom center, with better-laid-out content that takes advantage of the larger screen.

To fully utilize the iPhone Duo's capabilities, developers need to target the iOS 27.1 software development kit (SDK), which will take some time. It is puzzling that some app developers are quick to embrace Apple's foldable design when they have previously shown little interest in optimizing their apps for Android folding phones.

The fact that some app developers are already adapting their apps to work seamlessly on the iPhone Duo's dual screens suggests that the device may help drive innovation and improvements in the world of mobile technology.

The iPhone Duo's design has been refined to perfection, a testament to Apple's dedication to innovation. The device's foldable screen is remarkably smooth and seamless, with a subtle crease that barely registers to the touch. This is due in part to Apple's innovative use of display technology, which includes a matte-finish nanotexture screen that minimizes glare and visual distractions.

The phone's shape has also been carefully considered, with a wider, shorter design that feels more natural in the hand than its predecessors. The 5.4-inch outer screen provides ample space for navigation and interaction, while the hinge glides open and shut with ease.

One area where Apple may have compromised on design is weight, as the iPhone Duo tips the scales at 254 grams - significantly heavier than an iPhone 18 Pro Max. This can make extended use of the device feel tiresome, particularly when combined with the inherent bulk of a foldable phone.

In contrast, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 boasts a remarkably lightweight design, weighing in at just 201 grams. While this may not be a deal-breaker for some users, it does highlight one area where Apple may have fallen short in its pursuit of innovation.

Despite these minor quibbles, the iPhone Duo is undeniably a polished device that exudes quality and attention to detail. From the smooth operation of the hinge to the responsive touchscreen, every aspect of the phone has been carefully considered and refined.

However, some users may find themselves missing certain features available on Android devices. For example, when in split-screen mode, Apple's multitasking experience is tightly controlled, with a strict 50-50 split enforced between apps. This can be limiting for those who prefer more flexibility in their multitasking options.

In portrait orientation, the iPhone Duo also imposes some limitations on users. When trying to split-screen two apps, Apple will not allow stacking of multiple apps - a feature that has been available on Android devices for years. However, video apps are an exception, allowing picture-in-picture mode.

While these restrictions may be frustrating for some users, they do reflect Apple's commitment to streamlining the user experience and minimizing distractions. As such, the iPhone Duo remains a compelling option for those seeking a premium foldable device with seamless integration into the Apple ecosystem.

The iPhone Duo's rigid software philosophy is also evident in its basic input handling capabilities. Despite its advanced features, the device requires users to employ workarounds for certain tasks, such as using a compact folding keyboard with an attached trackpad.

Unfortunately, even this accessory can be finicky - I encountered issues getting the trackpad to function properly until I enabled AssistiveTouch in iOS' accessibility settings. This is ironic given that Apple's own iPads support cursor control natively.

The iPhone Duo also has its share of physical quirks and limitations. For instance, while it supports MagSafe technology for attaching accessories like tripods and mounts, there are some compatibility issues to be aware of.

One such issue arises when using official MagSafe wallets, which can stick out past the phone's lower edge - an aesthetic compromise that may not sit well with design-conscious users. As a result, third-party accessories will likely become popular alternatives.

In terms of camera capabilities, the iPhone Duo features a dual rear-camera system, adhering to industry standards rather than pushing the boundaries set by Apple's Pro iPhones. The latter boast a third zoom camera that I found myself missing during my review period.

Despite this limitation, the selfie cameras on the iPhone Duo performed admirably in my testing, with both the outer screen and under-display inner camera delivering good results. Even on Zoom calls, video quality was deemed "really good" by my editor - although it's worth noting that Zoom wasn't optimized for the device at the time.

The iPhone Duo's ability to multitask is a major strength, thanks in part to its support for multi-pane views and split-screening. When apps are properly optimized, this results in an enhanced productivity experience that showcases the phone's capabilities.

The battery life of these iPhones has been quite impressive so far. Despite heavy use, I've found myself ending most days with a significant amount of charge left over. Even after working extensively on the device throughout the day, it's managed to hold up remarkably well.

One of the standout features of these devices is their dual rear cameras. While they may not offer the same level of flexibility as some other high-end models, such as variable aperture, the results have been surprisingly similar when compared side by side with other iPhones.

The Duo Preview feature has also proven itself to be a valuable addition. By allowing users to share the camera's viewfinder with their subject, it makes taking photos much easier and more convenient. This is particularly useful for those who are often asked to take photos of others, such as family members or friends.

Another innovative feature is Smart Take, which allows users to set up a shot by placing the phone in a partially folded position and tapping the shutter button. The camera will then wait for the user to get into position before taking multiple photos at once. While it may not be as sophisticated as some other features on the market, such as Google's Magic Capture, it is certainly convenient.

The Kids Cue feature has also shown promise. Although I don't have children myself, I can see how this would be a hit with parents who are looking for ways to keep their kids entertained and engaged. By displaying cute animations from Snoopy on the outer display, it provides a fun way to capture a child's attention.

These features, combined with the overall performance of these devices, have made them feel like a solid investment so far. However, there are still some aspects that need to be considered before making a final judgment.

The Duo Preview and Smart Take features demonstrate Apple's commitment to innovation in the smartphone market. By offering unique solutions to common problems, they are setting themselves apart from competitors and providing users with a more streamlined experience.

The nanotexture finish on the inner screen of the iPhone Duo is a notable feature that sets it apart from other devices. This textured surface reduces the visibility of creases and minimizes glare and reflections, creating a more comfortable viewing experience.

One area where the iPhone Duo falls short is in terms of video quality when watching movies and shows on apps like Netflix. While colors are still vibrant, the device lacks the crisp video quality and deep blacks found on the iPhone 18 Pro. However, it's worth noting that screen brightness is not affected by the textured finish.

The textured finish does have some drawbacks, particularly in direct sunlight where off-axis viewing can be less than ideal. Despite this, the Duo still manages to deliver a bright display with peak outdoor brightness reaching up to 3,000 nits.

During my time with the iPhone Duo, I found myself pondering the concept of wasted space on screen. Apple's decision to move navigation elements to the right rail has been met with some criticism, but it seems that certain apps can make better use of this real estate.

Using an app that effectively utilizes the available space on the screen can be a game-changer for users who value productivity and efficiency. However, those who want to try out Apple's first folding phone may want to wait until developers have had time to optimize their apps.

One feature that is being held back until later this year is Reachability, which will allow users with smaller hands to more easily access the left or right edges of the screen. This addition could make a big difference for some users and is just one reason why waiting might be a good idea.

The iPhone Duo's weight has been a point of discussion among reviewers and users alike. While it's not necessarily a deal-breaker, it's worth noting that Apple may address this issue in future versions, much like Samsung did with its latest iteration.

The folding phone phenomenon may not appeal to everyone due to concerns over durability and repairability. A device with more moving parts can be less robust than its single-piece counterpart, which is a significant consideration for some users. While price remains a barrier for others, the Apple iPhone Duo's pricing is surprisingly competitive.

Despite these limitations, the folding phone category seems here to stay, with many enthusiasts swearing by their foldable devices and refusing to switch back to traditional smartphones. The newer passport-style shape of the Duo has even won over some skeptics, but one feature that remains elusive in this format is a high-quality zoom camera.

Wired: https://www.wired.com/review/apple-iphone-duo/

The trend of manufacturers cutting back on memory to preserve profit margins has led to laptops being sold with limited RAM.

A sharp increase in laptop prices has left buyers facing a difficult decision: settle for an 8GB laptop or opt for a higher spec model that may break the bank.

The price hike is particularly evident in Dell's XPS 13, which now starts at $699 with 512GB of storage. However, this is not the only option available - a cheaper variant with 256GB of storage can be had for the same price.

In contrast, Apple's MacBook Neo saw its starting price jump from $599 to $699 in June, along with several other price increases. This trend suggests that manufacturers are struggling to maintain their profit margins due to rising component costs.

According to TrendForce, the bill of materials for a mainstream laptop now consists mainly of CPU, memory, and storage, accounting for 68 percent of the total cost. As a result, it is likely that manufacturers will opt to cut back on memory in an effort to preserve their margins.

The consequence of this trend is that more laptops may be sold with limited RAM, making them less capable and less efficient than higher spec models.

The shift in laptop specifications has been significant over the past two years. In 2024, Microsoft's Copilot+ PC program raised the bar for laptops by requiring a minimum of 16GB of RAM to be labeled as such.

This change was followed by Apple's decision to double the base MacBook Air's RAM from 8GB to 16GB without increasing its price tag in October 2024. Since then, every new Mac model has started at 16GB of RAM.

However, not all manufacturers have adopted this standard. In 2026, Dell brought back its XPS 13 with an 8GB base model, a decision that seems to be driven by the current market trends. Despite having twice the minimum required for running Windows 11, the lowest-end model still struggles with performance.

Our testing of the base model revealed that it had significant issues with memory management. Even after booting up, 80% of its RAM was already committed to invisible processes. This meant that basic tasks like scrolling and switching windows resulted in noticeable hiccups.

The mid-range Dell XPS 13, on the other hand, offers a much smoother experience with its 16GB of RAM. In our tests, it scored about 30% higher in PCMark 10 and lasted an hour and 44 minutes longer in the same battery test compared to the base model.

This highlights the importance of having sufficient RAM for smooth performance. With RAM prices remaining high, it's becoming increasingly difficult for manufacturers to stick to the 16GB minimum. The result is that more laptops may be sold with limited RAM, making them less capable and less efficient than higher-spec models.

The production costs of laptops have been severely impacted by the surge in memory and storage prices. According to TrendForce, memory and storage typically account for around 15 percent of a laptop's overall cost, but this figure is expected to rise significantly.

Intel's budget Wildcat Lake line of processors, used in some low-cost laptops, has only one memory channel, which is shared by the processor and integrated graphics. This limited architecture can further exacerbate performance issues in systems with already restricted RAM capacity.

Samsung's third-quarter operating profit reached a record high of 107.4 trillion won, or approximately $80 billion. A significant portion of this profit, around 110 trillion won, was attributed to memory sales alone, indicating that other sectors may be experiencing losses due to the rising costs of raw materials.

The market has responded to these increased costs by shifting production towards lower-spec models, allowing manufacturers to maintain familiar price points while minimizing losses. Meanwhile, Micron's decision to discontinue its consumer-facing RAM and SSD brand Crucial in February has further reduced supply, contributing to the ongoing surge in RAM prices.

The high cost of RAM has led many manufacturers to opt for base models with limited memory configurations, forcing consumers to pay a premium to upgrade their laptops' performance capabilities.

Dell's XPS 13 is a prime example of this trend, as upgrading from 8GB to 16GB costs an additional $200, pushing the price to $899 even when paired with the standard 256GB storage option.

Meanwhile, Apple has taken a more restrictive approach by eliminating the ability for users to upgrade their MacBook Air's memory. The base model now starts at $1,299 and comes with 16GB of RAM, although it still lags behind its predecessor in terms of baseline storage capacity.

Other manufacturers have also been affected by the shortage, with MSI's Katana 15 HX C14 gaming laptop being one notable exception that allows for older DDR4 memory upgrades. Framework has taken a DIY approach by encouraging buyers to bring their own RAM after significantly increasing the prices of its DDR5 offerings.

Laptops with upgradable memory slots offer consumers more flexibility in managing their storage and performance needs, allowing them to purchase smaller configurations now and upgrade later when prices fall.

As PC manufacturers struggle to keep up with rising costs and dwindling supplies, industry experts predict that prices will continue to climb before eventually stabilizing.

Engadget: https://www.engadget.com/2288833/ram-prices-high-do-not-settle-8-gb-laptop/

A series of unsettling developments across various regions has contributed to the market's woes, including Elice's struggling stock debut and escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Global stock markets have taken a hit following a series of unsettling developments across various regions. In Asia, the market debut of Elice, an AI cloud provider, saw its shares plummet despite raising a modest $150 million in its initial public offering.

The decline in Elice's stock is a stark reminder of investors' lingering skepticism about the potential of artificial intelligence to deliver returns on investment. This unease has been further exacerbated by the recent struggles of several high-profile tech companies, fueling concerns about the broader market.

Meanwhile, tensions in the Middle East have escalated after Saudi Arabia cancelled its Flagship Future Investment Initiative meeting, also known as "Davos in the Desert, following a series of Houthi attacks on the airport in Riyadh. The cancellation has sent shockwaves through financial circles, with several high-profile attendees scheduled to participate.

The recent surge in oil prices to $111 per barrel has further contributed to the market's woes, despite an increase in supply from the Middle East. This uptick in oil prices is likely to have far-reaching consequences for economies around the world, particularly those heavily reliant on imports.

The global economic landscape is facing increasing uncertainty as unrest spreads across major cities in Europe and the Middle East. France's imposition of curfews in key urban areas has added to the sense of unease, with footage on social media depicting chaotic scenes of looting and rioting.

Similar disturbances have also been reported in Milan, Italy, highlighting the growing discontent among citizens in certain regions. Analysts are warning that this unrest could have far-reaching consequences for global economies, particularly those heavily reliant on imports.

Meanwhile, corporate earnings reports continue to pour in, with 46 companies from the S&P 500 having already disclosed their quarterly results. While these companies represent a significant 11% of the index's market capitalization, only 80% were able to exceed analyst expectations, a slight decline from the 88% beat rate seen in Q2.

The overall earnings picture is also looking somewhat subdued, with a reported earnings per share (EPS) figure that falls short of analysts' forecasts by 0.3%. This marks one of the weakest starts to EPS season on record, according to data compiled by Wells Fargo.

In a related development, tech stocks are facing growing headwinds as they prepare for the impact of reduced AI spending on their bottom line. According to analysts at Glenmede, companies that receive capex spending will initially recognize it as revenue, but those that incur the costs of depreciation will eventually see increased expenses reflected in their income statements.

As companies begin to factor these changes into their financial planning, investors are likely to grow increasingly cautious about the outlook for earnings and economic growth. The resulting uncertainty is already starting to weigh on global markets, leading to a sell-off across major indices.

The impact of the current economic trends on corporate profits is becoming increasingly evident. According to Glenmede's estimates, the surge in AI-related spending is expected to boost S&P 500 profits by 9% in 2026.

However, this phenomenon may start to reverse as companies begin to incur significant depreciation costs associated with these investments. By 2028, these costs are likely to become a major earnings headwind for many corporations.

The AI trade has created a stark divide between spenders" and "sellers", with the latter group reaping the benefits of their decisions. Deutsche Bank's Jim Reid notes that tech stocks have been sorting themselves into two distinct categories: those that pay for AI investments and those that receive payments from them.

As a result, companies that have chosen to invest heavily in AI are likely to see their profits rise in the short term, while those that have opted out may benefit later on.

Investments in AI have not yielded significant returns for companies that have bet heavily on this technology. Microsoft's stock has declined by 2%, while Meta and Broadcom have suffered losses of 6% and 15%, respectively.

However, companies that have benefited from these investments are seeing substantial gains. SK hynix and Samsung have seen their stocks rise by over 100%, with TSMC experiencing a gain of 60%.

Fortune: https://fortune.com/2026/10/20/stocks-sell-off-globally-crisis-grips-france-saudi-arabia-cancels-davos-in-the-desert/

Recent models such as the Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 have demonstrated significant strides in foldable technology.

The foldable phone has come a long way since its inception, and recent advancements suggest they may be on the cusp of mainstream acceptance.

Despite initial struggles with size and functionality, manufacturers have continued to push the boundaries of foldable technology. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, for instance, was bulky and awkward in its early days, prompting questions about why someone would carry two phones when one could easily have a decent camera instead.

However, newer models like the Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 demonstrate significant strides forward in foldable technology. These devices showcase improved design and functionality, making them more viable for everyday use.

In addition to these innovations, Apple's entry into the market with its iPhone Duo has generated considerable buzz. This move may signal a turning point for foldables, as it could help bring about greater mainstream acceptance of the technology.

The development of foldable phones has been marked by numerous breakthroughs and setbacks over the years, laying the groundwork for today's more advanced devices.

The introduction of flexible OLED technology in devices marked a significant milestone for foldable phones. This innovation paved the way for the development of more advanced devices that could be easily folded and unfolded. One of the earliest attempts at commercializing this technology was the Royole FlexPai, which made its debut at CES 2019.

The FlexPai's design and functionality generated a lot of buzz, with many hailing it as the world's first commercially available foldable smartphone. However, Engadget's initial review revealed some significant drawbacks to the device. The reviewers noted that the phone was "rough around the edges, had an unusual size, and overall felt janky." Despite these limitations, the FlexPai demonstrated that flexible OLED technology could be integrated into a real product.

A few months after the Royole FlexPai's launch, Samsung entered the foldable market with its Galaxy Fold. Released in February 2019, the phone was touted as a premium device with a price tag to match, just under $2,000. However, the Galaxy Fold's initial release was marred by controversy and criticism.

Many reviewers reported that their phone screens had broken after minimal use, with some even discovering that they had inadvertently removed a layer of plastic serving as a screen protector. This fragility led Samsung to delay the public launch and recall all units sent to reviewers for re-engineering. The revised version was reportedly more durable, but still exhibited some weaknesses.

The issues encountered by the Galaxy Fold highlighted the importance of perfecting key aspects of foldable phone design, specifically, the crease, hinge durability, and screen resistance. These factors would prove crucial in determining the success or failure of subsequent foldable devices.

As the industry continued to evolve, manufacturers began to refine their designs and address the limitations of early foldable phones. The next generation of devices would aim to build upon the progress made by pioneers like Royole and Samsung, pushing the boundaries of what was possible with flexible OLED technology.

The design of foldable phones continued to evolve as manufacturers experimented with different approaches. Huawei's Mate X, unveiled at MWC 2019, took a unique approach by folding outward instead of inward. This single high-resolution display wrapped around the outside of the phone, creating an elegant design. However, this design had its drawbacks, making it vulnerable to scratches and damage.

The Mate X's innovative design was not without controversy, as it was never sold in the United States due to trade sanctions imposed by then-President Donald Trump on Chinese technologies. Nevertheless, Huawei's subsequent foldable, the Mate X2, adopted the inward fold introduced by Royole and Samsung, demonstrating that different designs do not necessarily guarantee success.

The years between 2020 and 2025 saw a surge in foldable phone models from Android manufacturers. Each new release brought significant advancements, contributing to the growing viability of foldable phones as a mainstream option. Despite these efforts, no single model achieved its intended goal of making foldable phones widely accepted by consumers.

Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip was among the first to address the issue of screen protection. In 2020, it introduced ultra-thin glass in the inner screen, enhancing durability. The following year saw the release of the Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3, which boasted IPX8 water resistance. Although dust protection remained a challenge, Samsung's Fold 6 achieved partial IP48 certification.

Meanwhile, manufacturers continued to grapple with another major issue: the crease that formed when the phone was folded. Oppo's 2021 Find N was notable for its near-invisible crease, setting a new standard in this area. Honor followed suit with its Magic V series, which further reduced thickness. Samsung eventually responded with the slim Galaxy Z Fold 7.

As manufacturers pushed the boundaries of foldable technology, the focus shifted from individual innovations to broader design considerations. The development of more robust screens and thinner designs marked significant strides toward making foldable phones a viable option for consumers.

Pricing has been a significant barrier for foldable phones, but recent developments have made them more affordable for consumers. Clamshell designs like the Motorola Razr and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 have helped bring prices down to flagship levels, making foldable phones a more viable option.

The success of these devices suggests that Apple's iPhone Duo has the potential to take foldable phones mainstream. With its sleek design and impressive specs, including a 7.6-inch internal display and a 5.4-inch external display, the iPhone Duo is poised to make a significant impact.

Apple's history of entering markets after initial teething problems have been resolved may be repeating itself with foldable phones. The company waited until the crease issue was addressed before releasing its own model, and it appears that the iPhone Duo has overcome any early hurdles.

The phone's compact design when folded makes it a convenient option for users, while its starting price of $1,999 suggests that Apple is serious about making an impact in this market. Reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, with many considering the iPhone Duo to be one of Apple's most exciting devices in years.

If sales projections are accurate, we may soon see foldable phones become a staple in consumer electronics, with millions of units expected to be sold in 2026 alone. This would mark a significant turning point for foldable technology, making it fashionable and accessible to a wider audience.

Engadget: https://www.engadget.com/2286505/how-modern-foldable-phone-evolved-from-royole-flexpai-to-iphone-duo/

Switching to a new SIM card can be done smoothly if proper precautions are taken.

Switching to a new SIM card is often a straightforward process, but it's still worth taking a minute to ensure everything goes smoothly. This is particularly important if you're switching carriers or opting for a temporary local plan when traveling abroad.

Some users may be tempted to switch SIMs with their phone on, and many modern devices do allow this. However, there are still benefits to turning off your device before making the swap, even if it's just a minor inconvenience.

When removing physical SIM cards from your phone by hand, taking a moment to power down can help prevent any potential issues that might arise during the process. This is especially true if you're in a rush or don't have time to troubleshoot problems later on.

This cautionary approach may seem excessive for such a quick and simple task, but it's always better to err on the side of caution when dealing with technical components like SIM cards.

Before attempting to swap out a physical SIM card, ensure that you have a dual-SIM phone capable of supporting two cards, and verify which SIM you plan to replace.

One advantage of traditional SIM cards is their ease of use with pay-as-you-go accounts, allowing for straightforward installation and activation over the counter. In contrast, some argue that eSIM technology's lack of moving parts makes it superior.

Potential hazards arise when physically replacing a SIM card, primarily due to physical mishaps. Dirt or moisture can be accidentally introduced into the SIM tray, while forcing a larger card into an incorrectly sized slot can also cause issues. A damaged SIM card or incorrect insertion may lead to network connection problems, resulting in battery drain and overheating.

In most cases, exercising caution during the replacement process is sufficient to avoid these potential pitfalls. The phone typically takes a moment to recognize the new SIM and establish a connection, after which it will be ready for use once account setup requirements are met.

When switching to a new SIM card, turning off your phone might not be strictly necessary, but it does provide some benefits in terms of reducing the likelihood of encountering a network error message.

The design of modern phones has made this process easier over time, with SIM trays now located on the outside rather than beneath removable batteries. This change has reduced the need to power down devices in order to access the SIM slot, although early models using this setup still had some issues with network errors when swapping SIMs while the phone was on.

A simpler method for refreshing carrier settings is available, however, and it doesn't require powering off your device completely. By enabling airplane mode, waiting 30 seconds before swapping the SIM, and then turning airplane mode back off once the new card is inserted, users can prevent potential carrier hiccups during the process.

This approach should provide a smoother experience for those switching to a new SIM, although it's worth noting that turning off your phone does offer some benefits in terms of reducing network errors.

For Android devices that still feature a microSD card slot, the process of switching SIM cards can be slightly more complicated due to the shared tray. However, it's essential to unmount the microSD card before removing the SIM to prevent data loss.

To accomplish this on Samsung devices, users need to open the My Files app and find the SD Card, then tap the three-dot menu next to it and choose Unmount. Alternatively, they can search their device's Settings app or consult online documentation for specific instructions tailored to their model.

While switching off your phone may not be necessary when replacing the SIM, using airplane mode instead can help mitigate software-related issues. If a network error does occur after swapping the SIM, restarting your device is usually the first and most effective solution.

Engadget: https://www.engadget.com/2285099/why-turn-off-phone-remove-sim-card-explained/

The latest Samsung tablets were released before the company adopted its more generous software support policy.

Samsung's latest tablets were released before the company adopted its more generous software support policy.

This shift towards longer software support is a significant improvement from Samsung's past reputation for delayed or inconsistent updates.

The Galaxy Tab S9 series was launched in 2023 with One UI 5.1, which is based on Android 13. As part of Samsung's commitment to four major OS updates and five years of security patches, these tablets are due for their final major software update next year.

The upcoming One UI 9 update will bring the Galaxy Tab S9 series in line with the latest version of Android, although it will be based on Android 17 rather than the current 13.

The Galaxy Tab S8 series has reached the end of its major operating system upgrade cycle, with One UI 8 being the final major update for these devices. This update is based on Android 16 and was released in February 2022. The tablets will continue to receive security updates until February 2027.

Not all older Samsung tablets have been as fortunate, however. The Galaxy Tab A9 series has also reached its final major OS upgrade with One UI 8, despite being released only a year after the S8 series. This is likely due to the fact that the A9 models were positioned as budget offerings by Samsung.

Newer devices from Samsung offer longer software support cycles, which should provide users with more peace of mind when purchasing a tablet. The Galaxy Tab S10 series, launched in 2024, was one of the first to benefit from this seven-year policy. This commitment has been carried over to subsequent models, including the Galaxy Tab S11 and S12.

The budget-friendly Galaxy Tab A11 and A11+ devices, released in 2025, have also been included under Samsung's extended software support policy, which guarantees Android and security updates for a period of seven years.

Samsung's Galaxy Tab Active lineup offers rugged tablets designed primarily for business and enterprise customers. These devices have different software update policies compared to other Samsung tablets.

The Galaxy Tab Active5, released in 2024, comes with a four-year commitment to Android OS updates and five years of security updates. Since it shipped with Android 14, it is expected to receive updates up to Android 18, with security patches continuing until 2029.

Not all Samsung devices receive OS updates simultaneously, as rollout schedules vary depending on the tablet's model and region. Users can check for available updates by navigating to Settings > Software update > Download and install , where they should tap Install now if a pending update is detected.

Engadget: https://www.engadget.com/2284679/samsung-galaxy-tablets-last-year-software-support/

The lack of affordable battery replacements is a significant barrier to adopting a more sustainable approach to smartphone ownership, with tech companies failing to offer cheap alternatives.

Global smartphone prices have surged by an estimated 20 percent since the start of the year due to sharply inflated memory costs. This price hike is being passed on to consumers, forcing them to either hold onto their devices for longer or opt for refurbished phones.

The lack of affordable battery replacements remains a significant barrier to adopting a more sustainable approach to smartphone ownership. Tech companies are largely failing to offer cheap alternatives, making it difficult for people to upgrade their batteries rather than replacing entire handsets.

Apple is one company that has been criticized for its expensive battery replacement prices. For the newest Pro model, Apple charges $129 for an out-of-warranty battery service, which is a premium price compared to other repair options.

The cost of replacing iPhone batteries varies depending on the device and its age. The 2020 iPhone 12, for example, costs $89 to replace, while the Duo battery is priced at $229. These prices are in line with those charged by Apple's competitors.

Samsung, another major smartphone manufacturer, also charges high prices for out-of-warranty battery replacements. While the company does not prominently list its replacement costs on its website, reports suggest that consumers can expect to pay between $99 and $129 if they go directly through Samsung.

Many phone manufacturers are offering extended warranty plans that include included battery replacements, but these packages need to be signed up for shortly after purchasing a device. An alternative option is iFixit, which offers DIY repair kits for modern phones, although not all devices are designed to be easily user-repairable.

Historically, Apple has charged lower prices for out-of-warranty battery replacements. In 2018, following a public scandal involving iPhone throttling, the company drastically reduced its pricing in the US to just $29 for a full year.

This move had a significant impact on sales, with reportedly 11 million battery swaps taking place in 2018 alone. Before that year, Apple averaged around 1-2 million battery swaps annually. The price cut was part of an effort to address customer dissatisfaction and boost confidence in the brand.

However, it appears that customers took advantage of the reduced pricing by opting for cheaper repairs rather than upgrading their devices. In January 2019, then-CEO Tim Cook cited this as a factor contributing to Apple's revenue shortfall, although he attributed the majority of the decline to external factors such as economic slowdowns in China.

The price of phone batteries has become increasingly relevant given rising costs across the industry. On the same day Apple announced its latest iPhone models, it also increased the prices of older iPhones by $100. This move was followed shortly after by Samsung's decision to hike prices on most of its S26 phones by $100.

The trend of increasing prices is not limited to flagship devices. Even mid-range phones are being affected, with Samsung's FE line seeing a significant price jump at launch. The newest model in this series, the S26 FE, costs more than its predecessors despite offering only modest upgrades.

As phone prices continue to rise, it becomes increasingly important for consumers to consider repair options rather than upgrading or replacing their devices outright. With battery shortages becoming a growing concern, tech companies may need to revisit their pricing strategies and offer affordable replacement options to maintain customer loyalty and satisfaction.

American consumers are facing a stark reality: despite rising paychecks, their purchasing power is dwindling. Since January 2018, consumer prices have surged by approximately 34 percent, leaving each dollar to buy roughly a quarter less than it did then.

The disparity between nominal and real wages has become increasingly apparent. While average hourly earnings for private-sector employees rose from $26.72 to $29.91 by December 2020, representing an 11.9 percent increase, the Consumer Price Index climbed 5.3 percent during the same period. This results in a modest real gain of about 6.3 percent.

However, this average masks the struggles faced by many workers. A recent analysis by the Pew Research Center revealed that median weekly wages, adjusted for inflation, decreased around 3.2 percent between December 2020 and December 2025. Moreover, real hourly earnings have dropped to approximately 1 percent below their December 2020 level.

As inflation outpaces pay, consumers are left grappling with reduced purchasing power. In August, real hourly earnings were down 0.3 percent from the previous year's levels, highlighting the pressing need for relief.

The memory crunch has also exposed a concerning trend among tech companies: prioritizing profitability over affordability. Apple and Samsung have increased prices above inflation rates, leaving consumers to bear the brunt of rising costs.

The ongoing memory shortage has sparked renewed calls for tech companies to make affordable battery replacements available to consumers. This move would not only be a sustainability-driven initiative but also a practical solution to help mitigate the financial burden on customers.

Device manufacturers should consider offering cheap out-of-warranty battery replacements until the supply of memory chips catches up with demand, predicted to happen by 2030.

Engadget: https://www.engadget.com/2288908/if-memory-shortages-last-tech-companies-should-offer-cheap-battery-replacements/

Apple has made its long-awaited entry into the foldable smartphone market with the iPhone Duo, generating significant buzz before it even hits stores.

Apple has made its long-awaited entry into the foldable smartphone market with the iPhone Duo, generating significant buzz before it even hits stores.

The foldables segment has been dominated by Android devices, but Apple's new offering is more than just a copycat of Samsung's Galaxy Fold 8 and Google's Pixel Fold. Instead, it appears to have taken cues from these designs, adopting a shorter and wider format that contrasts with the taller folding phone designs seen in some other models.

One key aspect of the iPhone Duo's design is its departure from traditional tall folding phone formats. This has led some to speculate about who the device might be suited for. While it may not appeal to photography enthusiasts or those seeking top-notch battery life, available in newer iPhone models like the 18 Pro Max.

The iPhone Duo appears to occupy a unique space in Apple's lineup, catering to customers with specific needs and preferences. Those who value Apple's signature polish and are willing to sacrifice some features in exchange for a distinctive design may find the Duo appealing.

As we continue to explore the iPhone Duo's capabilities and features, it becomes clear that this device is not simply an iOS version of existing foldable smartphones. Instead, it offers a distinct blend of style, functionality, and Apple's renowned attention to detail.

The iPhone Duo's intended audience is a matter of debate among tech enthusiasts and industry insiders. While some may assume that the device is geared towards casual users or those looking for a more affordable option, there are several groups that are likely to be drawn to this foldable phone.

One such group consists of Apple fans who have been eagerly awaiting the company's first foray into the world of foldables. These enthusiasts will likely overlook any potential drawbacks associated with being an early adopter and instead focus on being among the first to experience the latest innovation from Cupertino.

However, not everyone will be so willing to take the plunge with a first-generation device. Many consumers tend to wait until subsequent versions have ironed out any kinks before making a purchase, preferring to avoid the potential headaches that can come with early adoption.

On the other hand, there are some individuals who will not be deterred by the Duo's status as a pioneering product. Power users and tech aficionados often take pride in being among the first to try new gadgets, and they will likely be eager to get their hands on the iPhone Duo regardless of any potential drawbacks.

The device is particularly well-suited for those who want an iPad-like experience in a more portable form factor. With its ability to resize apps side by side, users can enjoy a seamless multitasking experience that's similar to what you'd find on an iPad, but with the added convenience of being able to carry it around in your pocket.

The iPhone Duo's larger inner screen makes it an attractive option for professionals who need to multitask on their mobile devices. Editing complex spreadsheets or documents is significantly easier on this wider display compared to even the largest iPhones.

This device also has a certain appeal to those who value style and status, as Apple products are often associated with exclusivity and luxury. Celebrities and content creators may be eager to showcase the iPhone Duo in public, leveraging its high-end reputation to enhance their personal brand.

Avid readers might find the iPhone Duo an ideal e-reader size, offering a convenient and portable way to enjoy books without being limited by dedicated e-readers like Amazon's Kindle. The App Store provides access to a wide range of reading apps beyond just Amazon's offerings.

The flexibility and power of iOS, combined with the A20 Pro chip, make this device a compelling alternative to traditional e-readers. While it may be an expensive option for replacing a Kindle, the iPhone Duo's style, form, and functionality could justify the investment for some users.

The iPhone Duo's versatility extends beyond reading apps, offering a range of features that cater to professionals and style-conscious individuals alike. Its ability to seamlessly integrate with other Apple devices only adds to its appeal as a premium mobile device.

The iPhone Duo's high price point and potential durability issues make it less suitable for those prioritizing camera features, battery life, and ruggedness. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is a more practical option in this regard.

While the iPhone Duo offers luxurious style and impressive engineering, its hefty price tag means that only a small percentage of new phone buyers will opt for it. This device essentially costs as much as purchasing an iPhone 18 Pro and an iPad together.

Ultimately, potential customers need to carefully weigh the compromises involved with owning a foldable device like the iPhone Duo before making a purchase decision.

CNET: https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/who-is-iphone-duo-apple-foldable-for/

The lifespan of a smart TV is now influenced by its operating system and apps, which require regular updates to ensure optimal performance and security.

Smart TV owners have a valid concern when it comes to software support, as not all manufacturers offer long-term updates for their devices.

The lifespan of a smart TV is no longer just determined by its hardware, but also by its operating system and apps, which require regular updates to ensure optimal performance and security.

Unlike traditional TVs where the only worry was mechanical failure, modern smart TVs come with complex software that needs periodic maintenance, including patches to address potential security issues.

Researching a manufacturer's support policy can be a daunting task, as there is no standardized approach to software update durations among TV makers.

Samsung has set a precedent by committing to provide seven years of software updates for its Linux-based Tizen OS on 2024 and later models, as well as select 2023 models.

LG's webOS Re:New program has introduced a new standard for software support in smart TVs. Launched in early 2024, this initiative promises four years of webOS updates for TVs from 2022 onwards. However, there's a catch - these updates come with a one-year delay compared to the latest webOS release on the newest TV models.

This means that if a new version of webOS is released with the latest TVs in a given year, older models will have to wait until the following year to receive the update. For instance, when webOS 26 debuted with 2026's TVs, it took a year for this software to reach 2025 TV models.

Unlike LG, Sony doesn't offer fixed periods of support for its TVs. Instead, the duration of support varies depending on the model in question. Some Sony Bravia TVs have specific end-of-life dates listed on their support pages. For example, the Sony Bravia K-65XR80M2 OLED has an end-of-life date set at April 2029.

Sony's reliance on Google TV for its newer models and Android TV for older ones adds another layer of complexity to its software support strategy. In contrast to LG and Samsung, which use proprietary operating systems, Sony's TVs run on third-party platforms. This could potentially affect the speed and scope of software updates provided by the company.

TCL also doesn't guarantee fixed periods of support, instead claiming that it typically provides security updates for at least two years after a device model's initial shipment. While this may seem like a commitment to ongoing support, the company's language is deliberately vague - it doesn't explicitly mention TVs on its Software Security page.

Hisense's European dominance is largely due to its proprietary VIDAA OS, which powers the majority of its TVs on the continent. This operating system has a notable advantage when it comes to software support, with Hisense pledging to provide updates for up to eight years from 2025 onwards.

However, things are different in the US market, where many Hisense TVs run on third-party platforms such as Android TV, Fire TV, Google TV, or Roku TV. As a result, long-term support is ultimately at the mercy of these external operating systems and their respective manufacturers.

Roku's own line of Pro, Plus, and Select Series TVs offers an interesting case study in software support. While these models don't come with a fixed period of support from the company, it's worth noting that Roku prioritizes software updates and frequently pushes out new features to its devices.

The ultra-affordable TV brands, such as Vizio and Insignia, also offer their own operating systems, with Vizio OS being one notable example. This platform includes over 300 apps and receives regular automatic firmware updates from the manufacturer, but it's worth noting that Vizio does not guarantee a fixed period of support for any of its models.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding software support for these budget-friendly brands, their focus on providing a seamless viewing experience through regular updates is undeniable. This has led some users to rely on these TVs for extended periods, with some even reporting successful usage beyond the 10-year mark.

Insignia TVs run on Amazon's Fire OS, which means they will continue to receive software and security updates as long as Amazon supports its own devices. According to Amazon's website, the company commits to providing these updates for at least four years.

Buying a streaming box is an affordable option to extend the life of your Insignia TV and keep access to updated versions of popular apps, making it easy to continue enjoying a seamless viewing experience even after your model falls out of support.

Engadget: https://www.engadget.com/2282502/smart-tv-brands-offer-longest-software-support/

A closer look at Silicon Valley reveals that many facilities powering tech companies' success are located elsewhere, including semiconductor fabrication plants.

Silicon Valley's tech giants have made the region synonymous with innovation and wealth, but a closer look at its physical landscape reveals a surprising truth: many of the facilities that power these companies' success are located elsewhere.

The lack of chip manufacturing facilities in Silicon Valley is particularly striking, given the area's rich history of technological breakthroughs. Today, most semiconductor fabrication plants are situated overseas or outside the state, leaving the region's low-slung buildings and office parks looking decidedly unimpressive.

A major exception to this trend is Applied Materials, the world's leading provider of chipmaking equipment. The company has just unveiled its new EPIC semiconductor research and development facility, a massive undertaking that will serve as a hub for innovation in the industry.

The EPIC center, located at Applied Materials' Sunnyvale campus, is an impressive sight to behold. Spanning 600,000 square feet, it dwarfs its surroundings with its sleek glass, concrete, and steel design, equivalent to two Eiffel Towers' worth of steel, according to the company.

The facility's bold vision is to bring together top chip industry players under one roof, including Intel, TSMC, Micron, SK Hynix, and Samsung. Each partner will have teams on-site working alongside Applied Materials engineers to develop cutting-edge microprocessors and memory chips, with access to the latest equipment from the company.

The massive investment by Applied Materials is set to transform the landscape of semiconductor equipment research and development, with a total capital outlay expected to reach $5 billion when the project is complete.

The sheer scale of the EPIC facility is staggering, covering an area equivalent to three football fields, which will be dedicated to the creation of clean rooms where researchers can work on etching microscopic circuits into silicon wafers.

Competing companies such as Micron and SK Hynix will have their own private test facilities within the complex, equipped with cutting-edge chipmaking gear that they will use in collaboration with Applied Materials engineers to drive innovation forward.

Having innovators working together in close proximity is seen as a game-changer by industry insiders, allowing for earlier access to new technologies that can enable breakthroughs in AI architecture development.

The time it takes to develop each new generation of chip architectures is expected to be significantly reduced, cutting the typical 10-12 year timeframe down to just six years through the collaborative efforts at EPIC.

By enabling researchers to identify what's technically feasible earlier on in the process, the chances of breakthroughs increase while reducing the number of dead ends that can occur when companies work independently.

The recent breakthrough by Chinese memory maker CXMT in memory chip density has sent shockwaves through the industry, potentially allowing them to produce more power-efficient memory chips than their competitors Samsung and SK Hynix.

This achievement could have significant implications for the global semiconductor market, as it would give CXMT a competitive edge over its South Korean rivals. The news of this breakthrough sent shares of both companies plummeting by around 7% and 10% respectively in South Korea.

The development also highlights the ongoing tensions between the US and China in the field of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI). The US government has imposed restrictions on the sale of advanced chipmaking equipment to China, aiming to limit its ability to develop AI models that could surpass those created by American companies like OpenAI and Google.

Despite these restrictions, Applied Materials continues to play a crucial role in the global semiconductor industry. Founded as a chemistry supply company in 1967, it has grown into the world's largest provider of chipmaking equipment, benefiting from the recent surge in demand driven by the AI boom.

The AI boom has had a profound impact on the semiconductor market, leading to a shortage of memory chips and driving up prices. Companies like Applied Materials have been at the forefront of this trend, with their shares increasing by over 110% in the past year alone.

In August, the company reported quarterly revenue of $9.12 billion, representing a 25% increase from the same period last year. With visibility into customer demand as far out as 2030, Applied Materials is well-positioned to continue riding the wave of growth driven by the AI revolution.

The AI revolution has created a surge in demand for semiconductors, prompting concerns about overinvestment by chipmakers and equipment manufacturers if market conditions change.

Dickerson's confidence in sustained growth is fueled by the rapid development of new products and services leveraging AI capabilities, which he believes will drive increased demand for improved chip performance and power efficiency. According to him, this inflection point is unparalleled in his lifetime, with a pace that shows no signs of slowing down.

Fortune: https://fortune.com/2026/10/13/applied-materials-advanced-ai-chips-epic-semiconductor-silicon-valley/

When shopping for an affordable Android phone, it's essential to prioritize features that meet your daily needs. A subpar device can quickly become frustrating and limit its usability.

When shopping for an affordable Android phone, it's essential to prioritize features that meet your daily needs. A subpar device can quickly become frustrating and limit its usability.

One crucial consideration is the amount of RAM a phone has. Insufficient memory can lead to slow performance, making everyday tasks like browsing the web or checking email cumbersome. While you may not need a top-of-the-line processor, a minimum of 3GB of RAM is recommended for smooth performance.

Another critical aspect is battery life. A phone that runs out of power quickly can be a major inconvenience, especially if you're on-the-go. Look for devices with large batteries and efficient processors to ensure all-day use without needing to recharge.

When evaluating cameras, it's essential to consider the type of content you plan to create. While decent cameras are sufficient for casual messaging, more demanding users may require higher-quality imaging capabilities. A minimum of 12-megapixel resolution is recommended for most users.

In addition to these key features, screen size and quality should also be taken into account. A small or low-resolution display can make viewing content unpleasant, so opt for a phone with a decent-sized screen and high pixel density.

A decent screen size is essential for a comfortable viewing experience on an Android phone. A minimum of 5.6 inches is recommended, but many modern phones have screens that are at least 6.1 inches in size. This allows users to easily hold the phone and type with both hands while still being able to see content clearly.

The screen itself should also be of high quality, featuring an AMOLED panel with HD resolution and a peak brightness of at least 1,000 nits. This ensures that the display remains viewable even in direct sunlight.

Memory is another crucial factor to consider when purchasing an Android phone. A minimum of 6GB RAM is recommended to ensure smooth performance while multitasking, streaming videos, or playing casual games. However, if you're a heavy gamer, it's worth considering 8GB of RAM for optimal performance.

In terms of storage, look for a phone with expandable memory options, but if not available, 128GB should be the minimum capacity to consider. For added peace-of-mind, opting for at least 256GB will prevent the dreaded "phone full" message and the need for cloud storage subscriptions.

When it comes to performance, a phone's processor plays a crucial role in determining how smoothly it runs. While you may not need the latest and greatest processor on the market, it's essential to ensure that your device can handle everyday tasks without lagging behind.

A phone with an outdated or underpowered processor can quickly become frustrating to use, especially when streaming video or engaging in resource-intensive activities like gaming. It's worth doing some research to determine the age of the processor and reading reviews from other users to get a sense of its performance capabilities.

In terms of battery life, a minimum capacity of 4,500mAh is sufficient for most users, but 5,000mAh is now considered a more desirable starting point, especially if your phone handles heavy AI processing tasks. This will help ensure that you can use your device throughout the day without needing to recharge.

When it comes to cameras, a phone with at least a 32MP rear sensor is a good minimum requirement for taking photos that are suitable for sharing on social media or keeping as memories. However, a larger sensor size is also important for capturing more light and producing better overall image quality.

When shopping for an Android phone on a tight budget, it's essential to consider more than just the price tag. In addition to the camera capabilities mentioned earlier, look for devices with NFC technology for seamless tap-to-pay transactions and recent Bluetooth versions for uninterrupted connectivity to headphones and speakers.

Even older models can be viable options if they still receive regular software and security updates. Brands like Samsung, Nothing, and Motorola offer a range of devices that fit this criteria, including their mid-range phones. These devices often pack impressive features at an affordable price point.

For those willing to wait for seasonal promotions, it's possible to find a high-end phone with all the necessary features at budget-friendly prices. For instance, renewed Google Pixel 8a models can be found for under $300, offering top-notch performance and advanced capabilities.

Engadget: https://www.engadget.com/2281663/android-phone-dont-buy-cheap-without-non-negotiable-features/

The decline in smartphone sales is a continuation of a months-long trend, with a significant slump of 20% in the third quarter of 2026.

Smartphone shipments have hit a new low, marking the lowest number since 2012. The decline in smartphone sales is a continuation of a months-long trend, with a significant slump of 20% in the third quarter of 2026.

The primary cause behind this downturn can be attributed to the ongoing RAMageddon memory shortage. This shortage has led to a substantial increase in the cost of DRAM and NAND, the two main memory chips used in smartphones, computers, and data centers. As a result, manufacturers are forced to raise phone prices, contributing to an overall price hike of 20% this year.

The rise in memory costs is largely due to its limited availability, driven by the massive buildup of AI infrastructure that demands vast amounts of these chips. This trend has been exacerbated by companies investing heavily in AI technology, with estimates suggesting they will spend $1.4 trillion on AI infrastructure alone this year and a staggering $2.6 trillion overall.

The severe memory shortage is taking its toll on phone sales, with the second consecutive quarter being severely impacted. Analysts believe that global fears about rising inflation are also playing a significant role in suppressing demand for smartphones, further contributing to the decline in shipments.

The latest batch of smartphones has failed to boost sales, as global shipments reached an all-time low in the third quarter.

Some manufacturers managed to hold on to market share despite the decline, however. Samsung's market presence grew from 19% last year to 23% this year, thanks in part to strong initial demand for its Galaxy Fold 8 model. Apple also saw a significant gain, with its market share reaching 22%, marking the first time it has surpassed 20% in a single quarter.

However, both Samsung and Apple suffered year-over-year declines in shipments, despite their improved market shares. It's clear that the smartphone industry is facing tough times, with consumers becoming increasingly cautious about spending on new devices.

The trend of rising prices for smartphones shows no signs of slowing down. In recent weeks, Samsung has increased the price of its Galaxy S26 phones by $100, while Apple's latest iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models were launched last month at a higher price point than their predecessors.

As the latest smartphone releases hit the market, including Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8, as well as Google's Pixel 11 and Apple's iPhone 18 Pro line, analysts are warning that high prices will continue to deter consumers from buying new devices.

A recent survey by Counterpoint Research found that consumers are increasingly holding off on buying new smartphones until holiday sales kick in. The study, which polled respondents across several countries including the US, UK, India, China, and Germany, revealed that nearly half of those surveyed would wait for discounts before making a purchase.

The trend is even more pronounced among younger consumers, with 56% of Gen Z respondents planning to delay their phone upgrades until holiday sales arrive. This shift in consumer behavior has significant implications for the industry, with manufacturers potentially turning to refurbished devices and other alternatives to stay competitive.

As AI investment continues to strain memory supply, it's clear that phone prices will remain high for the foreseeable future. With companies focusing on premium devices and fewer budget options emerging, consumers may need to be even more patient, or consider alternative purchasing strategies, if they're looking for an affordable new smartphone.

CNET: https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/smartphone-shipments-q3-2026-counterpoint-research/

The Fitbit Edge offers a balance between features and price, falling somewhere in the middle of Google's wearable lineup.

Google has unveiled a new smartwatch that may appeal to those who want something more than a basic fitness tracker but don't need a full-fledged smartphone on their wrist.

The Fitbit Edge is priced at $179 and offers a balance between features and price, falling somewhere in the middle of the company's wearable lineup. It boasts a color screen, built-in GPS, and various health sensors, similar to what you'd find in more expensive smartwatches.

In terms of design, the Edge is notable for its slim and lightweight profile, which allows it to last up to a week on a single charge. This makes it an attractive option for those who want a smartwatch that won't weigh them down or require constant recharging.

The concept behind the Fitbit Edge isn't new; previous models like the Inspire and Charge have paired simple screens with health and fitness tracking capabilities, working seamlessly with both iOS and Android devices. However, this latest release represents an evolution of these ideas, combining features from across Google's wearable lineup.

The Fitbit Edge is available for preorder on Monday and will go on sale on October 27, giving potential buyers a chance to experience it firsthand and determine whether it hits the sweet spot in terms of form and function.

The Fitbit Edge's display is a major upgrade over its predecessor, boasting a 1.34-inch color AMOLED screen that's 46% larger than what's found in the Charge 6.

This expanded display also comes with an always-on option, allowing users to keep track of essential information without having to manually turn it on every time.

The Edge's design is also notable for its sleek and modern aesthetic, which draws inspiration from other popular smartwatches like the Air and Pixel Watch 5.

The device will be available in a range of stylish color combinations, including Obsidian, Fog, Olive, and Canyon, with interchangeable options such as a performance loop, magnetic band, and metal links.

A special edition model featuring basketball legend Stephen Curry is also being offered, but it comes at an additional $50 cost.

The Fitbit Edge has a few notable omissions compared to other smartwatches on the market. Notably, it lacks a built-in microphone and speaker, which means users can't take calls directly from their wrist.

In terms of health and fitness tracking, the Edge draws heavily from the company's expertise in this area. It features built-in GPS and an altimeter, allowing for more accurate distance tracking during outdoor activities. This is a departure from the Fitbit Air, which relies on a connected phone for GPS data.

The Edge also boasts advanced heart rate monitoring capabilities, with Google claiming that its readings are 40% more accurate than those of the Charge 6. This increased accuracy could be particularly useful for athletes or individuals who rely on precise heart rate data during exercise.

During workouts, users can view metrics like pace and heart rate zones directly on their wrist, a feature that was notably absent from the Fitbit Air. Additionally, the Edge allows users to broadcast live heart rate data to compatible exercise equipment, providing an added layer of functionality for gym-goers.

The Edge comes equipped with three months of Google Health Premium, which unlocks features like AI-powered coaching and advanced health trend tracking. This includes monthly blood pressure and insulin resistance monitoring through Health Guardian, a feature that will also be rolled out to the Fitbit Air at some point in the future.

The Fitbit Edge's battery life is a significant advantage over other smartwatches on the market. According to Google, the device can last up to seven days on a single charge when using the raise to wake setting. However, this estimate drops to two days if you prefer an always-on display.

This discrepancy highlights one of the key trade-offs for users who want an always-on display. While having a screen that's constantly visible may be convenient, it comes at the cost of reduced battery life. For some users, this might not be a deal-breaker, but for others, it could be a significant consideration.

The charging time for the Fitbit Edge is also worth noting. A full charge takes around 90 minutes, which can be a drawback for users who need to recharge their device quickly. On the other hand, five minutes on the charger gets you about a day's worth of battery life, making it possible to top up your device when you're in a hurry.

One potential benefit of the Fitbit Edge is its compatibility with other devices. Google has confirmed that users can seamlessly switch between the Edge and other Fitbit devices, such as the Air, without disrupting their health data. This could make it easier for users to choose the right device for each situation, rather than being tied to a single model.

The Fitbit Edge has made a significant design change by incorporating a user-replaceable battery, allowing users to extend its lifespan and reduce electronic waste.

This move towards repairability is in line with Google's own approach, as seen with the Pixel Watch 4, which was redesigned without adhesives to facilitate easier repairs. Even those who consider themselves novice DIY enthusiasts can attempt repairs on certain devices.

The use of a replaceable battery could be particularly beneficial for smaller and less expensive trackers like the Edge, where battery degradation over time is more noticeable. This change can help users get more value out of their device and reduce the need for frequent replacements.

While the $179 price tag may seem steep compared to other Fitbit models, such as the Air, it's actually a relatively affordable option when considering more advanced smartwatches like the Pixel Watch or Samsung's Galaxy Watch. The Edge offers a range of features that are typically found in higher-end devices.

For those who prioritize fitness tracking and don't require additional features like contactless payments, the Edge may be an attractive choice at this price point. It provides a balance between capabilities and cost, making it a viable option for users who want more than basic functionality but aren't ready to commit to a premium smartwatch.

Ultimately, the Fitbit Edge's unique combination of features and repairability makes it a compelling option for those looking for a device that can adapt to their changing needs without breaking the bank.

CNET: https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/fitbit-edge-google-first-look/

The Vivo X Fold 6 boasts a vibrant blue color scheme and frosted glass back, with a book-style design reminiscent of other foldables on the market.

Vivo's new foldable smartphone, the X Fold 6, has caught my attention not just for its impressive features but also for its striking design. The phone boasts a vibrant blue color scheme with a frosted glass back that I have to admit is my favorite aspect of this device.

The X Fold 6's appearance is reminiscent of other foldables on the market, such as Oppo's Find N6 and Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. These devices share similar book-style designs, which may soon become a thing of the past with Apple's recent introduction of its iPhone Duo with its distinct "passport" dimensions.

The trend towards wider internal dimensions is evident in many foldables, including Samsung's Z Fold 8 and Xiaomi's 18 Fold, both of which were showcased at IFA 2026. This design choice allows for a more immersive viewing experience when watching videos on the phone's inner screen.

As it stands, the X Fold 6 has not been officially released in major markets such as the US or UK, making it challenging to obtain this device through official channels. Those interested in purchasing the phone may be forced to rely on resellers from China or certain parts of Europe where it is available.

The lack of customer support for imported devices is a significant concern, and I would advise against attempting to purchase the X Fold 6 through unofficial means. This highlights the difficulties faced by consumers when trying to access innovative products that are not widely available in their region.

The X Fold 6's design is notable not just for its folding screen but also for its more traditional layout when closed. In this mode, it has a solid feel to it and doesn't appear too bulky despite being slightly thicker than some of its competitors. The phone's dimensions make it easy to slip into a pocket without any issues.

The device runs on last year's MediaTek Dimensity 9500 processor, which delivered respectable benchmark scores in our tests. Gaming and multitasking were also handled smoothly by the X Fold 6, suggesting that its performance is more than capable of keeping up with demanding tasks.

One of the standout features of the X Fold 6's camera setup is its 200 megapixel sensor, paired with high-quality Zeiss glass to produce impressive results. However, it's worth noting that Vivo watermarks are enabled by default on this phone and need to be manually disabled in the settings.

The longer focal lengths on the X Fold 6 rely heavily on AI-based image processing, which can sometimes result in over-processing of fine details. This gives photos a slightly stylized appearance, but it's not uncommon for modern smartphones to employ similar techniques.

In terms of overall camera performance, the X Fold 6 holds its own particularly well considering that foldable phones often have compromised camera setups compared to their non-folding counterparts. The phone seems to strike a good balance between image quality and design constraints.

The Vivo X Fold 6's battery life has been a standout feature in our testing, and it's not hard to see why. After streaming YouTube on its large inner screen at maximum brightness for an hour, we were surprised to find that the phone hadn't dropped a single percent - it was still at full capacity.

However, this impressive performance wasn't just a one-off occurrence. Even after another hour of heavy usage, the battery had only dropped to 94%. This level of endurance is right up there with some of the best we've seen in any device this year, including the iPhone 18 Pro.

If you're worried about running out of juice, don't be - the X Fold 6's battery life should easily see you through a full day of mixed use. And if you do find yourself in a hurry, the phone's 80-watt wired charging capabilities will quickly top up your power levels, getting you back to full capacity in around 30 minutes.

One area where the X Fold 6 doesn't quite excel is in terms of innovative design features - it's not particularly slim or powerful, and its foldable crease isn't entirely invisible. However, as a high-end device that ticks all the right boxes, it's still an impressive achievement.

Ultimately, the Vivo X Fold 6 is a great example of what can be achieved with careful engineering and attention to detail - but unfortunately, it's not likely to be available to most readers due to its exclusivity.

CNET: https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/vivo-x-fold-6-blue-color-design-review/
