# Google Expands Fitbit Features with New Health Insights

Google has introduced new health insights for users of the Fitbit Air and Edge devices as part of its Health Guardian suite.

Google has expanded its Fitbit features, introducing new health insights for users of the Fitbit Air and Edge devices. The updates are part of Google's Health Guardian suite, designed to provide proactive safety tools for both Pixel Watch and Fitbit owners.

The new features include the ability to track blood pressure trends without requiring a traditional cuff, as well as monitoring pulse rates during sleep or wakefulness. Additionally, users will have access to insights into their metabolic health, although this does not involve direct measurement of insulin or glucose levels.

To derive these insights, Google's algorithm analyzes a range of metrics including heart rate, activity level, and sleep patterns. This data is then used to identify changes in metabolic health over time. Users who meet the eligibility criteria will find these features available within the Health tab of their Fitbit app.

The new features are exclusively available to users with a Google Health Premium subscription, which costs $100 annually. In return for this fee, subscribers gain access to advanced sleep tracking and a broader selection of health-tracking capabilities beyond those offered by standard devices.

Eligible users who have worn their device for at least five days will be able to view the new insights in the Health tab of their app, providing them with a more detailed understanding of their overall health.

The new feature uses machine learning algorithms to analyze a user's biometric data, such as heart rate and skin conductance, in addition to demographic information. This multimodal approach enables the device to assess metabolic patterns without requiring direct access to blood glucose levels.

Fitbit users who exhibit elevated insulin resistance will receive notifications prompting them to take further action. Furthermore, users can integrate their Abbott continuous glucose monitors into the Google Health app for enhanced glucose monitoring capabilities.

The development of this feature marks a significant step towards achieving non-invasive glucose tracking, although it falls short of the accuracy offered by traditional continuous glucose monitors. Nonetheless, the multimodal model demonstrates progress in leveraging wearable data to inform health insights.

Google's decision to expand these Health Guardian features beyond its flagship Pixel Watches makes the technology more accessible to budget-conscious users who own lower-end Fitbit models. This move could potentially reach a broader audience with varying healthcare needs and financial constraints.

The concept of non-invasive glucose monitoring has been around for years, and many tech companies have been racing to develop their own versions. This technology would allow people to track their blood sugar levels without having to prick their fingers.

Google appears to be making significant strides in this area by incorporating insulin resistance trends into its latest Fitbit devices. This feature uses algorithmic AI, rather than needles and blood, which brings the company closer to developing a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) that is non-invasive.

This development could potentially revolutionize diabetes management for millions of people worldwide, offering a more convenient and less painful alternative to traditional methods.
