# Google Dominance in Web Browser Market Comes with Personal Data Collection

Google's dominance in the web browser market comes with a price: your personal data is highly sought after by various parties. Every time you browse the internet using Google Chrome, your online activities are collected and potentially sold to third-party vendors.

This shouldn't come as a surprise given that Google has a vested interest in collecting and profiting from user data. However, there are ways to protect yourself from this data-driven model. Securing your Google account is not just about relying on the browser's automatic updates, which now occur fortnightly.

One of the primary concerns with using Chrome for online privacy is that it may actually compromise your security. While the browser offers robust security features, its built-in privacy measures are inferior to those found in alternative browsers like Firefox. This is because Google's business model relies heavily on collecting user data, including app usage and browsing history.

To start improving your online security when using Chrome, navigate to the three-dot menu at the top right of the browser window. From there, scroll down to the Settings option and click on Privacy and Security. One of the first steps is to block third-party cookies by selecting the relevant option from the list. Additionally, enable the Do Not Track feature, which sends a request to websites to respect your online privacy.

When navigating the Google Chrome settings for online privacy, there are additional toggles that can be found elsewhere. By clicking on your Google profile icon and accessing Manage your Google Account > Data & privacy, you can toggle off Web & App Activity to prevent further data extraction by Google.

Another setting to consider disabling is Timeline, which tracks location history and collects data used for personalized search results and AI responses. Additionally, turning off Personalize Search will also help depersonalize ads and protect your data from Google's tracking methods.

To further reduce data collection and ad personalization, you can turn off personalized ads in My Ad Center. This setting is specifically designed to minimize the amount of data used for targeted advertising.

Regarding security, Chrome offers robust features such as Gemini Nano scam protection and a Safety Check review system. To access these tools, navigate back to the three-dot menu > Settings > Privacy and security.

By clicking on Go to Safety Check, you can initiate a scan that will identify any potential security issues and provide guidance on how to resolve them. This feature also continuously runs in the background, alerting you to emerging threats as they arise.

When navigating the Privacy and security settings in Google Chrome, it's essential to explore the Safe Browsing section. This feature offers three levels of protection, with Standard being the default mode that continuously scans for potentially hazardous websites, downloads, and extensions.

In this area, you can opt to upgrade to Enhanced protection, which leverages AI to detect emerging threats and enhance your online security while browsing. Alternatively, you can enable Always use secure connections, prompting Chrome to alert you if a site doesn't support secure connections, thereby safeguarding your data in transit.
