A fuel truck exploded in Mexico City’s Iztapalapa borough, injuring 57 folks on Wednesday, Mayor Clara Brugada stated at a press convention on the scene.
All the injured have been taken to hospitals, 19 of them in critical situation, stated Brugada, accompanied by the Secretaries of Citizen Security, Pablo Vázquez, and of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection, Myriam Urzúa.
Images shared on social media confirmed flames capturing excessive into the air as folks screamed and ran from the scene.
Another video confirmed massive plumes of smoke billowing from the truck as emergency staff tried to extinguish the fireplace.
According to authorities, the explosion occurred after the automobile carrying 49,500 liters of fuel – recognized in Mexico as “pipas” – overturned by a freeway in the Puente de la Concordia space.
Brugada stated the explosion generated a “shock wave” that affected 18 close by autos, and that the reason for the crash and the motive force’s situation are being investigated.
The hearth has been extinguished, Brugada stated, however cooling efforts have been persevering with.
