# French Police Detain Dozens Amid Nationwide Protests

Security measures have been heightened across France as protests continue over living costs, following last week's violent clashes.

Dozens of protesters have been detained by French police, while tear gas has been used to disperse some crowds in major cities across the country. The heightened security measures aim to prevent a repeat of last week's violent clashes that marred nationwide demonstrations.

The protests, which are centered on the issue of living costs, are expected to draw large numbers once again after over half a million people took part last weekend. Authorities have been bracing themselves for another massive turnout, with police forces on high alert in anticipation of potential unrest.

France's Interior Minister has confirmed that 135 arrests have been made so far, with a range of items seized from protesters including metal balls, lead pellets and fireworks. The minister also revealed that security personnel will be deployed in large numbers, with up to 70,000 officers being mobilized nationwide.

Protesters attempted to block a road near Lyon's city center despite demonstrations being banned in the area. However, their efforts were short-lived as police swiftly deployed tear gas to disperse the group of around 150 individuals.

The scene was further intensified by the presence of a police helicopter hovering above the city, while security forces patrolled the streets in armored vehicles and riot police vans. This display of force came amidst a backdrop of ongoing protests across France.

In Orleans, thousands gathered for a march against Marine Le Pen's National Rally party congress, where she is launching her presidential campaign to succeed Emmanuel Macron. The crowd's chants echoed through the city, with protesters calling for both Macron's resignation and Le Pen's imprisonment.

Approximately 11,000 police officers have been deployed across the city to contain the protests, while organizers claim that around 26,000 people have taken part in the demonstration.

The protest is one of several nationwide, organized by over 50 organizations, including labor unions and left-wing parties, who are calling for action against Le Pen's nationalist party. The gathering is expected to continue into Saturday, with many venues and institutions affected.

Major cultural institutions such as the Louvre and Orsay Museum have been closed on Saturday, while other sites associated with the upcoming NFL game between the New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers are also being shut down.

Despite ongoing protests in France, an NFL pop-up shop remains open in Saint-Denis, north of Paris, according to the league's statement.

Parisian shopkeepers have been taking precautions by barricading their stores all week, anticipating potential unrest, while some 3,000 shops across the country were damaged or looted last weekend. Protest marches are scheduled in key cities such as Paris and Marseille.
