# Fragile Truce Allows Humanitarian Mission to Enter Devastated Ukrainian City

A fragile truce has been brokered between Russia and Ukraine, allowing for a humanitarian mission to enter the devastated city of Oleshky in Ukraine's southern Kherson region. The rare ceasefire was facilitated by U.S. first lady Melania Trump, marking one of the most significant truces in the 4½-year war that began with Moscow's full-scale invasion.

A convoy comprising 25 buses, ambulances, and aid supplies has entered Oleshky to deliver essential goods such as food and medicine, as well as evacuate residents who wish to leave for either Russia or Ukraine. Approximately 2,000 people remain in the city, according to authorities and volunteers, and this operation aims to provide them with much-needed assistance.

The localized ceasefire in Kherson region has held for four days and is expected to continue until Sunday evening, allowing the humanitarian mission to proceed without interruption. This brief respite from the conflict offers a glimmer of hope in an otherwise grim war of attrition.

Russian and Ukrainian officials have been working together on this joint humanitarian effort, issuing identical statements assuring residents that they will be able to leave Oleshky safely if they choose to do so, while those who remain will receive necessary aid.

The United States played a key role in facilitating the humanitarian mission to Oleshky, with the White House attributing the success to first lady Melania Trump's diplomatic efforts.

Meanwhile, fighting continued in other parts of Ukraine, as Russia's Defense Ministry reported that its air defenses had downed over 1,000 Ukrainian drones overnight. Ukraine's air force countered by saying that Russia had launched ballistic and cruise missiles, along with scores of drones, into the country.

The aid convoy assembled at Armiansk, a town in Russian-occupied Ukraine approximately 85 kilometers south of Oleshky, according to Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's ombudsman and chief negotiator. Demining operations had been completed on designated routes into the city by late Thursday evening, although two people lost their lives during this process.

Lubinets met with residents in Oleshky earlier that day, as shown in a video posted by his office. He announced that evacuations would continue until 2 p.m. local time, with aid distribution set to begin 30 minutes later.

The brief truce between Russia and Ukraine has enabled aid distribution to begin in Oleshky, a village near the Dnipro River.

Local residents are being checked into empty houses, which some have been forced to vacate under pressure from Russian authorities. In some cases, residents are being encouraged to leave for Russia rather than Ukraine, according to Arkhipova, who has spoken with over 1,000 villagers expressing a desire to depart.

The Ukrainian delegation's presence in Oleshky is crucial as many residents fear interrogation or detention by Russian authorities if they stay behind. Arkhipova believes the delegation's involvement has helped alleviate some of these concerns and facilitated the evacuation process.

Aid distribution is currently underway, with hundreds of kilometers separating Oleshky from Ukrainian-held territory, which lies just a few kilometers across the Dnipro River.
