UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) has awarded the first round of RISE seed grants, made attainable by a grant from the National Science Foundation.

RISE — Research Innovations with Scientists and Engineers — is a group of ICDS computational scientists, information scientists and software program engineers that assist researchers leverage superior methods and abilities for his or her research projects. The grant supplies entry to the group to enhance and improve computationally intense projects.

The first spherical of seed grants will support 4 projects:

  • Eric Ford, professor of astronomy and astrophysics and ICDS co-hire, for the venture “Improving efficiency of pipeline to analyze Doppler exoplanet survey data.”
  • Helen Greatrex, assistant professor in distant sensing and geo-statistics and ICDS co-hire, for the venture “Standardizing satellite weather analysis.”
  • Abdullah Konak, professor of data sciences and expertise, Penn State Berks, for the venture “Predicting Wireless Signal Penetration using Deep Learning.”
  • Whitney Fosco, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral well being and assistant professor of neural and behavioral sciences, Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, for the venture “Automated Data Processing System for Neuroimaging.”

The members of ICDS’s RISE group support scientists in tackling data-driven and computationally intense investigations. In these grants, RISE group members will assist the research groups by creating databases and science gateways so group members can entry and handle their information effectively and successfully. The awarded projects supply an instance of how the RISE group will help allow computational research and discovery for researchers all through the University. Some of the opposite methods the members of RISE may give help embody providing efficient methods to construction code and selling finest practices to enhance efficiency of codes which are run on ICDS’s Roar supercomputer.

Researchers are welcome to submit projects for consideration anytime and will probably be accepted based mostly on a rolling deadline. For extra data, and to see the complete ability set of the RISE group, please go to the RISE Seed Grant webpage.
