# Formlabs Announces New 3D Printing Technology for Home Use

A new 3D printing technology has been announced by Formlabs, aiming to make resin printing safe for home use.

Unlike traditional filament-based printers, which have become popular due to their availability and lower cost, resin printers use light to create objects within a liquid medium. However, they have historically been confined to workshops and studios due to safety concerns. The resin used in these machines can be hazardous if it comes into contact with skin, and prolonged exposure to the fumes produced during printing can be unhealthy.

The user interface of most resin printers is often less intuitive than those designed for home use, likely due to their primary function being in industrial settings. This has limited the appeal of resin printing for casual crafters who may not have experience with complex machinery.

Formlabs aims to change this with its new Form Studio 1 printer, which promises a user-friendly interface suitable for home use. The machine is priced at $699, making it the company's most affordable model to date.

The Form Studio 1 marks a significant attempt by Formlabs to expand its market beyond industrial settings and into domestic spaces without sacrificing the quality that has made its printers stand out in their field.

The Form Studio's unique backlight system is comprised of 28 LEDs equipped with individual lenses, allowing for more precise placement of light during the printing process. This innovative approach diverges from the traditional LCD systems commonly found in budget-friendly resin printers.

A key feature of the Form Studio is its cartridge-based resin loading system. This enables the printer to accurately track the remaining resin levels within the tank and facilitates seamless cartridge switching when the resin supply runs low, ensuring uninterrupted print sessions.

Formlabs claims that the Form Studio achieves a respectable printing speed of 130mm per hour when utilizing its proprietary resin. This performance is likely to satisfy users seeking efficient and reliable results from their home-based printing endeavors.

The Alpha Resins developed by Formlabs have earned UL Greenguard Gold certification, underscoring their commitment to producing low-emission materials. Furthermore, these resins are characterized by minimal odor emission during the printing process, making them a safer choice for domestic use.

The Form 3 printer's design takes into account safe home use, as indicated by its combination with the VOC extractor accessory, priced at $180.

In addition to this safety feature, the printer comes with a range of accessories that cater to different needs and preferences. These include various parts such as build plates and resin tanks, which can be easily swapped out to accommodate multiple resins.

The flexible build plate and resin tanks allow for rapid switching between resins without having to pour them back into a bottle. This convenience is further enhanced by the option to upgrade to a flexible platform that makes removing prints from the plate easier.

Another valuable accessory is the combination wash and cure station, which provides a compact solution for cleaning and curing resin prints. This unit is surprisingly affordable at $200, considering its functionality and space-saving design.

The Founders Edition of Formlabs' Form Studio resin printer has gone on sale today, offering customers a range of options to customize their purchase. For a limited time, buyers can choose from four different colors for their printer, with the option to upgrade to a flexible build plate at an additional $750.

Accessories for the Form Studio are also now available, including resins that start at $29 per one-liter cartridge. This allows users to experiment with different printing materials and techniques. A thorough review of the printer's home-friendliness is planned in the near future.
