# Exit Polls Offer Early Indication of Voter Sentiment

Exit polls capture the views of voters as they leave their polling stations, providing an early indication of voter sentiment and motivations.

Exit polls offer a glimpse into voting behavior before election night tallies are finalized.

These surveys capture the views of voters as they leave their polling stations, providing an early indication of voter sentiment and motivations.

Unlike public opinion polls that predict voting intentions, exit polls gather data from actual voters on Election Day itself.

This includes voters who cast ballots early or by mail, with efforts made to reach them through phone calls, mail, and online interactions as well.

The companies involved in conducting the exit poll for this year's midterm election include SSRS, a survey and market research firm, working on behalf of several major news organizations.

These partner organizations receive the same data from the exit polls.

Voters who participate in the national exit poll are asked whether they voted for the Democratic or Republican House candidate in their district.

In addition to these basic voting questions, many states also ask which candidates voters supported in Senate and governor's races.

The demographic data collected from respondents is crucial, as it helps illustrate how different groups of people voted and what mattered to them when making their decisions.

This information is used to weight the exit poll, ensuring that it accurately reflects both the demographics of the electorate and the election results themselves.

Interviewers will be stationed at over 450 polling locations in 15 Senate battleground states this year to conduct exit polls. Each interviewer must adhere to local rules regarding their location outside the polling station. This ensures that the poll is conducted fairly and without influencing voters.

To capture a broad range of voters, the exit poll includes a pre-election survey. This survey allows voters who participate early, by mail, or on Election Day to be included in the results. The pre-election survey reaches respondents through various methods, including mailed invitations, telephone interviews, text messages, and online surveys.

Before Election Day, respondents can choose to complete the pre-election survey in either English or Spanish. Afterward, interviewers follow up with respondents to confirm that they voted and who they ultimately supported. This step helps to ensure the accuracy of the exit poll results.

On Election Day, interviewers count voters as they leave polling stations and randomly select individuals to participate in the exit poll. They offer questionnaires to every third person or every fifth person, for instance, from the time polls open until they close. Interviewers then phone in these results to a data center three times throughout the day.

Voters who participate in exit polls can choose to fill out questionnaires anonymously by depositing them in boxes, just like their actual ballots. This ensures that their answers remain confidential and secret. The same anonymity applies to those who participate through mail, phone, or online interviews - no personal information is collected about the voters.

Exit polls are conducted in a significant number of states this year. In addition to a national poll covering all 50 states, there will also be state-specific exit polls in 45 states where Senate and governor's contests have high stakes. These polls aim to capture the views of voters on various issues relevant to their specific state.

The national exit poll sample will consist of over 75,000 voters who participate through different channels - voting locations, online interviews, and phone calls. In 15 states with more significant elections, interviewers will be stationed outside at least 30 randomly selected voting locations to gather data from a larger number of participants. The remaining states will use phone, online, and mail surveys.

The sample size for each of the 15 states mentioned earlier will be approximately 4,000 voters. However, in Alaska, the sample size will be slightly smaller at about 3,000 voters, with an additional focus on early-voting locations before Election Day.

The NBC News Decision Desk will use a combination of exit poll data to help project race outcomes on election night, while also providing real-time insight into voter motivations and sentiments.

This year's exit polls will include between 500 and 3,000 voters in all states with Senate and governor's races, except for Alaska where the sample size will be slightly smaller at about 3,000 voters. The focus in Alaska will be on early-voting locations before Election Day.

The data collected through these exit polls is essential to understanding voter behavior and informing election-night coverage.
