# Ethiopia Informs UN of Self-Defense Measures Against Eritrea

The Ethiopian government has taken self-defense measures against neighboring Eritrea, citing a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Ethiopia has taken a bold step by informing the United Nations Security Council that it is taking self-defense measures against neighboring Eritrea.

The country's Foreign Minister, Gedion Timothewos, submitted a letter to the UN on Friday invoking Article 51 of the U.N. Charter, which allows for self-defense in the face of an armed attack. In his letter, he accused Eritrea of deploying troops across the border and occupying parts of northern Ethiopia.

This move has heightened concerns about a wider conflict unfolding in the region, particularly in Tigray, where government-allied forces report significant advances after a previous devastating war. The area is still reeling from the aftermath of that conflict.

The Ethiopian government claims Eritrea's actions are a clear violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity. In his letter, Foreign Minister Timothewos warned that Ethiopia would not tolerate such aggression, but he did not specify what measures the country was taking to address the situation.

Eritrea has responded by accusing Ethiopia of pursuing an aggressive agenda against it, particularly with regards to access to the Red Sea. The Eritrean Information Minister, Yemane Gebremeskel, made this claim on social media platform X without confirming or denying reports of troop crossings between the two countries.

Ethiopia's Foreign Ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue with neighboring countries despite escalating tensions between them.

The country's stance comes as Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed reiterated that Ethiopia must have access to the Red Sea, fueling speculation about potential military action.

Researchers at a Belgian university have estimated that the previous conflict in Tigray resulted in around 500,000 civilian deaths due to violence, famine, and the collapse of health services.

Government forces and their allies took control of Idaga Hamus on Friday and Abiy-Adi on Thursday, according to Ermiyas Ababu, a commander with the government-allied Tigray Peace Force.

Reports from residents in the area confirm that government-aligned forces have secured these towns, but it remains unclear who was in control before the reported advances.

Government forces have taken control of key towns in Tigray, a region in northern Ethiopia that was previously held by rebels. The federal police used loudspeakers to urge residents to participate in establishing a new administration in Mekelle, the regional capital, but government offices remained closed as of Friday morning.

The rebels had announced their withdrawal from Mekelle on October 3, allowing government-allied fighters to enter the city. However, the situation remains fluid, with reports suggesting that the control dynamics are still unclear. The Tigray Peace Force has imposed a curfew in the region, restricting movement for residents at night.

Telecommunications and mobile banking services have partially resumed in Mekelle and much of Tigray, according to the US Embassy. Electricity services also appear to be functioning again, although disruptions remain possible. This marks a significant development following weeks of conflict that undermined the 2022 peace agreement between the federal government and regional forces.

The escalation of violence has raised concerns about human rights abuses in the region, with previous reports documenting allegations of killings, rape, and looting by Eritrean soldiers during the last war. The situation remains unstable, with ongoing fighting threatening to destabilize the entire region.
