# Discord Changes User Privacy Policy for Large Servers

The platform's free instant messaging service will soon allow users to search for public servers online, but with some caveats.

Discord is making significant changes to user privacy, hot on the heels of a recent controversy over age verification. The platform's free and popular instant messaging service will soon allow users to search for public servers online, but with some caveats.

For servers with 1,000 or more members, known as Discoverable Servers, web search results will include links to these communities. However, this change does not affect the private nature of direct messages (DMs) and group chats between users.

To join a Discord server, typically an invitation link generated by an admin or member is required. These links usually expire within minutes, limiting access to private groups. But for very large Discoverable Servers, Discord has a built-in search function called Server Discovery that enables users to join communities without an invite link.

As part of the new policy, each large server will have its own web page discoverable in search engines like Google or DuckDuckGo. This page will provide a brief description of the server and a summary of conversations in public channels. New members can then directly join servers from their Server Web Pages.

Discord has outlined instructions for both server administrators and casual users on how to keep their server messages private, despite the increased visibility of large Discoverable Servers online.

Discord's new feature, Server Web Pages, is set to go live on November 16, 2026, but server administrators already have access to tools that allow them to opt out of certain channels from being included in these web pages.

Server admins can choose which channels are displayed on their community's Server Web Page, or they can opt out entirely and only show a server description. This is particularly useful for communities that want to keep certain information private, such as rules or sensitive topics.

Discord plans to introduce new features in mid-December 2026, including chat summaries and individual example messages. Regular users will have the option to opt out of having their part of conversations shown on Server Web Pages.

Users can also take advantage of other toggles that allow them to block personalized ads and data collection. This is a good opportunity for users to review and adjust their privacy settings, especially when it comes to sharing message text and data in Server Web Pages.

A new toggle will also be available to cover permissions across all Discoverable Servers that a user belongs to, eliminating the need to update preferences for each individual community.

Discord's move to make certain server information accessible through Google search results has sparked concerns about user privacy. However, it's worth noting that not all servers will be affected by this change. Only official Discoverable Servers that meet specific criteria - having at least 1,000 members, being at least eight weeks old, and meeting Discord's activity and safety standards - will have their web pages and message summaries indexed.

This development has led some to draw parallels between Discord and Reddit, with the former emerging as a potential alternative for communities seeking to share knowledge on niche topics. Discoverable Servers will function similarly to sub-Reddit communities, providing access to valuable information that might otherwise be restricted due to paywalls or private server limitations. This could prove beneficial for hobbyists and professionals alike.

The implications of this change are significant, with users advised to review their server settings to ensure they are not inadvertently sharing sensitive information. By taking proactive steps to manage their online presence, individuals can mitigate the potential risks associated with this update.
