# Canada's Maple Syrup Reserve Nearly Depleted Due to US Demand Surge

The Quebec Maple Syrup Producers estimate that their strategic reserve will be completely exhausted by February due to an unexpected surge in demand from American consumers.

Canada's maple syrup industry is facing a crisis after its strategic reserves were nearly depleted due to an unexpected surge in demand from American consumers.

The Quebec Maple Syrup Producers, responsible for managing the reserve, estimates that the stockpile will be completely exhausted by February, leaving the industry without a safety net. The reserve, which consists of three warehouses in Quebec capable of holding 218,000 barrels, has been the primary source of relief during periods of high demand or production disruptions.

Canada's maple syrup exports have seen significant growth over the past few years, with about 65% of its shipments heading to the United States. This trend is attributed to producers diversifying their markets and expanding beyond traditional American customers. However, a notable spike in demand occurred last year when President Donald Trump initiated his global trade war, prompting Americans to stockpile Canadian syrup supplies.

As a result, total maple syrup exports rose nearly 16% in the past year, following an initial 9% growth in 2024. Despite a slowdown in export growth during the first eight months of this year, production has actually declined by 5%, according to Canada's statistics agency. This disparity between exports and production may indicate that American consumers have been stockpiling syrup ahead of anticipated tariffs.

Canada remains the dominant force in global maple syrup production, accounting for more than three-quarters of all output by 2025. The majority of this production comes from Quebec, which supplies around nine-tenths of Canada's total maple syrup.

While favorable weather is crucial for a successful production season, officials are confident that the market will have sufficient syrup to meet demand in the coming year. However, this confidence does not extend to the long-term supply chain. According to Simon Doré-Ouellet, deputy general manager at the Quebec Maple Syrup Producers, the strategic reserve will need replenishing over the next few years.

A strong production season would be a welcome development for Canada's maple syrup industry. Over the past six years, Quebec has increased its production capacity by 50%, resulting in more than 21 million new taps where sap can be collected from maple trees. This expansion could provide a much-needed boost to the industry if weather conditions permit.

The depletion of strategic reserves is not unique to maple syrup or Canada. The ongoing conflict in Iran has led to a decline in global oil supplies, forcing countries to tap into their stockpiles. In the United States, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve has fallen to its lowest level since 1982.

Japan's rice reserve was depleted last year due to a combination of bad weather and looming natural disasters that triggered panic buying, leading to soaring prices.

However, this year has seen a dramatic shift in Japan's rice market, with the country now experiencing a record surplus.

China also maintains a strategic pork reserve, which was tapped into in 2019 following an outbreak of swine fever that drove up prices. The government released supplies from the reserve to stabilize the market.

As a result of its efforts to boost production and stimulate demand, China is now facing oversupply issues, with pork prices plummeting by 39% over the last four years, raising concerns about deflation across the broader economy.
