# Apple and Google Improve Spam Call Filtering on Mobile Devices

Mobile operating systems now handle spam calls more effectively without the need for third-party apps or paid subscriptions.

Spam calls have become a persistent problem for many people despite efforts to eradicate them.

A number of services have emerged in recent years that help identify and filter out spam callers, including Truecaller. However, thanks to advancements by Apple and Google, mobile operating systems can now handle spam calls more effectively on their own, eliminating the need for third-party apps or paid subscriptions.

In addition to built-in features, many cellular providers offer their own anti-spam protection services that may be enabled automatically or require manual activation through online accounts or carrier apps.

On an iPhone, users can access these filtering capabilities by navigating to Settings > Apps > Phone and enabling spam call filtering under the Call Filtering section. This will send identified junk calls directly to voicemail, which can be found in the Spam section of the Calls tab within the Phone app.

Enabling the Unknown Callers option in Settings helps keep call logs organized by categorizing recent calls from non-contacts under a dedicated section within the Phone app.

This feature can be accessed via the top-right button in the Phone app and allows for easy removal of unwanted numbers with the Mark as Known function. This way, you can declutter your call log and focus on important communications.

On the same Settings page, review the Screen Unknown Callers option where three settings are available: Never, Silence, and Ask Reason for Calling. The default setting is Never, which allows all incoming calls to ring normally.

The most aggressive approach, Silence, sends all unknown calls directly to voicemail, while the more moderate Ask Reason for Calling feature screens the caller and provides a live transcript of their response before deciding whether to answer or not.

To effectively block unwanted calls on your phone, it's essential to ensure that numbers from regular contacts are saved in your directory. This includes saving doctors' offices or work clients who frequently contact you, as these entries can be used to distinguish between legitimate and spam calls.

Many Android devices come equipped with built-in caller ID and spam detection features, although the availability of these tools may vary depending on the phone's model, Android version, and dialer app. The official Phone app by Google is a commonly pre-installed application that offers this functionality, but users can also opt for alternative dialers or download the Google Phone app as their default.

To access and configure the spam detection features in the Phone app, launch the application and tap the hamburger menu at the top-left corner. From there, navigate to Settings > Call Assist > Caller ID and spam, where you can enable See caller and spam ID to receive warnings about potential spam calls before answering them.

Enabling Filter spam calls will automatically silence suspected junk calls, providing an additional layer of protection against unwanted communications. By configuring these settings, users can significantly reduce the number of unsolicited calls they receive on their Android device.

Users can still access missed calls from unknown callers through the Phone app on their device.

To view these calls, as well as voicemails from unknown numbers, a specific set of requirements must be met: the phone must run Android 6.0 or later and have the latest version of the Google Phone app installed and set as default.

Certain Android devices, such as Samsung and Google phones, offer enhanced call screening features similar to iPhone's Ask Reason for Calling function.
