# Amazon Unveils New Series of Android-Based Tablets with Alexa Technology

The new tablets offer cloud-based syncing capabilities and onboard AI functionality, marking a significant shift away from Fire OS.

Amazon has unveiled a new series of tablets designed to provide users with both work and entertainment features on-the-go. These devices are built around Amazon's Alexa technology, which offers cloud-based syncing capabilities and onboard AI functionality.

The three new tablet models feature sleek aluminum chassis that will protect the devices' slim designs. Notably, this marks a significant shift away from Fire OS and the Amazon Appstore, as these tablets will instead run on Android 16 at launch and upgrade to Android 17 in early 2027.

This change means that users will have access to a wide range of apps through the Play Store, which has previously been limited for Amazon tablet owners. This expanded app selection is likely to be a major draw for those looking to use their tablets for productivity as well as entertainment.

One of the most compelling features of these new devices is the seamless syncing between them and other Amazon-enabled devices. Users can automatically pick up where they left off on movies, shows, books, or games across all their connected devices, thanks to a dynamic tab on the home screen.

A personalized "For You" layout also allows users to discover new content based on their current viewing habits, aggregating various forms of media into one convenient place.

The new Alexa Tablet offers a seamless reading experience for avid readers, combining their Audible and Kindle libraries in one convenient location. This feature allows users to access all their digital content without having to switch between different apps or services.

One notable aspect of the device is its display mode, which mimics the look and feel of paper. In both e-ink and color modes, the pages appear remarkably lifelike, giving a tactile experience that's reminiscent of reading on actual paper. The texture of the screen is convincingly papery, making it easy to get lost in a good book.

The Alexa Tablet also boasts impressive integration with Amazon's AI-powered assistant, Alexa Plus. This feature enables users to converse with the device and receive answers from Amazon's Silk browser without having to leave the app. By opting into on-screen intelligence, the generative model can analyze what's displayed on the screen and provide relevant information.

During a product demonstration, I observed that Alexa Plus took some time to respond to complex queries, but it was accurate in answering simpler requests, such as managing calendars or finding nearby restaurants based on dietary restrictions. The onboard model performed well in these situations, showcasing its capabilities.

Amazon's plans for the new Alexa Tablet lineup include phasing out production of the Fire Tablets entirely. According to Kevin Keith, vice president of Amazon's devices team, the company will continue to sell remaining stock over the next few months before discontinuing support for the older product. In a commitment to customer satisfaction, Amazon has pledged to provide at least four years of software updates and security patches for the new devices.

The new lineup of Alexa Tablets boasts distinct hardware and peripheral capabilities across its three models, catering to various user needs and preferences.

At the top end of the spectrum is Amazon's flagship tablet, which is designed to be an all-encompassing entertainment hub, e-reader, and personal AI assistant in one device. This versatile gadget can seamlessly transition into a work laptop with the addition of certain peripherals.

The premium configuration boasts 16GB of memory, making it well-suited for users who regularly utilize multiwindowing capabilities or more complex Play Store applications. This substantial storage capacity enables smooth performance even when handling demanding tasks.

The Alexa Tablet's hybrid design makes it an attractive option for those seeking a device that can effortlessly switch between entertainment and productivity modes. Its portability is comparable to that of a laptop, yet it still offers access to mobile apps, making it an ideal choice for users who value flexibility.

In contrast, the middle-of-the-road model is geared towards individuals who prioritize entertainment functionality but are willing to make some compromises in terms of storage capacity and other features. This device still retains key features like keyboard support and stylus compatibility.

The most budget-friendly option, with its 11-inch screen, is also capable of using a keyboard, albeit without the physical pogo pin connection found on higher-end models. This compromise results in reduced storage options, but users can still enjoy drawing and writing on-screen with the included stylus.

The Alexa Tablet 8 is designed to be a compact entertainment device, offering high-resolution visuals and seamless access to Amazon's media content.

While it may not be suitable as a portable workstation due to its limitations in terms of memory and storage space, this tablet can still provide an enjoyable experience for users who want to stay entertained on the go.

One potential use case for the Alexa Tablet 8 is as a pocket-sized e-reader, particularly with its enhanced Kindle mode that offers additional features beyond basic reading capabilities.

The design philosophy behind the new Alexa Tablets built specifically for children aims to strike a balance between providing adult-like hardware and maintaining safety features and parental controls.

The new Amazon Alexa Tablet range offers two screen sizes, an 8.7-inch model with a soft foam cover and an 11-inch variant with a more form-fitting case designed to withstand rough handling by younger children.

These devices come equipped with the Storybuilder tool that utilizes generative-AI, allowing kids to verbalize their stories and see accompanying visuals. Additionally, each tablet includes parental controls and a dashboard for monitoring weekly usage patterns. As part of the package, every Amazon Kids tablet comes with a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids Plus, providing access to content tailored for young users. The entire lineup is now available for preorder ahead of its scheduled US launch on October 14.
