# Alfozan Accused of Receiving Support from Saudi Government

Federal prosecutors have revealed that Abdulrahman Alfozan, a former OpenAI employee accused of planting a recording device, received substantial support from the Saudi government.

Prosecutors made this disclosure in a motion to keep Alfozan in custody pending trial, citing evidence that he had maintained close ties with an unnamed member of the Saudi Royal Family. This individual, who was contacted as recently as October 5, was one of several people with whom Alfozan frequently communicated on WhatsApp over the last two years.

A court filing showed that Alfozan responded to a message from this royal family member with "100", indicating his agreement to their proposal, which has raised concerns about his intentions and allegiances.

Prosecutors have shed more light on the alleged involvement of a former OpenAI employee accused of planting a recording device at the company's headquarters.

According to court documents, Alfozan was spotted near the conference room where high-level meetings were held, despite lacking authorization to be there. This discovery was made possible by OpenAI's security cameras, which captured multiple instances of his presence in the area. The prosecutors' findings suggest that Alfozan may have been trying to gather sensitive information from these meetings.

Prosecutors also revealed that around the time the device was installed, OpenAI executives met with government officials in the same conference room where the recording device was found. This raises questions about whether there was any prior knowledge or involvement of these government officials in the alleged plot. The exact nature and extent of their involvement remain unclear at this point.

Further investigation has uncovered more details about Alfozan's alleged efforts to plant the device, including modifications made to his phone as recently as September 13. Prosecutors found a note on his phone that listed tasks such as finding an apartment and a job for his wife in Riyadh, as well as obtaining an ID and Saudi passport for his son.

Prosecutors have revealed more details about the background of Alfozan, the former OpenAI employee accused of planting a recording device at the company's headquarters. It appears that he has strong family ties to Saudi Arabia, where both his parents and nearly all of his siblings reside.

Alfozan's attorney, William Pernik, argued in a separate filing that his client did not pose a flight risk. According to Pernik, Alfozan was aware of OpenAI's discovery of the device around eight to ten days before his arrest, which may have influenced his decision to leave. Furthermore, Pernik pointed out that 96 out of 138 airline bookings in Alfozan's email since January 2021 were one-way tickets, suggesting a pattern of travel rather than an intent to flee.
