# Alexa Upgraded with Generative AI Technology

A new version of Amazon's Alexa assistant, called Alexa+, has been introduced, leveraging generative AI technology from Anthropic and Amazon Nova.

Amazon has upgraded its popular Alexa assistant, introducing a more advanced version that leverages generative AI technology.

The revamped assistant, known as Alexa+, is now powered by large language models from Anthropic and Amazon's own AI suite, Amazon Nova. This new iteration of Alexa promises to be smarter and more conversational than its predecessors, capable of handling complex interactions and offering personalized experiences.

Amazon claims that Alexa+ can orchestrate across tens of thousands of services and devices, a feat the company says has never been achieved at this scale before. The upgrade is expected to make managing homes and acting as personal shopping assistants easier and more efficient.

The upgraded assistant is accessible through various channels, including all Alexa-enabled devices such as Echo and Fire TV. Amazon's new tablets also come with Alexa+ built-in, allowing users to interact with the AI-powered assistant directly on their device.

Users can download the Alexa app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store to access the upgraded assistant on their mobile phones or tablets. The chatbot is also available online at www.alexa.com, where it functions as a free text-based interface for quick answers and research.

Amazon has made its AI system more accessible to users by introducing Alexa+. This upgrade is now available at no extra cost to all Amazon Prime subscribers, who can simply ask their Alexa device to switch to the new system.

To provide a broader range of functionalities, Amazon has developed what it calls "experts, which are groups of systems and capabilities that specialize in specific tasks. These experts gather information to assist customers, as exemplified by Daniel Rausch's experience with his New York Yankees obsession when using Alexa+.

The AI system now offers four distinct personality styles for users to tailor their conversations: Brief, Chill, Sweet, and Sassy. This feature allows individuals to personalize the tone of their interactions with Alexa+, making it more accommodating to different preferences.

Amazon is aiming to transform Alexa into a multifunctional AI assistant by incorporating agentic functionalities. These new capabilities enable Alexa+ to navigate the internet, complete tasks, and operate in the background without user intervention.

Despite its promising features, Alexa+ has been marred by inconsistencies that have frustrated many early adopters. The chatbot's performance is often plagued by errors, requiring users to verify the accuracy of its responses before relying on them.

This is not an isolated issue, as AI systems are still grappling with consistency problems. However, these issues can be particularly annoying when interacting with a conversational AI like Alexa+. Some users have likened the experience to dealing with a chatty neighbor who won't take the hint and leave you alone.

In addition to its conversational shortcomings, Alexa+ has also been criticized for its functional memory and lag times. Some users have reported issues with the chatbot's ability to remember tasks and follow through on them. Others have experienced delays in response times or difficulty hearing the AI's output clearly.

These technical issues are not unique to Alexa+, as many AI products currently face similar growing pains. Despite this, the chatbot can still perform adequately for household tasks, such as controlling smart home devices and providing information on demand.

To access Alexa+ with all its features, users need an Amazon Prime subscription or one of the select Alexa-compatible devices announced in August 2026. Those without these options can still try out the chatbot's limited free version via the website or app.

Amazon's AI assistant Alexa has been upgraded to offer premium features through its new service called Alexa+, but access is currently limited to specific regions.

The United States and Canada are the only countries where full access to Alexa+ is available, while early access programs have been rolled out in several other nations including Mexico, the UK, Brazil, Italy, Germany, Austria, France, Australia, Spain, and India. However, users should note that the capabilities of their Alexa+ may vary depending on their location due to regional differences.

In contrast, those who don't want to subscribe to Amazon Prime can opt for a separate $19.99 per month subscription plan to access Alexa+, although this is more expensive than the standard Prime membership, which costs $14.99 per month or $139 annually.

The full benefits of an Amazon Prime subscription are included with the standard membership, such as free deliveries, Amazon Prime Video, Amazon Music, and several Kindle perks, making it a more cost-effective option for users who want to access Alexa+ without committing to the separate plan.

To activate Alexa+, users can either update their devices by saying Alexa, upgrade to Alexa plus" or log in to their Amazon account at www.alexa.com; eligible customers may also be able to try out the service with a 30-day trial.
