# AirTags' Battery Life Falls Short of Expectations

Users have reported that their AirTags run out of power much faster than expected, despite Apple's claims of over a year battery life.

The battery life of Apple's AirTags has become a concern for many users, who may find that their trackers run out of power much faster than expected.

Apple claims that its AirTags have a battery life of over a year, but in reality, the actual lifespan varies greatly depending on usage patterns. This discrepancy is likely due to factors such as frequent checking and updating of location information or constant Bluetooth connectivity.

Despite being part of the second-generation AirTag model, which was released earlier this year, the battery performance remains unchanged. However, some simple habits can help extend the life of an AirTag's battery, making it last longer than expected.

The standard coin-cell battery used in all AirTags is a CR2032 type, which is also commonly found in car key fobs and watches. These batteries are widely available on online marketplaces like Amazon, as well as at local drugstores and supermarkets, making replacement easy and convenient.

A single CR2032 coin cell battery typically costs less than $1, making it an affordable option for replacing the AirTag's battery when needed.

Replacing the AirTag's battery involves removing the steel underside cover by pressing and twisting it until it comes loose. This allows access to the old battery, which can be removed and replaced with a new one. The new battery should have its positive side facing up before being inserted into the AirTag.

Apple estimates that an AirTag's battery typically lasts for over a year in most cases, but this can vary depending on usage patterns. If the device is frequently used to track items or locate them remotely, the battery may drain faster and need replacement sooner.

To check the battery level of your AirTags, open the Find My app on your Apple device and switch to the Items tab. If you see an orange battery icon next to an AirTag, it's likely time to replace the coin cell battery. This visual cue provides a clear indication that the battery is running low.

The absence of a battery indicator in newer versions of Find My has been attributed to inaccuracies in previous implementations. Apple removed this feature to provide a more reliable and trustworthy experience for users tracking their devices and items with AirTags.

To maximize the battery life of your Apple AirTags, it's essential to be mindful of how you use them, especially when the battery is running low.

When an AirTag's power levels start to dwindle, some features are automatically restricted to conserve energy. For instance, precision finding and sound alerts are temporarily disabled to prevent unnecessary battery drain.

The constant exchange of location data between your AirTag and nearby Apple devices can also impact battery life. This process occurs continuously, even when you're not actively using the tag's features.

Certain actions, however, tend to deplete the battery more quickly than others. One such example is repeatedly triggering the sound alert on your AirTag, as this requires the speaker to activate frequently and consumes additional power.

Another feature that can drain the battery faster is precision finding, which relies on the Ultra Wideband chip to communicate with your iPhone or Apple Watch in real time. Similarly, constantly checking on a tag's location through Find My can also reduce its lifespan.

If you find yourself unable to replace a low-battery AirTag during a trip, try to limit unnecessary tracking and locating until absolutely necessary to prevent further battery drain.

Using a reliable battery can significantly extend the life of an Apple AirTag. While generic CR2032 batteries may be available at a lower cost, they tend to hold less charge than those from well-known brands. As a result, it's recommended to choose a battery from a reputable manufacturer.

When selecting a replacement battery, note that some bitterant-coated CR2032 batteries may not be compatible with the AirTag. Additionally, extreme temperatures can affect the battery life of an AirTag, so avoid placing it in extremely cold or hot environments. Apple specifies that the device operates optimally within a temperature range of −4°F to 140°F (−20°C to 60°C).

An AirTag's constant movement also contributes to faster battery drain, as it continuously transmits its location. This is normal behavior, especially if one AirTag is placed in a car and another on a keychain.
